'Atom Heart Mother No.2' - Dutch Cow - Meadows - South Australia - SA - May 2024. It was on the way home, as I was driving from the Meadows to Adelaide, that I saw on the side of the road, near the other side of the fence, Dutch cows, serenely grazing. One of them grazed serenely with her calves nearby and did not avoid my presence. When I saw it, I immediately remembered the cover of Pink Floyd's 1971 album, created by Hipgnosis. I remembered that at the time (in 1971) Pink Floyd had asked Hipgnosis that they wanted something completely dull and non-psychedelic for the cover of their album, unlike the previous album they had made (A Saucerful of secrets). The reference and coincidence of finding this cow serenely grazing led me to take this photograph. Strangely, the photo gained discreetly psychedelic colours without me having control or making any changes to its processing and I kinda like it. IThere is nothing dramatic or exceptional about it, after all it is only a picture of a cow but it conveys so much. This is a discreet tribute to one of the best albums I've ever heard in my life and from one of the best art-music groups of all time. My love for Dutch art was born in London, the rare case of a city where Quality is even more abundant than Quantity when it comes to this topic. Only years after I’ve made my first trip to the Netherlands and visited some local museums (there are so many!)…but it was in places such as the Wallace Collection and the Queen’s Gallery that I got my first infatuations. Back in 2010 I was lucky enough to visit an exhibition in the Queen’s Gallery on Dutch Landscapes and in that Doric temple I discovered the existence of the Gothic Rijnsburg Abbey. Rijnsburg Abbey was a glorious victim of the Eighty Years’ War aka Dutch Revolt fought between the ruling Catholic Spain and the new Protestant Dutch Republic. 1574 was a fateful year for that area and the history of the new country: it’s the year of the heroic siege of nearby Leiden that lasted from October 1573 till the 3 October 1574. The Spanish army had to abandon the siege of the city only after all the dykes had been destroyed and the lands surrounding it had been flooded. During these terrible months the abbey was abandoned and then caught fire: it was never rebuilt, but became a symbol of the war. The combination of these ruins and the prized Dutch cows in the 1640s are a placid match of winning patriotic symbols: the peace of Westphalia was signed only in 1648, but by then the war had been already won and negotiations had started in 1641. So there’s much more than a romantic landscape a few cows in these canvases: it’s politics!
