25 APRIL 1945 – AMERICAN AND SOVIET TROOPS MEET AT THE ELBE With the war against Germany winding down, U.S. forces raced to the Elbe River, which was to be the meeting point between the American and Soviet armies. The first contact with America’s ally to the east occurred on 25 April. The meeting was the cause of much celebration, as it symbolized that the Third Reich had been split in two, and the total defeat of Germany was imminent. As the Soviets neared the Elbe-Mulde line, American units buzzed with excitement, sending out patrols to make first contact with the approaching Red Army. These efforts finally met with success at 1130 on 25 April, when a small patrol from the 69th Infantry Division, V Corps, First Army, encountered a lone Soviet horseman in the village of Leckwitz. Other 69th Infantry Division elements had similar encounters later that day, and on 26 April division commander Major General Emil F. Hamburg'un Frankfurt'tan daha yağmurlu, daha soğuk, daha gri olmasının bizim için önemi yok. Birçok insanın aksine bu gibi koşullar, bizi etkileyen koşullar değil. Hamburg'u yağmura ve soğuğa rağmen keşfettik. İstanbul'dan, Fransa'dan, İtalya'dan ve Hollanda'dan izler taşıyan bu güzel şehri size de kısaca anlatmak isterim. Hamburg ismi, "Hammaburg" tan gelmektedir. Hamma kelimesi, bataklık anlamına gelen "hamme"den gelmektedir. "Burg" ise kale demektir. İmparator Şarlman, zamanında Alster ve Elbe Nehirleri arasında kalan bu bataklıktaki kayalık bir bölgeye kale yaptırdığı için şehrin ismi Hamburg'tur. Hamburg, Almanya'nın kuzeyinden bulunur ve Almanya'nın ikinci büyük şehri olmasının yanı sıra başlı başına da bir eyalettir. Kuzey Denizi'ne akan Elbe Nehri'nin kıyısında yer alır. Bu nehir haricinde Alster, Bille, Eilbek, İsebek, Este, Flottbek, Düpenau, Kollau, Osterbek ve Wandse nehirleri de geçmektedir. Ayrıca Hamburg şehrinin içinde "Binnenalster" ve "Außenalster" isimli iki büyük göl bulunmaktadır. Dolayısıyla Hamburg'ta İtalya'daki Venedik'ten ve Hollanda'daki Amsterdam şehrinden daha fazla köprü bulunmaktadır. Bu sebeple Hamburg, çok güzel manzaralar sunuyor. Yağmur altında ayrı güzel, güneşli havada ayrı güzel, geceleri ışıklar altında ayrı güzel. Gittiğimiz her yerde olduğu gibi Hamburg'un her bir köşesinde de çok tatlı, yüzleri gülen, nazik, kibar Almanlar'a denk geldik. Şu bir gerçek ki; her insan nezaketi sever. Siz, nasıl davranırsanız o şekilde de karşılık görürsünüz. Hamburg'ta görülecek çok sayıda tarihî yer, çok güzel müzeler, çok sayıda ve her lezzetten alternatifler sunan çok sayıda kafe ve restoranlar var. (The difference of roughly 3 kilometers is due different kilometrage in the border area between the two countries.) 💧The drainage area of the Elbe is very large and consists of the rivers Moldau (Vtlava), Mulde, Saale, Havel/Spree, and Elde/Müritz. 🥸 Fun Fact: When it is very cold, drift ice can form on the river. Because of the current and flow velocity, the ice floes rub against each other and take on a round, circular form. These ice floes are called “Böhmische Kuchen” (Bohemian Cake).
