「That Place 🍳」 We all know that place right… 😂 Had a nice sunny brunch at this cafe in Mascot ☀️ - food is solid here and staff are friendly. The Breakfast in Dublin is super unique here - a very English take on a big breakfast, with blood sausage and pudding (I wasn’t the biggest fan but it’s interesting to try 👀!). I enjoyed the Creamy Garlic Chicken Pasta more though 🍝, and absolutely demolished the That Pancakes 🥞 (it’s simple yet sweet and delicious 😋). Coffee was solid here too ☕️. It’s conveniently located right next to a playground so it’s quite lively, though that also means it’s a bit loud with kids running around 🛝. KATZU KATZU (@katzukatzu_vp); Perth tonkatsu specialist. EATS: • Pork Katsudon ($22) • Pork Katsu Curry Udon ($24) • Squid Watermelon ($12) • Umami Fries ($8) Opted for the Berkshire pork in both dishes, as I read lots of reviews saying it was the stand out. However, we found the pork on the leaner side making it a little bit dry. Luckily both dishes came with ample sauce to combat the dryness. The fresh bread crumbed coating was fried to golden perfection; crispy, light and airy with no oily residue. Katsudon came with a luscious katsu sauce and gently cooked eggs, nestled on a bed of fluffy rice. The udon was enrobed in a mild, slightly sweet Japanese style curry sauce filled with vegetables (onion, potato, peas, capsicum and carrot). Crispy squid paired with juicy, chilled watermelon cubes, elevated with a sweet and sour coriander salsa - easily my favourite dish, just so damn good. Flavours were very reminiscent of the infamous Soft Shell Crab Watermelon dish from Nobu. Golden fries were generously seasoned with savoury bonito, sesame and seaweed - very tasty, like a bougie version of McDonald’s fries. Good, simple Japanese food done pretty well. It satisfied the katsu craving but nothing can beat the katsu experience in Japan. Definitely worth a try but probably not worth waiting in line for a long time, would be good if bookings were accepted.
SWAN SUSHI, RIVERVALE [Kou Sushi 2.0] A couple of weekends ago, we visited Swan Sushi, the newly opened successor to Kou Sushi, which sadly closed down last year. The ownership of the space was bought over by the folks at @chickenlab_perth, who are located right next door. We appreciate that not a huge amount has changed menu-wise from when Swan used to Kou Sushi, which was one of our favourite places for fresh sashimi bowls in Perth (RIP). 🍴🍴🍴 🎣 Kaisen Don $29 🍆 Miso Eggplant $14 🐟 Sake Don $26 🔥 Mixed Aburi Don $29 🥩 Beef Tataki $26 🍤 Tempura Prawn (4pc) $22 🍎 Fresh Apple Salmon Roll $23 The sides at Swan Sushi are just as good at Kou’s - with the tempura dishes being our favourite - such as the miso eggplant and prawn tempura. Their fresh apple salmon was certainly interesting, but not our cup of tea - it came generously filled with a sweetened cream cheese sauce which ended up tasting too rich for our tastes. While the quality of the fresh sashimi at Swan is definitely great, we feel that the portion sizes are fairly small (slightly larger than a small rice bowl), and for the price, we feel like it’s a little difficult to justify. However to be fair, they are quite generous with the actual amount of sashimi (the salmon slices in our bowls felt never-ending). But for people with larger appetites, you may feel a little disappointed. For lovers of the previous Kou Sushi, Swan Sushi is definitely worth a visit. But will Swan fill the Kou-shaped hole in your hearts? 📍La Bastide (8.5/10) Tucked away in a corner of Shenton Park, La Bastide serves up an indulgent French meal that will satisfy your tastebuds 🍽️ Entree ~ I love a good duck liver (foie gras) parfait ($28) and this was no exception. Executed seamlessly, this sinful plate was paired perfectly with chutney and gherkins, providing relief to the heavy umami pate. The steak tartare ($29) was definitely high on the tartare scale with a herbaceous flavour 🥩 For mains ~ To our pleasant surprise, the duck ($48) was a beautiful blushing pink, cooked perfectly tender and juicy! It was served with layered potato and a rich jus to match. Our fish had a tender texture, while the seafood bisque was rich and complemented the dish. 