On this day APRIL 19, 1989, my friend @santanaraymond and 4 other innocent black teens were WRONGFULLY convicted of a rape crime that they did not commit in Central Park, NYC. They all seperately served anywhere from 6 to 13 years behind bars. After DNA testing and a full admittance, Matias Reyes confessed to the rape in 2001. In 2002, the confession resulted in all 5 being EXONERATED‼️35 years later, we remember ✨️THE EXONERATED FIVE✨️ _______________________________________________________ #exonerated5 #centralpark5 #raymondsantana #yusefsalaam #kevinrichardson #koreywise #antronmccray #whentheyseeus #tammydior

Prison is where “criminals” are sent to “rehabilitate” and become better citizens, right? Not so much. 87% of Black men in the system – like Raymond Santana – end up getting locked right back up! Here’s why. #PushBlack #BlackHistory #CentralPark5 #Recidivism #RaymondSantana #Exonerated5 All sources for this story can be found at the link in our bio. –––– 📌We all know schools aren’t teaching Black history correctly. On this day in 1989, the so-called Central Park Five (the Exonerated Five now) were arrested. I was 13, very close in age to Raymond Santana and Kevin Richardson who were 14. Anton McCray and Yusef Salaam were both 15, and Korey Wise was 16. They were wrongfully convicted of the rape of the Central Park jogger. Santana served 6 years, McCray 7, Salaam and Richardson 8, and Wise 13. Since we're all close in age and because I followed the case closely from the beginning, I often thought about them over the years. I thought about all the living I did from 14-20 or 14-22 or 15-22 or 15-23 or 16-29. Cars and jobs and loves and moves and trips and dreams and heartbreaks. So much living. #exonerated5 #centralpark5 #wrongfulconviction #innocenceproject

Exactly 35 years ago today: a horrible night for a woman in Central Park and for five boys whom the New York news media labeled “The Central Park Five”. Innocent, they served years in prison then became The Exonerated Five. Today: the trash behind this May 1, 1989 ad is ON TRIAL! #centralpark #nyc #exonerated5 #racism

“Dead to the world/but somewhere in our souls/we are both scratching at the walls/yelling to the sky/punching the air/to let everyone and everything know/that we are in here/still alive.” . Even before Amal Shahid got into a fistfight that ended with a white boy in a coma, he was marked. Labels have followed him all throughout his school years. Disruptive. Defiant. Class skipper. Those labels follow him into the courtroom and into his cell in a juvenile detention center. In prison, the only thing Amal has is words and art. Is that enough to survive? . I will defer to a refrain you’ve heard from me: I ain’t never ever read a bad novel in verse. Although admittedly, this one took me longer to get into than Long Way Down or The Poet X. If you didn’t catch it, this book’s coauthor is DOCTOR Yusef Salaam, one of the Central Park Five. That front row seat viewpoint of being wrongfully convicted is key. Punching the Air won the 2020 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature. I gave Punching the Air 4/5 ⭐️s on Goodreads and 4.25/5 ⭐️s on StoryGraph. . 2024 52 week reading challenge complete. Challenge number 48: a banned book. ✅ This book is being challenged in the currently-not-so-great state of Florida, because of course it is. The student panelist asked me some deeply thoughtful questions as to my experience of 25 years of wrongful incarceration, 10 consecutive years of which I was erroneously held in solitary confinement. 🤬🤬🤬 Overall the discussion brought some very enlightening perspectives about hope, privilege, gratitude, and the moral cause of the mass incarceration problem in the U.$. 🥷🥷💪🏽💪🏽💯💯⚔️⚔️🫡🫡✊🏾✊🏾 For COMMON UNITY TOUR BOOKING DM me a-sap before my calendar is filled up. 💯💯💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽⚖️ #depauw #depauwuniversity #panel #realtalk #solitary #solitaryconfinement #exoneree #exonerated5 #truthneverdies #comonunity #commonunity #leonbenson #freedom #juctice #rage

Posted @withregram • @keithboykin Some of y’all seem to have forgotten who Donald Trump is. Today I’m here to remind you that this man has a 50-year history of racism. And while he smiles in your face, next week I’ll explain how the people he appointed are quietly dismantling civil rights, voting rights, affirmative action, a Black women’s venture capital fund, debt relief for Black farmers, the Minority Business Development Agency, DEI, critical race theory, police reform, and anything that might help Black people. It’s time to wake up! Donald Trump is not a friend to Black America. Anyone who knows me or has heard me deliver any workshop to youth on the law knows how often I speak about the Exonerated 5 (formerly the Central Park 5). My passion for sharing their story is rooted in my desire to change lives and empower and educate youth. So when I had the honor and privilege of hanging out with Korey Wise I felt truly fortunate. If you think meeting him was the only goal you are wrong. We have work to do together. Stay tuned!

