What the 787B lacked in pace against World Championship competitors such as Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Toyota, it made up for in reliability. At Le Mans in 1991 it was driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot. With its rotary “Wankel” engine it remains the only LeMans victory by a car not using a reciprocating engine design. It also was the first victory by a Japanese manufacturer and not equalled until Toyota won in 2018. Three of the 787B spec cars were built. Swipe ⬅️⬅️⬅️ 1992 Toyota 92C-V (chassis no 001) - The early 1990s was a dynamic era for endurance racing with a number of big manufacturers investing, one of them being Toyota. The 92C-V was a product of this investment and used the expertise of Japanese racing car constructor Dome. The objective was to build a totally reliable car, which whilst being fast would cope with the endurance challenge of the likes of Le Mans, though the cars were initially designed to compete in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship. Six of the 3.6 litre twin-turbo V8 800bhp cars were built and three of them debuted at the Suzuka 500km race. They were competitive though only finishing third, fourth and fifth, with no 001 taking the third spot. 001 together with 005 were then sent over to France for the Le Mans 24 as “back up” cars for the more fragile Toyota TS010s that were also entered. 001 was entered by Toyota Team Tom and run by Trust Racing, wearing the red and white livery pictured and driven by Steven Andskar and George Fouché together with Stephan Johansson. The car finished in fifth overall, but took the Category 2 class win with 005 in ninth. Remarkably both cars, with some modifications, raced again at Le Mans in the next two years. In 1993 the car was driven again by Andskar and Fouché, but this time with another Swede Eje Elgh. This time it finished in 6th overall behind the Cat 1 Peugeots, a TS010 and the other 93C-V chassis 005. In 1994 001 raced as an LMP car and traded the leading position with 005 for part of the race, before finishing 4th overall behind 005 in 2nd place.
