shared scars 🥹 story time… a little over 3 years ago i had to have a dermatofibroma removed from my upper back, to the right of my spine, to deter its development and attachment to my nerves. this benign mass and the recovery it would take, caused me to fall into a dark mental state. i needed something to help me get out of my head and back out into the world. my dad was here to assist me pre- and post-surgery, and suggested a furry friend… and one that would require me to GET OUT of the apartment. i had been inquiring about frenchtons because of my love for my aunt’s pup, luna, and found peter (now know as Rex 🦖). long story short, rex almost didn’t make it after a medical incident while still with the breeder and was the only survivor of his litter. i knew he was meant for me. we’re both fighters and survivors ♥️ he motivated me to get up and walk he encouraged me to be social he taught me patience he reminded me of how far I’ve come in life and he showed me what true love is fast forward to just a few days ago, when rex had emergency surgery due to a herniated disc that was causing paralysis in his back legs. even though we had two different diagnosis, how crazy is it that he too was affected on the right side of his spine? now i’m motivating him to get up and walk encouraging him to play teaching him the rewards of patience reminding him every day how strong he is and showing him how he loved he is constantly (maybe too much 🙈) we both share scars and stories of survival. he may have a long road to recovery, but don’t we all? healing is a never-ending journey, and i’m so grateful he is a part of mine. #cancersurvivor #healing #scars #frenchton #lifeaftercancer

It’s Monday, so that means it’s Max Monday time. And a heads up, I talk about pet loss today. Today, I want to talk about something that isn’t talked about (enough or even at all), and that’s taking care of a sick, senior dog. To be honest and transparent, it’s hard. It’s draining both emotionally and financially. It sucks. It’s honestly devastating. When you know your dog is nearing the end, the pain and anguish you feel is beyond words. Every day you sit and there and ask “is today the day? How long is this going to go on? How do I know when it’s time?”. Not exactly easy questions to ask yourself. But sadly, as pet guardians, these questions are part of having a pet. And when it does come to making that decision, all I will say is when you know, you know. In Max’s case, he declined so rapidly. He stopped eating (despite an appetite stimulant). He was exhausted. He couldn’t put weight on his back left paw because a massive mast cell tumour grew overnight. It was agonizing waiting for my vet to open on Monday and make that call. But, I also knew he would be at peace. And because he would be at peace, I was at peace. And to this day, I’m at peace.
Had the pleasure of having Leagh Huhta of @fortemolossers out to the property here in Southern California. This past year she has entrusted me with 2 of the most outstanding dogs I’ve ever owned. ☆Bruce D’Forte☆- a functional Frenchton, built like a tank and complete athlete for his breed type, and ☆Cordelia D’Forte☆- a true powerhouse Molosser who came ready to work the property on day 1, structure to die for, and the most balanced temperament a guardian breed could have, she’s a true staple of this land. Let me admit something: I don’t poke a needle into every tumor. Hair follicle tumors or benign sebaceous tumors rarely get the FNA treatment BUT there are a few criterion that put me on high alert for something less friendly. 1. Rapid onset and rapid growth. 2. Fur tufts coming out of an alopecic tumor (“pin feathering”), 3. A “sac-like” but not fluid-filled appearance to the tumor and 4. Breed-specific concerns (ie this was a blue Froston). I’m a big fan of 25g needles and the suction method for my tumor FNAs.
