So what's the story behind the name? We love family names. My grandmother's name was Dorothy Gwin, named for her mother's maiden name of Gwin. My mother is Gwin, I am Elizabeth Gwin, and my daughter is named Betsy Gwin. Five generations of Gwin! It was only fitting that I name my cottage bakery in honor of my daughter, Betsy Gwin. After all, feeding Betsy is how the whole thing got started. Everything was going great with breastfeeding until it wasn't. Betsy hit a growth spurt, and I was struggling to keep up. I'm sure some of you can relate. It was SO STRESSFUL to worry about how I was going to feed my baby. I longed for peace of mind and ample milk supply. That's when I discovered lactation foods, also known as galactagogues. I started consuming these super foods and soon noticed an increase in my milk supply. After trying every recipe on the internet, I decided to try converting my grandmother's - Momma Dot as we called her - old cookie recipes into lactation cookies. Not only did they taste AMAZING, they were SO EFFECTIVE. Not only was I making more milk, I noticed a better quality in what I produced. It's like the thickness of my milk went from 2% to whole milk. Ed i miei nonni erano giovani e avrei potuto viverli ancora per molti anni… A mia figlia cerco di regalare tutti gli attimi con la nonna che ha più vicino. La porto ogni weekend e tutte le volte che si riesce dopo l’asilo. E la sua nonna non smette di essere la persona che cerca quando ha bisogno di più coccole del solito, non smette di essere importante. Ammetto che non sono grande utilizzatrice di cellulare quando si tratta di fare le foto, ne faccio pochissime col telefono. Ho bisogno di questi momenti per riprendere le persone che amo e immortalarle. Le fotografie sul telefono non mi basterebbero. La preparazione ad un servizio crea e dà importanza al momento. Grandma Betty! I have fond memories of her. She was always kind and loving and we established a fun pen pal ritual when I was younger. We would keep in touch writing letters to each other, and she would tell me stories of her childhood and younger life. She shared old black and white pictures as well from time to time. She raised my father and his siblings on her own since my Dad's father was not in the picture and was not the greatest guy from what we are told. She worked hard to raise her children and instill good values in them. I am forever grateful for having her in my life even if we lived in different states, for her love, kindness and for raising and loving her children especially my Dad who is a wonderful man. It's been a rough couple months. First my mom passed away on Feb 2nd. Now I am sitting here with my Nann who came home from the hospital on Monday. She is under hospice care. So I will be with her every day for as long as she is able to stay. I am grateful she is able to be home in her final days, but it is breaking my heart. My cat, Tinker, has been such a light. He has taken to sleeping on my arm with a paw over my heart. I melt. I love this picture of me with my grandmother, lovingly known as Momma Dot. She was truly a role model and just a blast to be around. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and music. Her will was strong, and her faith was stronger. I still use many of her kitchen tips and recipes. It's her old cookie recipe that is the base for the delicious lactation cookies that I bake. To my knowledge, there is no other recipe like mine out there. It is original and perfected through many batches. I am certain that Momma Dot would be so proud of what I have created with her recipe! The kitchen was the heart of her house. I can still remember pulling up in the driveway in our family minivan and seeing her waving at us through the window above the kitchen sink. It always smelled divine when we walked into her kitchen. We also couldn't wait to see what homemade dessert she had prepared for our visit. Such special memories! Family life revolved around the table where wholesome meals were shared. It is so tough to gather the household for a family meal in today's busy world, but I sincerely hope that this will encourage you to gather your family around the table sometime this week. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just a shared meal with fellowship and love.
