This week's Shooter showcase. Jamie's introduction to shooting was quite serendipitous, to say the least. While out for a leisurely country walk, a familiar scene for Jamie, he stumbled upon a local shoot where folks were enjoying a few drinks. Striking up conversations with the ladies and gents donned in tweed, Jamie found themselves invited to join the beating, an experience he absolutely cherished. Coming from a military background, Jamie had always harbored a passion for shooting. After a couple of seasons of participating in beating, his desire to shoot grew stronger. Determined to learn, Jamie sought the guidance of Mike Williams, a highly respected and patient instructor. Under Mike's tutelage, Jamie mastered the basics of gun safety and quickly honed his skills in hitting clay targets, particularly in the Skeet Discipline. Fast forward a few years, and Jamie has transitioned to Sporting Clays, armed with his trusted Browning 525 Crown. They frequent the Grimsthorpe Estate Shooting Ground, where he found the staff to be nothing short of fabulous. However, the unpredictable challenge posed by the wind has proven to be Jamie's toughest adversary yet, causing clays to go awry more than once. Prior to that, Britt spent several years as a beater on local shoots alongside her loyal spaniel, Lacey. Britt's entry into shooting took a significant turn upon discovering The Country Girls UK, which provided her with the guidance she needed. Through Instagram, Britt found her way to the club, led by Tania Coxon. Attending one of their tuition days proved to be the turning point. Subsequent outings solidified her passion as she explored various shooting disciplines. While Britt's journey began with clay shooting, her heart was set on driven game. The thrill of a game day held an unmatched allure for her, prompting her to pursue more opportunities in this realm. A dream trip to Scotland for wildfowling and deer stalking is on her bucket list. This week's Women Wednesday 🔫 Let me introduce you to Gemma, Gemma has been involved in the shooting industry her entire life, getting her first gun at the age of 14. She was born into the industry, with her father being a gamekeeper on their family shoot. Gemma considers herself lucky to have grown up in this environment, learning firsthand about shooting. After studying at Sparsholt College, she became a gamekeeper herself. Currently, Gemma predominantly shoots game and pigeons, and also enjoys shooting clays for fun and to keep her skills sharp out of season. She uses her 12 bore Beretta 686 special for these activities, as well as her Howa .243 rifle for vermin and deer control. As a female shooter, Gemma has faced the challenge of proving herself in a male-dominated industry. However, she believes she is making progress in earning her place. While Gemma doesn't have anything specific she would change about the sport, she would like to see more young people getting involved in shooting. She believes it's a valuable skill and an enjoyable pastime that more of the younger generation should experience. Anthony's passion for shooting began at a young age, as he shot his first competition in March of 1995 at just 10 years old. But his introduction to shooting goes back even further, as he fondly recalls carrying a .410 in the field with his dad before stepping into the competitive arena. Clay target shooting entered Anthony's life through hunting with his Father. With his family owning and operating a hunting preserve that included a small sporting clays range, Anthony had the opportunity to gain his skills from an early age. Starting with shooting clays off a manual handset trap, he quickly developed a love for the sport that would shape his future. Today, Anthony is a force to be reckoned with in the world of sporting clays and FITASC, wielding a Beretta SL2 with 32” barrels as his weapon of choice. But alongside his dedication to shooting, Anthony faces his own set of challenges. As the father of four children, ranging from 9 years old to 9 months, he grapples with balancing his desire to compete at the highest level with his responsibilities to his family and work. Despite his personal challenges, Anthony remains committed to the sport and its community. This week's Shooter showcase. 🔫 Conor's journey with shooting spans over 23 years, beginning when he was just nine years old and first introduced to a .22 rifle by his grandfather. Those early days were spent in the back of his grandfather's Land Rover, where he learned the ropes of controlling rabbit populations. As he grew older, he moved to larger calibers like the .222 and .308, using them for foxes and deer. Inspired by the gamekeepers he admired, Conor pursued the profession himself, he now has over a decade of experience as a gamekeeper in North Wales. His introduction to clay shooting came with a 12 bore IAB for skeet, but Conor's interests evolved towards sporting layouts. Today, he prefers his 12 bore Beretta 687 Silver Pigeon V, with its stunning color-cased-hardened finish. Conor faces challenges unique to his profession. Keith embarked on his shooting adventure back in 2003, initially as a source of enjoyment that has now spanned two decades. His introduction to the world of shooting came through his military experience, having served in the Royal Air Force Regiment. His shooting discipline of choice is Olympic/Perazzi HT3, a testament to his dedication and skill in the sport. Despite facing challenges as a wheelchair user, Keith has overcome barriers to pursue his passion. One of the significant hurdles Keith has encountered in his shooting journey is the issue of access, particularly for disabled shooters. He advocates for greater inclusivity in the sport, hoping for positive changes to provide equal opportunities for everyone. Keith's journey began in his youth when he joined the Air Training Corps (ATC), following in his father's footsteps. His military service continued in the Royal Air Force Regiment until he transitioned to civilian life after completing his regular service. Although he spent 4 years in the Territorial Army, he had to step back due to university studies. In a pivotal moment in December 2000, Keith experienced a road traffic accident that left him in a wheelchair. Undeterred by this life-altering event, he took up clays in 2003. Through dedication and perseverance, he progressed to Olympic/Perazzi HT3 shooting in 2017, reaching an impressive milestone by earning a spot on the GB team in 2018. Keith's story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of one's passion despite challenges. His advocacy for greater access to disabled shooters reflects a desire for a more inclusive and supportive shooting community. Arizona has become a major locus of the illicit gun trade arming Mexican cartels with weapons from the United States. Data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reveal that, between 2014 and 2018, almost 1 in 5 weapons found in crime scenes in Mexico and traced back to the United States originated in that state. I recently traveled to Arizona to meet the owner of one of the gun stores targeted by Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration. Plump, with spiky hair and small, lively eyes, Veerachart Danger Murphy has an effusive personality. He assured me that “Danger” was part of his name from birth. He called Ammo AZ, his business in north Phoenix, the “Apple Store of gun stores” because everything is on display for customers to interact with. The floor, designed for showcasing weapons, resembles Apple’s display tables, allowing customers to spend hours handling hundreds of firearms of different calibers. The yellow walls are adorned with rows of shotguns and semiautomatic rifles, including custom branded weapons. According to Murphy, Marvel-themed AR-style rifles have become “very popular.” Murphy has a peculiar sense of humor. After the Mexican government’s lawsuit, he doctored up a fake mug shot of himself, with text overlaid: “Wanted Internationally — Arms dealer at large.” Despite the accusations and the tragic consequences of Arizona’s gun trade, Murphy said he sees no fault in his business practices. He dismissed the lawsuit as a political stunt, attributing it to former foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard’s electoral ambitions. “It’s a silly lawsuit!” he told me. But the Mexican government’s lawsuit is no laughing matter. It suggests that armories including Ammo AZ are part of a gun-trafficking system that fuels violence in Mexico. He explored Olympic Trap, Universal Trench, and Double Rise. This year, his ambition is to represent both England and Great Britain in Olympic Trap.
