How serendipitous to discover some of my favorite artists „all under one roof“! As the German expression „alle unter einem Dach“ goes, it suggests togetherness (of likeminded, but also opposites) in a sheltered spatial context. In the recent exhibition „Light Is Therefore Colour“ at Galerie Tschudi in Zouz, wonderful works of Carl Andre, Andrea Büttner, Julian Charrière, Federico Herrero, Bethan Huws, Callum Innes, Kimsooja, Martina Klein, donna Kukama, Katie Paterson, Su-Mei Tse and Dan Walsh come together. It’s still early, but already my fav exhibition of 2024. „Under the roof“ in a carefully restored traditional Swiss-Upper-Engadine house, the Galerie Tschudi became a „home“ for the arts, promoting international and Swiss contemporary art. The gallery showcases established artists and newcomers alike and publishes inspiring art catalogues and artists’ monographs. By the time we finished the gallery tour, day turned to evening, snow shifted from grey to blue hues, immersing into the dialogue of colors and lights of the exhibited artworks makes me want to explore their deeper meanings. Federico Herrero’s paintings, although visual works, share this essentially melodic form of composition. Their volumetric borders vary, creating ambiguity about where a shape emerges and where it ends, and the interaction between these shapes leads to existential questions about what it means for something to be solid, tangible and finite. We are delighted to show works by Federico Herrero for the first time in our current group exhibition LIGHT IS THEREFORE COLOUR at Galerie Tschudi in Zuoz. Federico Herrero’s work references and transcends traditional Latin American abstract painting styles by capturing the expansive landscapes in densely populated cities of Costa Rica in a poetic assemblage of shapes and colors. The artist’s comprehensive research on urban environments is complemented by his meticulous eye for the visual cultures which shape these spaces. Herrero captures the vibrant energies of his subjects in an enthralling manner, both entangling and highlighting the individual elements through his painting. The transgression and blurring of boundaries is seen both formally in his work, where the distinct color fields come together in a harmonious symbiosis, as well as in the artist’s personal interpretation of his surroundings – also on a social and political scale. Herrero studies liminal spaces between private and public – one border and another – and challenges the gallery setting through an installation-like approach that is interested in the tentative relationship between work and viewer. Federico Herrero was born in San José, Costa Rica in 1978 and currently works and lives in San José. Herrero studied painting at the Pratt Institute, New York, from 1997 to 1998. In 2001 he won the Special Prize for a Young Artist at the 49th Venice Biennale and since then has had solo exhibitions for example at Mac Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice, Kunstverein Freiburg, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco, TEOR/éTica in San José and 21st Century Art Museum of Kanazawa. Herrero has works represented in numerous public collections such as Tate Collection in London, Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection, MUDAM and Museo Reyna Sofia in Madrid, Spain. 🎨 Henni Alftan @hennialftan is featured today with two works from the series “Snowball,” in which she uses six color variations of the same motif by making the color palette, on the one hand, and the paper as support, on the other, the important protagonists of the image. Alftan’s works invite us to consider history, materiality, framing, and the departure from a clear narrative in painting. Despite a pared-down yet hyper-real aesthetic, the artist’s play with texture, scale, and perspective creates works that can be seen as metaphors for seeing and understanding the world through the properties of paint. The deliberate cropping focuses on both the current gaze and what lies beyond the edge of the image. Stefan Marx @stefanmarx gives a personal touch to a wide range of materials: be it paper, canvas, object or textile. In all media, his work captivates through his literally unmistakable handwriting. One of his most important characteristics is a humorous monochrome painting style based on texts. The three monotypes of Federico Herrero @federicoherrero are minimalist color interventions that find their inspiration from the Costa Rican artist’s environment, be it landscapes or urban impressions. Today we are featuring three monotypes by Frédéric Gabioud @fredgabiu and three monotypes by Elza Sile @elzasile , which are part of our current exhibition „monotypes shift“ part 1. Gabioud’s color applications are subject to a strict chromatic consistency, resulting in variations ofthe colors depending on the inclination ofthe work,the perspective and the light sources. In a tug-of-war with the surface,the artist takes the monochrome out ofits flatness by creating an effect of depth,thus creating small sculptural installations. Elza Siles’s monotypes hardly differ from her paintings, even though the color applications are not applied directly to the aluminum (the background of the painting), but rather by means of a transfer. In a playful way,the artist explores academic concepts such as the “grammar of painting” or the “construction of a painting” by interpreting these metaphorical concepts in a purely literal way. Federico Herrero makes colorful paintings, often on walls and as murals. Whether depicting recognizable objects or more generally abstract, his paintings have a consistent quality of rounded shapes, wobbling fields of color, and all-over markings. Herrero’s works are full of energy and life, hovering somewhere between painted-over graffiti and painterly abstraction.
