"I use photography to create fictional landscapes and situations in my studio. Over the course of several weeks, I sketch and build these scenes until I achieve the desired composition for one single image. My work explores perception and the construction of meaning in the visual world. I am particularly fascinated by the contrast between the roles we play in life and the underlying reality that exists beneath the surface." Amanda plays with the spatial properties of the painting through formal decisions of division, colour and light. She is interested in achieving optical illusion through the placement of flat geometric architectural shapes, fused with more organic forms and structures: underwater plants, internal cell like structures, costume, fabrics, decorative patterns, the tropical and exotic. 'Creating an imaginary space is crucial to my work and my process of working plays into it. I build a series of layers, or screens, each one in dialogue with the next, concealing and then revealing what's underneath. The process is playful and exploratory, and there is a sense of depth contrasting with the flat surface quality.' Urban Arts Space Intern and Artist Feature: Madeline Vogelmeier @madelinevog See her work in the Senior Projects Exhibition through May 4, now on view at our downtown gallery! *How would you describe your work and its impact on you as an artist?* This work really began for me as an exploration of memory—how it changes or is lost over time, and how it appears to me in my mind. The paintings were a way for me to translate what I was encountering in my own mind into physical space. But as the work kept developing, I found that it sort of took on a new presence for me. In the build-up of paint layers and textures, these paintings became more about the physical qualities that paint can hold and the decisions I was making throughout the process of creating them. Though they still feel very much connected to my concept of memory, I think this work really showed me how ideas can become completely transformed without necessarily realizing it. I feel like I look at my painting practice much more carefully now and allow myself to consider certain aspects of my work that previously went unnoticed. *Who/what have been your sources of inspiration in your work?* With these paintings in particular, I looked a lot towards abstract expressionism, specifically Joan Michell’s work. This period really focused on the materiality of paint being the primary focus of the painting itself, rather than simply a means of depicting an image, and this idea was central when creating my work. The tactile and substantial qualities that paint can take on in order to bring it to the viewer’s attention were very influential for me, and I felt like I wanted to achieve this in the textured surfaces of the paintings. Xuan Cui || “I enjoy seeing the interactions of various colors, and I get inspired by the organic forms and all the twists and turns in the images.” Xuan Cui, a fashion design BFA who graduated from Parsons School of Design in the year 2023, has grown up with a multicultural background, being a member of a Chinese minority group, and has been fortunate to study both arts and science in different cities and abroad, including Beijing; Yanji, China; Seoul; London and New York. She gained open-mindedness and appreciation for different thoughts and styles through her rich experiences and figured out her design philosophy, guiding her toward creating designs that could give out a unique sense of playfulness. Color is her greatest passion in design, which is evident in her work through a consistent showcase of a curated palette brimming with vibrant energy. She has an intuitive design approach and places great emphasis on making creative forms, considering the contrast of positive/negative shapes. #InTheStudio with 2023 Joan Mitchell Fellow Nicholas Galanin: “Some of my projects are small in scale, and are worn on the body. Some are grand in scale, and take time. Some are site-specific, where I work with the history of a place and the community local to that space. “There are constraints that we have to work around as artists, always—whether it’s budget, time, location, resources, whatever. I’m always navigating those realities. I like to remain open, and consider all possibilities along the way. “For a recent project at Davidson College in North Carolina, I excavated the shadow of Andrew Jackson, who is a highly problematic figure in American history, connected to oppressive colonial actions towards indigenous people and enslaved Black Americans. I broke the soil in the shape of a monument to Andrew Jackson, and then cultivated and grew Catawba corn in that soil. “Catawba is a local indigenous community there in North Carolina, and the corn is a medicinal sustenance that had great importance to the community’s being and survival. That seed was thought to have been extinct, but years back, somebody found the strain of that corn. Since then, the community has been trying to grow a seed bank for it. “We planted the corn over the course of the season, and it sprouted into stalks. The title of the piece is ‘Unshadowed Land,’ with the concept that the corn would be able to survive and grow under the shadow of colonial violence and history. For an indigenous community to be able to thrive safely or not is a reflection of our times in certain ways. Then we worked with the agriculture department at the college to harvest a larger field of catawba corn. At the end of the project, the corn was all harvested by the Catawba community and it was shared as a feast. In 2021, contemporary artist Marta Djourina won the @baza_award / @___yvaa___ with her “Touchpoint” series. Again experimental photographs, the works in the series show the moment when a human finger touches the photographic paper and is forever imprinted on it. As part of her award, she went on a two-month residency in New York last year. Her exhibition “Flashbacks”, which you can currently see at @ica.sofia curated by @marinaxslavova is a result of this residency. On April 12, another exhibition opens in which you can see Marta Djourina’s photographic experiments - the collective “HOMO DEUS” at the @goetheinstitut_bulgarien with curator @boris_kostadinov The project is conceptual, and its motto is Yuval Harari’s words “Our newfound abilities may soon force us to redefine what it means to be human.” from his book of the same name “Homo Deus - A Brief History of Tomorrow”. German artists Pia vom Ende and Denis Rudolph also take part in the exhibition. In “What’s Happening” we invited Marta Djourina to talk about her experiments with light, photography beyond the material and photography as an invisible performance.
