How many games of Hide and Seek have you played with your kids? I was just at an 11 year old's birthday party today and the kids were STILL playing hide and seek. But would you think it makes for cute photos? Maybe not, but I challenge that it does! Why? -It documents a game your family already plays together -It gives the kids and family a way to forget they are doing family photos and actually connect -It brings genuine smiles to the kiddos -It stretches you as a photographer. Tip: Tell the parents to looks extra surprised when their kids finds them! Set boundaries with the kids that you will only do 3 rounds, otherwise you might play hide and see the entire rest of the session. And yes, this game really works for all ages and is great if there is a big age gap between siblings. I did hide and seek with a family with a 18, 15 and 5 year old two weeks ago. Encourage play! Do you remember your dreams when you wake up in the morning? I didn't always. I went through a long period where I swore I wasn't dreaming at all. It was during some of the darkest moments in my life, which made not dreaming feel like a punishment. When I reclaimed my life, I reclaimed dreaming, and I am so grateful for that. (Now, I remember my dreams almost every day. I am thinking about keeping a dream journal, but four journals at once might be too many...) I have been having the most vivid dreams lately. They aren't scary, and most of them are a weird mix of the things I have been thinking about a lot, but last night's dream felt so real. I dreamt about spring flowers. And not just any spring flower, but the sweat peas that bloom wild in Discovery Park during the late spring. I don't even know why they were on my mind. I haven't really been thinking about them much, but there they were; big, and full, and pink, and they stretched feet into the air. I dreamt that I saw them as the plane I was on landed. I don't even have travel plans until the end of June, but I dreamt I was arriving home and on the tarmac, there they were, the most beautiful stalk of bright pink sweet peas I've ever seen. Flowers on a tarmac, what does that even mean? I recently got back from a trip home to Goa. Most of you already know that I’m from India. While I was there, I spent time in the garden, went to the beach, went to the market, did errands - mostly things I do here in Everett already. It made a huge difference doing them in warmer weather. My mood was better but I also got tired faster. It’s very normal for us to rest or take an afternoon siesta after lunch. So that’s what I did. I say all this because we had a first day of warm weather here in a long time. I think if i hadn’t gone to India, I would’ve been much more excited. But it was a fairly normal day for me. When someone points a camera at me, my first reaction used to be to make a funny face. My body would tense up and the only release was humour. I kind of understand how that all feels now so I’m able to give a smile. It’s also a big reason why I ask families to look at each other. Not to say they don’t have beautiful smiles but if they happen to be camera shy, that split second where they’re not looking at me, gets me some sweet smiles when they finally turn back to camera. This is not some scientific method so I have no way of proving it. Accommodations. What does that mean to you? I honestly think of hotel accommodations first. But in my day to day life, I have to acknowledge the accommodations I make for my kids. While I love to go, go, go on vacations and explore as much as possible, that is not what my neurodivergent daughter needs. She needs a schedule and time to transition. Time to breathe and reset. We accommodate her by building these things into our lives. I do what I can to accommodate children and families at my photo sessions too. Do they need a quieter location? Would the photo session be better at your home so that your kiddo feels comfortable? As parents, we can build up our dreams for what we want. Perhaps you dream of beautiful photos in a flower field. In beautiful matching dresses and the sun setting behind you. Oh - that would be stunning! Reality though is this... not every child performs well and is happy near the end of the day. Those dresses may be itchy. And that field of flowers? BORING! (to the child...). So think about what will be the best situation for your kiddo. It is hard setting our dreams aside. I ran into that this weekend on our weekend getaway... but ultimately, we must balance the needs of our family and accommodate our special kids. It does not mean we are giving in. We are honoring them. Please remind yourself of that. I read and shared an incredible post in my stories on Return of Investment (or ROI) the other day. We are such creatures of habit and in need of instant gratification that we often don't see the value of something until life shows us how important that time, place, object, or person was. And time is often a cruel thief, so by the time we realize how important that moment, person, or object was, it's often too late. The moment is gone, the object is lost, the person has left, and what remains is our memories of that moment. But memories fade over time, and we can't quite hold onto them the way we want to. It is in those moments that we realize how truly important photographs are. When we initially look at the price tag of a portrait photographer, we scoff or become filled with dread. Is a photography session really worth $200, $500, $1000, $2000? I mean, we're living the moment, so why do we need to capture it? And the answer is simple. In times of joy, we look back at a photograph and it immediately fills up our senses with the smells and sounds of that incredible period in time. In times of sorrow, we can look back at that life well lived and remember our loved ones the way that they would like us to remember them. Photographs exhilarate our senses, touch our hearts, fill us with desire, heal, connect, and ignite us. The ROI on portrait photography isn't always immediate, but it is immeasurable. I've lost a lot of people that I care about in the last few years. As we get older, and as our babies grow into teenagers and adults, the ROI becomes so obvious. What would you pay to return to that moment and hold time in a bottle? That's what a photograph does. It perfectly captures a memory exactly as it was. I was trying to find an original file from five years ago so that I could update the size, when I came across this gem of my littles when they were small. I need to get back to Mt. Rainier this year with my kids who are twice this size now. I am also glad that I learned how to organize files better as my business has matured, because goodness I was terrible at it in the beginning. Having in-home newborn photos soon? This is for you.... On the day of the photoshoot, prioritize getting ready over a spotless house. With a newborn (and possibly other children), your energy is best spent on preparing yourselves rather than achieving a flawless home setting. This is our sweet little boy, Humboldt. We call him "Bolt" for short. He's a darling baby with a wonderful disposition, and I am so in love with him. He's developed some sort of skin irritation since he's been with us, and we don't know what is causing it. He has a vet appointment tomorrow, but since getting him, I have been up taking care of and soothing him, much like I would a newborn baby. My feelings of protection towards him are strong and remind me a lot of the early days with my own babies, sleeping so lightly and answering any whimper or cry. I am hoping that the vet can tell us what is causing him so much discomfort and that it's an easy fix. I never knew I could love a puppy this much. I just want to make him feel better. He's found his favorite chair, and has made himself at home on it, not allowing anyone else to sit down unless they're up for kisses and snuggles. I love this little boy.
