As the town works on a zoning update, expected to be complete in the spring of 2025, the Group has joined fellow environmental organizations and civic associations in advocating for a “carefully defined development moratorium that would be limited to not only new resorts, hotels, and motels, but also new commercial development, major subdivisions, special exception permit applications, zone change requests, and use variances.” Major development projects threaten our land, water, wildlife, community character, and our very way of life. At a town hall meeting this past week, Group senior environmental advocate Jenn Hartnagel said: "There’s no better time than now. You have the legal basis to do it and you have community support for it... there’s no doubt Southold is feeling development pressure. You know it. I know it. Everyone in this room knows it." The Group has reviewed and supported numerous development moratoriums on the East End over the past two decades. Group environmental associate Kristen Bashen has been surveying birds for #ProjectFeederWatch, a community science project run by @cornellbirds. Since November, she's been observing the bird feeders at Downs Farm Preserve in Cutchogue, taking note of the number of birds and the different species that visit each day. 🐦️ You don't have to travel far to go birdwatching! This annual survey is a study of birds in North America found in backyards, nature centers, community centers, and more. 🦅 There are few things more exciting than the sight of that first raptor flying overhead in the spring. Ospreys have been a familiar sight here on Long Island for years now, and bald eagles are slowly following suit. But we almost lost them forever. First, hunting and destruction of their habitats caused a sharp decrease in their populations. Then in the 1940s DDT, a synthetic pesticide, became popular for use on farms and marshes. The effects were deadly. By the 1970s, it was estimated that there were just two bald eagles left in the entire state, and none on Long Island. Since then, the dangers of DDT have become clear, its use has ceased, and through diligent conservation efforts the populations of ospreys and bald eagles are bouncing back. 💧 The experiences of these two birds alone show how diligent we must be about the way we use and treat the land. The East End is not just a place for humans. We share this place we love with some amazing wildlife. “Steaming North” Just about a week ago, we were hit with that late summer heat wave for a few days. This was one of those mornings where, by 7am you are already soaked in sweat, no breeze, black biting flies swarming all over, the air is as thick as soup, as the humidity and air temps both hover at around 85.
