Your baby doesn't need to be days or a few weeks old to have newborn photos taken. Your baby can be anywhere between a few weeks to 3 months old and it can still be considered newborn photos. There are benefits to scheduling newborn photos at either time frame, too, enough so that you could even do two different sessions. They grow so fast during the first year of their lives and its a whirlwind. Each month truly is worth capturing. Those first two-three weeks, when they are so tiny and sleepy and rest in your arms make for serene, beautiful photos where you can sit quietly, soaking up their little features, imprinting their image onto your memories. At 3 months they are wide eyes, looking up at you, smiling, gripping you hair and fingers. They're amazed at the world around them and doting on you as much as you are doting on them. My in-home sessions are leaning more and more towards documenting what unfolds naturally between you and your loved ones. A couple years into my photography business, a friend of one of my clients gave me the sweetest compliment that I think about all the time. He told me he loved my work because it was different. He loved getting my client's Christmas card and seeing them share my photos online cause they stood out from the rest he was seeing. Walk in with an open mind to what your family can create during your hour with me that is unique to you, the moment, and will reflect your kid's personality in the best way. Sometimes when we have this perfect image in our mind of what we want from something (believe me, I do this all the time when creating for myself) you may miss the beautiful moments that are naturally unfolding in front of you. You may think about the missed moments you wanted instead of enjoying the moments that happened. Worried your home may be too dark for your newborn session? If you like the look of my photos, then you can take a big sigh of relief in knowing that the majority of my newborn images were taken on rainy, overcast days. All I need is one good window letting light into your room of choice. Here's a tip to make the most out of what little light may be available: move any large pieces of furniture away from being directly under the window, if possible. On rainy days (like today) we'll get nice and cozy up close to the window, so having space to do that helps a lot. These two <3 and their rescue pups On my list of location suggestions that I share with clients, I provide best time of day or year for different locations. And though I may bend to accommodate someone's preference on time of day, I strongly advise you to listen to your photographer's suggestions. Brackenridge Park is a perfect example of a spot I really only want to visit in the mornings. It's peaceful and has beautiful morning light. When its cold, the river has steam rising from it which makes for magical photos. And unless there's a race going on (like the morning of my minis), there's barely anyone around. In the summer, you can have family photos in the morning, get some coffee at Starbucks, then either ride the train, visit the zoo, or play at the kiddie park. the Portrait sessions I offer for kiddos are a bit different. They are designed to showcase your kid's spirit and personality and all the great things about childhood. There's no need for sitting still, smiling on command, or saying Cheese at these mini sessions. We explore, talk, play games. I let them warm up to me and my camera, have control over some of the photos and locations, and show off their skills/clothing/silly faces. In the end you get photos with natural smiles and expressions. Your images remind you of their giggle, how they found a billion rocks just for you, how they held your hand in the beginning before being brave and letting go, how walking backwards gave them so much joy, and had a great time just being themselves with their new photographer friend. These sessions are great whether your kid is 6 months old or 5 years old - and any age in-between. They're great to celebrate a milestone like walking, birthdays, lost teeth. I missed traveling. Being surrounded by new scenery and enjoying different weather is good for the soul. As I get older, the cons list about traveling has grown (like not sleeping on my mattress with my pillow, all my plants dying, having so much to do before after the trip) but the Pros definitely outweigh that growing list. On this trip, I got to photograph two sweet families among the golden hills of the bay area, visit with friends I haven't seen in a few years, and attend a wedding surrounded by redwood trees. And of course the 70 weather was very nice (I am so sad that its still 95 here in Texas). Definitely need to travel more in 2023. More maternity sessions like this please. I'm still obsessed with this session and forever will be. It opened my eyes to possibilities, created that intimate look and feel I want to incorporate more into my photos (but am always nervous to try), and I love the simplicity of wearing almost nothing. This family session was a dream. Let me tell you why. They were ready to play, cuddle, and explore with their little boy. They came with an open mind and let moments happens and unfold. There was even one moment where baby boy wasn't feeling it and cried a little and dad said Lets grab some photos of this. Because tears are as much a part of life as smiles. And I loved that they wanted to capture that, because I will always photograph a crying baby or toddler. And, those moments are fleeting. Within a minute he was back to being happy and giggly. The cherry on top was their wardrobe. Their coordinated outfits were perfect for this location and time of year. The green threading through everyone's outfit unified them without making them too matchy matchy. The fabrics were light and breathable, helping keep them comfortable (or as comfy as you can be on a hot and humid summer morning). They also matched their surroundings: earth tones, casual but not too casual for the modern architecture. My biggest tips for having a "successful" photo session is to relax, be yourselves, have fun, and let go of expectations.