@real_sharpton was broadcasting live on MSNBC. During the stream many topics were discussed but the social injustices we continue to face today was the highlight. Speaking on the topic he mentions the #Exonerated5 and our “Brotherhood” pieces. Quick backstory: “Five teens from Harlem—four black and one Latino— were coerced into confessing to the crimes following 30 hours of interrogations. To be exonerated after serving between 5 and 13 years behind bars.” We want to say thank you to each and everyone of you thanks for your continued to support our cause. Furthermore, 41% of people exonerated from death row are Black (@deathpenaltyinformationcenter). In fact, innocent Black people spend an average of 13.8 years wrongly imprisoned before being exonerated — about 45% longer than innocent white people. Racial discrimination and bias have been ingrained in the criminal legal system from its earliest days and continue to pervade every level of the system. A precious and inspiring moment as @stanchart US/UK/Europe welcomed Dr. Yusef Salaam to speak at one of our #blackhistorymonth celebrations. Back in 1989, 5 teenagers, including the young Dr. Salaam, were falsely convicted in relation to the assault and rape of Trisha Meili, a woman in Central Park; they served sentences ranging from 7-13 years. More than a decade afterwards, a serial rapist confessed to the assault and a DNA evidence confirmed his involvement. The convictions against Dr. Salaam and his friends were vacated in 2002. What a life story ! The case is known as the “Central Park Five” later known as the “Exonerated Five”. You can watch the story on Netflix 🎥(When They See Us/2019/directed by Ava DuVernay). Thank you, Dr. Salaam for embodying hope and resilience, and for your continued fight for social justice. A Sunday Afternoon in Central Park: the only orange we wanna wear 3 x 5 ft Oil on canvas Do you remember your childhood drawings? The sun in the corner, the stick figure drawings of ourselves and our loved ones holding hands and smiling, the super green grass? This painting, rendered in an almost ‘too perfect’ manner, serves as a more complex realization of those drawings we made as kids. Depicted is one of those days we never want to end, but for the men represented, it did. Brutally. The Exonerated Five were each 16 and under when they were framed by police for a crime they did not commit. This piece reimagines what their afternoons might have been if they weren’t robbed of their college days. If they didn’t miss prom. If they were free to be the beautiful men of color that they are. I pray the sun continues to stay lit for you in spite of, so you can enjoy moments like these as if time never passed @dr.yusefsalaam @santanaraymond @koreykingwise @kevrichardson77 and Antron McCray 🫂 Thank you @ava x @whentheyseeus, we see them. #maiafaith #maiafaithart #centralpark5 #exonerated5 #whentheyseeus #yusefsalaam #koreykingwise #antronmccray #kevinrichardson #santanaraymond #blackandbrownunity #blackandbrownart #asundayafternoon #avaduvernay #whentheyseeusnetflix #upliftingart #blackboyjoy #brownboyjoy #eji #equaljusticeinitiative #wrongfullyconvicted #socialjustice #socialjusticeart #centralpark

Repost from @untilfreedom • @dr.yusefsalaam, brand new member of the @nyccouncil and one of the #exonerated5 was stopped by NYPD and not told WHY he was stopped. What makes this whole situation outlandish and political is that NYC Mayor Adams wants to veto police reform bills that require NYPD officers to collect data from these stops. Majority of those who get stopped by cops are Black and people of color and sometimes as we know, these stops can lead to grave consequences. NYPD leaders and the mayor are fearmongering and engaging in misinformation acting as if these laws are asking officers to write books instead of just clicking a few data points on an electronic device. We need transparency and we need NYPD to make stops based on reasonable suspicion not race and ethnicity - and if they believe they are - then they should have no problem collecting this data. We stand with Yusef. # howmanystopsact

Yusef Salaam, one of the members of the ‘Central Park 5,’ who later became known as the ‘Exonerated 5,’ has officially won the City Council District 9 seat in New York, NY. @dr.yusefsalaam ran unopposed in the Harlem district after winning the Democratic primary election earlier this year in a landslide. In 1989, a then-15-year-old Salaam and 4 other Black and Latine teenagers were wrongfully convicted of raping and beating a white jogger in Central Park. Salaam served almost 7 years in prison before DNA evidence exonerated him and the others. ‘For me, this means that we can really become our ancestors’ wildest dreams,’ Salaam, a Democrat, told the Associated Press prior to the election. He campaigned on combating the gentrification of Harlem, increasing affordable housing, prioritizing economic development, enriching schools and social services, bolstering public safety measures, and fighting for environmental justice. He says his life story and new political career serve as a symbol of the injustice that Black people in America are fighting against. ‘I am really the ambassador for everyone’s pain,’ he said. ‘In many ways, I went through that for our people so I can now lead them.’ #Repost @_notprisons #yusefsalaam #exonerated5 #harlem #nyc #election #politics #schoolsnotprisons

Massive congratulations to @dr.yusefsalaam @_notprisons Yusef Salaam, one of the members of the ‘Central Park 5,’ who later became known as the ‘Exonerated 5,’ has officially won the City Council District 9 seat in New York, NY.
