Good old favorite. A woman’s face. Met regelmaat krijg ik nog foto’s toegestuurd van mensen die een werk van mij hebben gekocht ergens in de winkel. Het is in dit geval een werk wat in samenwerking met @urbancotton.nl is geproduceerd en wordt verkocht door heel Nederland, Duitsland en België. En altijd is het weer leuk om te zien dat mensen enthousiast zijn en de moeite nemen om dat te laten zien. These were possibly of his own family, though his works of well-to-do women breastfeeding and caring for children could also indicate that he had attended his mother on her rounds as a midwife. His work showed astute observation of the mundane details of everyday life while also functioning as well-ordered morality tales. Vincent Van Gogh, The Cypress and Flowering Tree, 1889, Oil on canvas, 60 x 80 cm, Kunsthaus Zürich. During his stay at the Hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy from May 1889 until May 1890 Vincent continued to paint and draw. While the garden was his main topic in the first few months, Vincent later was allowed to explore the countryside by himself to paint a number of his favorite subjects such as fruit orchards, olive trees, cypresses and golden wheat fields that allowed him to experiment with bold color contrasts and highly expressive brushwork. What all these series have in common is that the subjects demonstrate his love for nature and the seasons. This painting combines two of his favorite subjects: cypress trees and wheatfields. Vincent was fascinated with the tall trees that are so typical of the Provence region. He made at least thirteen paintings that feature them prominently and compared their form to Egyptian obelisks. Wheat fields and haystacks resonated on a personal level for him. Farmers sowing and reaping was a subject that Vincent explored from the beginning until the very end of his artistic career. It demonstrates his love for rural areas and the people who live there. This work was probably painted in June 1889, just shortly after his arrival in Saint-Rémy. Vincent made several version of the work of which this one in Kunsthaus Zürich and the one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York are considered to be a studies. What a sad face! Continuing with the canine theme here we have an Antique 1909 original etching by sought after artist Henri Benedictus van Raalte (1881-1929). Published in London by Messrs. H Drake, Baltic House, 27 Leadenhall Street, E.C. Titled ‘Rodney Stone’ this is one of a series of etchings he did of bulldogs, the others being titled ‘Rival Stone, Dick Stone, Flag Stone and British Stone’. The #collection comes from the collector and artist #RobAussen, who passed away last January. The collection consisted of thousands of objects. ranging from statues, masks and utensils, mainly from the Congo. Recently I went to see Gideon again for the last time. I found this painting among the remains, mainly the rubbish. An oil painting on board, without a frame, dirty under thick layers of dust. I have now restored it and provided it with a suitable frame. I must say that I am very happy with this work, especially considering the story behind it.
