What is the significance of Jesus’ ascending into heaven seated at the Father’s right hand? Think of it this way: If it is advantageous to have friends in high places, then this feast reminds us that, with Jesus, we have the BEST Friend in the HIGHEST place! Before ascending, Jesus’ last great act was to send his disciples out on a mission to all the nations of the earth! But this great commission was also accompanied by a great promise: He would always be with them every step of the way! More than anything else, this promise comforted, motivated, encouraged, and emboldened the Apostles and early church to continue the saving work of our Risen and Ascended Savior because they knew that the One reigning in heaven is also here with us! How appropriate is it that we reflect on Jesus’ promise not to leave us orphaned as we celebrate Mother’s Day? The Feast of the Ascension does not only open us to see the heavens and the reality of spiritual body of the Risen Christ being taken up into those heavens to sit at the right hand of God, it also opens us to see the reason why Christ had to ascent: in order to release the Spirit and to attract everyone to him, who is the way the truth and the life, prepared before all ages to be the salvation of all people. In the Gospel passage we reflect on the universality of this action, or let’s say of new attraction. In John 12:32 the verse clearly does not only point to the Crucifixion, but also to the Ascension, which both are part of God’s salvific action in Christ. ”Will draw” can be understood to be a new law of attraction through God’s Spirit, a continuous attraction, which ends in the totality of everything being drawn back to the glory of eternal, blessed life with God in Christ. The attraction of God’s love in Christ is such that no evil, sin and separation can triumph over it. As Christ is this attraction all inclusively nothing can separate us from Them or from the salvation gifted in Them freely for all. There is a certainty in this verse that God in Their wisdom saves people, attracts people to Christ in the way God wants. And we have to realize that only God knows how this salvation is accomplished, fulfilled also through other religions or none. There is nothing else than a happy end forevermore, for all of us, gone, present and future. For the Queer people, these words of Christ offer a huge relief, a safe place where to dwell whenever someone uses Bible against them, judges them, denies salvation from them, from just being who they are. To say Christ “ascended into heaven and is now seated at the right hand of the Father” is to say His glorification as Son of God and Saviour-King is complete. He is now present to us in a different way: through word and sacrament, Church and saints, above all through the Eucharist in our bodies and the Spirit in our hearts. And as He glorifies His Father in heaven, He exercises His priestly office of intercession for us. The Resurrection and Ascension, then, are God’s big tick to Jesus. But they are also His big tick to every human being, from the tiniest to the oldest, as destined for heaven and so always worthy of awe, respect and care. This morning, we gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension with an all-school Mass. Our choir did an amazing job in their debut leading us in song! After the Mass, we recognized deserving students by awarding the Missionary Franciscan Students’ Scholarship and the Frances Welch Scholarship. The Franciscan Scholarship is given to a 2nd Grader who is a wonderful example of all that we strive for at MAA - respect for oneself and others, being a good friend, and someone who makes our school a better place. The Frances Welch Scholarship is given by a former grandparent to a deserving student in her memory. We also recognized a third grader who received honorable mention in the Casella, @casellawaste, Calendar contest. We are very proud of our students in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 who were recognized by Zaner-Bloser Inc., @zanerbloserinc for their outstanding handwriting. Many thanks to Fr. Jesus spent 40 days appearing to his disciples after his resurrection, teaching them and preparing them for their mission. On the 40th day, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit on them and was then “lifted up … out of their sight”. In a sermon from the early fifth century, St. Augustine of Hippo invites us to ponder the profound truths embedded within the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.
