Money Is Time Cut Currency Collage (made from a single US dollar bill) 10” x 10” 2024 $688.80   My most recent cut currency work took hundreds of hours to complete.  For this piece, I welcomed the invitation to dance with time and to see if I could finish within 24 (non-consecutive) hours – an order of magnitude faster than usual. Sir, I told you not to play that song again. This was from my first night out in the new year, and also my first attendance at First Friday in PHX! (w/ the sign) Meet a lot of excellent kind people, even old friends, and it brought me joy to their faces light up; from shuffling up with the courage to ask for a piece, and watching them and their friends relax and enjoy throughout. It really reminded me of why I do this: Theatre and the arts as a whole can bring much needed catharsis to people, whether that be through laughter, sorrow, fear, or anger. On view in the gallery now as part of Regan Henley’s solo exhibition “ #NeverForget: Collective Trauma in the Age of Social Media” is the video piece “SLUDGE”. “SLUDGE” takes inspiration from a growing genre of online videos marked by their high stimulation, seemingly unrelated multi-screen content. These videos pull in many other internet niche content including ASMR, gameplay, and “oddly satisfying” videos in an effort to make high engagement content that games the social media algorithms by betting on one or more of the components to hold the viewer’s interest, thus increasing time watched.  This work is interested in the growing role of this type of content online, whose escapist sensory noise and sought after overstimulation suggest changes in our attention spans, and how we digest and process content.  As we continue to embrace high-stimulation escapism, “SLUDGE” questions its impact on our abilities to cope with feelings of discomfort in the face of tragedy, boredom and uncertainty. Tonight kicked off the first of several Fridays full of spicy events at Alwun House this month. The weather ended up not being a major concern for this outdoor vending event, the rain held off and the wind thankfully died down before the event started. Our fabulous team of volunteers were pouring drinks for the crowd in the Art Park all night and got us packed up quickly when it ended. I'm so grateful for the awesome people who also love Alwun House enough to give their time and energy to make events run smoothly. I grabbed a quick selfie after the wind partly restyled my hair for me in the afternoon. 😂 When I got home, I ran a bath and heated up these tasty gluten free, cheesy bread puffs with some red sauce. Don't tell me not to eat them in the bathtub because you don't know how much I couldn't wait to have both things. I was outside on my feet for 7.5hrs after a full day of studio work and appointments, but didn't have dinner, so hush. Next Friday is the opening night for the annual, much anticipated Exotic Art Show and an evening of unique entertainment for the Phantasmagorical Spectacular. Artist Regan Henley finds herself preoccupied with the things most of us would rather not dwell on. For the last decade her work has focused on death, grief and the accompanying discomforts we’d like to push down. Her upcoming solo exhibition “ #NeverForget: Collective Trauma in the Age of Social Media” zooms out even further, to focus on what happens to us on a society-wide level when we push down the traumatic impact of some of the worst things in recent history. The exhibition focuses on the psychological concept of collective trauma in the American consciousness, and how events like mass shootings, police brutality and natural disasters are woven in the fabric of the culture. The work aims to provide a validating reflection of the ongoing traumas in our world, but also draw a critical eye to the type of news coverage and discussion of these distressing events that often flattens them, and exacerbates their traumatic impact. This show will be on display till February 11th, 2024. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
