The inquisitive Canada Jay was a really fun bird to see in Algonquin Provincial Park. It rejected all of the peanuts that we offered to it, but it was quick to jump on a blueberry! As you can see, it is just covered in 4 bands in its legs. Although Canada Jay populations as a whole are stable, they are heavily declining in Algonquin. The Red Crossbill was one of the birds that I wanted to see the most on my trip to Algonquin Provincial Park, and they did not disappoint. Their crazy curved bills are actually a brilliant evolutionary strategy. These nomadic finches, albeit less so then their close relative, the White-winged Crossbill, use their curved bills to get into conifer cones that haven’t opened yet. They squeeze that crossed bill between the scales, open their beaks in order to pry open the cone, and use their tongues to get the seed out. This allows crossbills to get to seeds that aren’t accessible to other animals, or those that would take them much longer to get to. For example, Pine Siskins and American Red Squirrels will rip off scales to get down to the tasty seeds, a much more taxing strategy. Food is scarce in the north, and energy is precious. Ah, Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, the Nuthatch Suet…. I mean, Nutcracker Suite 😅😁😏 The acrobatic antics of my favorite “feeder bird” never disappoint, and will always amuse me. White-breasted nuthatches are adept at clinging and hanging on twigs and tree trunks in all manner of contortions, even more so than many woodpeckers. Also woodpeckers often use their tail as a prop against the tree, and nuthatches don’t do this - they rely completely on leg strength. For them, every day is leg day. WBNU also do embody the “nutcracker” spirit, as they are adept at doing just that. They’ll wedge a freshly found seed into a tree and break it apart with ease. Rosy-faced Lovebirds are a non-native species of African Parrot that have adapted really well to living the deserts of Phoenix, Arizona. They only really stay within the city, making them non-invasive. However, it's super cool to watch them sitting on cholla cacti, going into the saguaro cacti holes, and just flying around in the desert southwest. Goldfinches are one of the only vegetarian birds in the world. They survive off a strict diet of plants and seeds and are very common at bird feeders. They’ll feed off any type of bird feeder and will even eat off the ground below the feeder. It’s important to regularly clean your bird feeders, especially in warm or wet weather to protect goldfinches and other birds who visit feeders from passing and contracting dangerous diseases. It’s Bird Health Awareness week so we’re highlighting a native bird species every day this week! We’re starting off with the tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). These cartoonish birds are a very common visitor at bird feeders especially during the fall and winter when they hoard food. Tufted titmice are cavity nesters meaning they nest and lay their eggs in tree holes. However, they cannot excavate a hole in a tree themselves so they rely on old woodpecker holes often in dead trees. As winter drags on, you come to appreciate some of the more common species that visit the bird feeder. For some reason, I have a special place in my heart for white-breasted nuthatches. They were first songbird I held in my hand (while mist netting for the first time in college), and I love their shade of blueish gray. Their behaviors are amusing as well, acrobatically hanging on branches and zipping around vertically on tree trunks as they stash their recently found food in the cracks and crevices of the tree. Their little nasally whine is endearing too. They’re a pleasant and welcome year-round feeder visitor. Ramadan activity Yesterday I went with my elder Berry to the backyard and got upset to see a little hummingbird dead laid on the ground. I answered all questions Fatima about why, and how the bird died and we both felt upset. So today I decided to make something for birds and try to teach Fatima about kindness. We painted pots together for birds. We will hang these pots in the backyard where birds come and feed themselves. It's a little gesture to inculcate the act of kindness in Fatima. After the first pandemic lockdown started I got a window feeder to keep near my workspace and I came to know what species would show up when and familiarized myself with their calls. They got used to me being there all day and eventually I could take their pictures with my new lens (at the time) that’s 20x the size of them as they got comfortable with me.
