Mountain Lion Spotted Saturday morning 9/2 it was drizzling, me and my pup were up the Laurel Canyon side …near the top …I saw what I thought was an off leash dog alone in middle of the trail…quickly realized it wasn’t a dog! Cliff Mays 1952 design went for $3 million. This v shaped floor plan in Studio City CA is 2,872 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms on 0.8 acres. Born in Ohio in 1876, Harry Fryman moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17, shortly thereafter landing himself a job as a bellhop at the Mt. Lowe Hotel. Before long, Fryman worked his way up the ladder to become the hotel’s manager, which led to his managing other establishments around Los Angeles, and eventually, to owning his own hotel, the Hayward, in Downtown Los Angeles. A shrewd businessman on top of being a real go-getter, Fryman also invested heavily in Los Angeles real estate, purchasing approximately 1,000 acres of then-agricultural and ranch land in the Hollywood Hills and San Fernando Valley, which was subsequently developed into Studio City. Looking to be in near-original condition, the three-bedroom, three-bath residence exudes an air of sturdy, unpretentious comfort. Sheathed in vertical board-and-batten, the 2,782-square-foot home features a V-shaped floor plan designed to maximize connection with nature and enable cross-ventilation. FRYMAN ROAD (Studio City) The popular trail that hikers call “Fryman Canyon” is technically in Wilacre Park; Fryman Canyon Park itself is on Mulholland Drive. Regardless, both canyon and road are named for Harmon Christian “Harry” Fryman (1876-1946), an Ohio lad who came to L.A. in 1893 and made his name in the hotel industry – from bellboy to manager to full-fledged hotelier. (The Hotel Hayward, opened by Fryman on Spring Street in 1906, still stands as the Hayward Apartments.) Fryman, who lost his wife Mae to pneumonia in 1918, owned more than 1,000 acres here by the 1920s. In 1939, he developed, with Donald Barker, part of it into an upscale housing tract called Briarcliff Manor. Fryman Road was named in 1941. Postscript: Some have claimed that Wilacre Park was named for “silent movie star Will Acres”, but there was no such person. The name – etymology unknown – comes from a company that owned the land in the 1970s. Previous owners include pharmacist Jules Viole, General Walter Perry Story, and the Lankershim Ranch Land & Water Company.