「Flying Tigress 🇹🇭 」 Flavours really be soaring at the Flying Tigress 🐅 I’ve found another Thai spot located in the heart of CBD (very close to World Square)! There’s a bunch of savoury dishes like Grilled Wagyu Fried Rice 🥩, Crispy Pork Belly Salted Egg Fried Rice 🍚 and Khao Soi Noodles 🍜. They’re all pretty decent (but not particularly mind blowing), but I really enjoyed their desserts selection - particularly the Ice Cream Ruam Mit (Thai Coconut) Bun🍨! The ice-cream was so refreshing inside the bun, really amazing snack (and you can even drizzle it with a side of pandan 🌿). The Pandan Covonut Toast 🍞 was also pretty good, though it was a bit too sweet for us to finish. IZYAN MALAYSIAN CUISINE, THORNLIE [Cravings Satisfied] Meals like these remind us that we really need to revisit Spencer Village a lot more often. The last time we were here was probably before COVID 😅. The Nasi Lemak at Izyan was one of our picks that we shared amongst other dishes that we ordered from other stalls at Spencer’s. 🍴🍴🍴 Nasi Lemak $15 + Ayam Goreng (Mamak Fried Chicken) $3.5 + Lamb Curry Unfortunately, Google Reviews don’t seem to be kind to this place. When it comes to food and reviews, we’d encourage you to trust your tongue and form your own opinions first, before seeing what others think 😋. The nasi lemak was beautifully fragrant, and full of pandan flavour. The fried chicken was the star of the show - marinated well (definitely tastes “mamak”, with strong tumeric, ginger and lemongrass notes), crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It’s a steal for $3.50 per piece. The fried anchovies and peanuts were interesting - spicy and somewhat candied with sugar. The lamb curry, while tasty, was inconsistent. SWEET LAND CAFE (@sweetlandcafe.perth); croffle and snow ice sale. EATS: • Matcha Red Bean Croffle ($13.90) • Black Sesame Milk Pudding Snow Ice ($14.90) I can never resist a good sale.. and sales are rare when it comes to food, so I had to finally come and try Sweet Land Cafe when I saw their new menu items were $9.90 each from 15 - 17 April (prices noted above are the regular prices). Croffle was nice and buttery but maybe lost some of its crispness from being smothered in cream. Matcha flavour in the gelato was strong and well balanced. Enjoyed the silky smooth matcha pudding but very disappointed there were only two pieces - I had seen other posts where people received a lot more. Black sesame flavour in the snow ice was too subtle for my liking; needed a bigger scoop of gelato and a lot more black sesame paste drizzle. Shaved ice was super light, fluffy and not too sweet. Milk pudding provided a nice silky, creamy texture. Overall, quite underwhelmed and lacked flavour.
KATZU KATZU, EAST VIC PARK [Pork Katsu Party 🐷] Previously known as Yuuma, Katzu Katzu is a new specialty katsu restaurant located in the same space in East Victoria Park. It features Berkshire Pork - known as the oldest registered breed of pig that has been kept by the royal family at Windsor Castle for centuries. Even though it’s been a few months since they opened in January, we still had to wait around 15-20 minutes for a table (a good problem for them to have!). 🍴🍴🍴 🐖 Pork Katsu Setto $21 🍲 Tonjiru Soup upgrade +$2 🐓 Chicken Katsu Udon $19 🥔 Spam and Cheese Korokke $6 Ordering via their online ordering system was easy and seamless (there was a 1% service fee though, FYI). We really enjoyed the freshness and quality of the crumbing itself. You can tell that fresh panko is used through the lightness and airiness of the crumb, resulting in a fluffy tasting katsu. The free flow rice and miso soup is an appreciated selling point (especially for people with larger appetites) and is reminiscent of tonkatsu restaurants in Japan that also offer free soup, rice, and cabbage refills. Our cuts of tonkatsu ran more on the leaner/drier side, so we did prefer our friend’s chicken katsu given it seemed to have a higher fat content. Having said that, being a katsu specialty restaurant, it’d be great to see different cuts of tonkatsu like hire katsu (pork fillet, more expensive and leaner) and rosu katsu (pork roast, cheaper and fattier). The tonkatsu sauce that is served in a charming ceramic capsule was also a delight, tasting rich and full of umami notes, and did elevate the taste of the katsu significantly. With the current wait times, we don’t see ourselves rushing back anytime soon. While tasty, there isn’t much to distinguish Katzu from other katsu offerings in Perth. I picked up: 🐟 Anchovy Toast ($7) 🍃 Spinach & Ricotta Croissant ($11.50) 🥔 Potato Focaccia I’m not usually a fan of anchovy, but this looked really good to decided to give this a try and this did not disappoint. The pastry was so flakey, and it was topped with labneh, pickled eschallots, chives and anchovy - such a delicious combo. The Spinach & Ricotta Croissant was buttery yet flakey, and had a generous spinach and ricotta filling - this was nice and cheesy.
