Lambing It’s been a tough few weeks for lambing across Scotland and we’ve had a particularly cold and wet one here. It’s not over yet, but the weather has changed and there’s new lambs everywhere you go. They are all very cute, but this one has to be our favourite! A pet lamb that’s starting life in our byre. She’s doing really well and will soon be running about the croft with her pals. Look at those massive lugs! 🤩 #Lambing2024 #Cheviots #Crofting #PetLamb #Lionacleit #Benbecula #Uist #IsleOfBenbecula #OuterHebrides#WesternIsles #ThisIsScotland #VisitTheOuterHebrides #Hebridean #HebWay #VisitOuterHebrides #OuterHebridesCollective #HebrideanWay #SeeUistSoon #VisitScotland #LoveScotland #ScotlandLover #ScotShots #UnlimitedScotland #InstaScotland

Lionacleit machair Just before lambing, crofters were spreading seaweed and manure on the machair. Some areas are now ready to be ploughed and seeded. This traditional, low intensive and sustainable, approach to agriculture has been happening here for many generations - probably thousands of years. This has led to the creation of incredibly high quality soils that not only provide growing conditions for low carbon animal feed and epic potatoes, but also sustains life for globally important biodiversity and birds. ‪ #Lionacleit #Benbecula #Uist #Crofting #Machair #Ploughing #SustainableFarming #CroftLife #IsleOfBenbecula #OuterHebrides#WesternIsles #ThisIsScotland #VisitTheOuterHebrides #Hebridean #HebWay #VisitOuterHebrides #Biodiversity #OuterHebridesCollective #HebrideanWay #SeeUistSoon #VisitScotland #LoveScotland #ScotlandLover #ScotShots #UnlimitedScotland #InstaScotland

Running at Pol na Crann This is one of the longest continuous stretches of beach in Benbecula. On May 4th, alongside beaches at Lionacleit and Culla Bay, it will form part of the first ever “3 beaches half marathon”. Not so much a race, but depending on the tide and the weather, an assault course on the way to the pub! 🍻🏃‍♀️ 🏃 🏃‍♂️ #Beach #PolNaCrann #Benbecula #Uist #Running #Footsteps #IsleOfBenbecula #OuterHebrides#WesternIsles #ThisIsScotland #Sand #VisitTheOuterHebrides #Hebridean #HebWay #VisitOuterHebrides #Machair #Coast #OuterHebridesCollective #HebrideanWay #SeeUistSoon #VisitScotland #LoveScotland #ScotlandLover #ScotShots #UnlimitedScotland #InstaScotland

Spring Cleaning the hostel this week to get it ready for opening as normal next week. Taking some time today though to enjoy the lovely weather and look a this amazing goodbye cake one of our longer term guests made us 😍. After a walk on the beach, tea and cake in the garden before I do anything else 😁 #hebhostel #hebway #visithebrides #stornoway #ihuk #scottishhostels

Spreading seaweed at Liniclate machair. It’s a busy time of year getting the ground ready for sowing. With feed and fertiliser costs still very high, the seaweed is a really valuable asset. Crofters have been doing this for generations and have built up high quality productive soils. It also provides a range of habitats and an array of wildflowers. A mixture of things will be grown here - hay, corn, barley and the legendary buntàta. #Machair #Seaweed #Lionacleit #Benbecula #Uist #IsleOfBenbecula #OuterHebrides#WesternIsles #ThisIsScotland #VisitTheOuterHebrides #Hebridean #HebWay #VisitOuterHebrides #Crofting #CroftLife #OuterHebridesCollective #HebrideanWay #SeeUistSoon #VisitScotland #LoveScotland #ScotlandLover #ScotShots #UnlimitedScotland #InstaScotland

In September, I walked along the stunning @hebrideanway @visitouterhebrides Anyone doing it 2024 - it is tough, it is beautiful, your feet WILL get wet, the midges WILL bite (take a net), and the locals are super 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Take a diversion to Luskentyre....you're welcome 👍🏻 Enjoy ❤️ #outerhebrides #hebway #hebrideanway #hebrideanwaywalking #hebrides

Effie the hen enjoying some corn and porridge. She is a Cream Legbar and has just started laying small blue eggs. She was bottom of the pecking order for a while and would run away from the other hens when the treats came along. But she’s much more confident now and gives as good as she gets! And Effie and her sister (Shakira) definitely have the fanciest haircut 💇‍♀️ ✨ #Chickens #CreamLegbar #Hen #Lionacleit #Benbecula #Uist #IsleOfBenbecula #OuterHebrides#WesternIsles #ThisIsScotland #Crofting #VisitTheOuterHebrides #Hebridean #HebWay #VisitOuterHebrides #OuterHebridesCollective #HebrideanWay #SeeUistSoon #VisitScotland #LoveScotland #ScotlandLover #ScotShots #UnlimitedScotland #InstaScotland

Was surprised to wake up this morning to a snow scene. Unfortuately it meant a group due to stay with us tonight were unable to travel. So... Sledging it is. #hebhostel #stornoway #hebway #visithebrides

Hope you are all having a great start to 2024. No better way to start the year than a dunk in the Hebridean January waters ❄️. Had an awesome afternoon in the new mobile sauna @saltboxsauna A definite 'must do' when visiting Lewis and Harris as it can be hired exclusively at many of our beauty spots. #hebhostel #hebway #saltboxsauna #visithebrides #scottishhostels #ihuk

This lonely house could have a spectacular view, they built houses with the weather in mind rather than the view in these days. #hebrides #derelict #hebway #outerhebrides

Day 15 Hebridean Way. The last day, a very fitting end to a wonderful trail. So glad to have kept walking to that lighthouse and the finish sign. If I do it again I’m going to start at the Butt and walk south to Vatersay. I like the idea of leaving a relatively “busy” Lewis and getting more remote as I go. It’s not out of the question, I’d like to spend a few months on these islands.

11/5/2023, 7:02:23 AM

Day 14 Hebridean Way. I found a better way- a fantastic section of coastal path and the goodness of these fine islander folks. A ride across some water on the ATV, lots of friendly chats, dramatic coast and a chance meeting on a bus

11/5/2023, 6:54:17 AM

Day 13 Hebridean Way was road walking, busy road walking. Not ideal, should have found a way into the coast but I was determined to cover the distance. I also wanted to stay at the historic Cross Inn. The three days from Stornoway made use of a yo-yo circuitous route and the bus service.

11/5/2023, 6:48:41 AM

Day 12 Hebridean Way. Laxay to Stornoway. This section signals the end of the official walking route. It’s some beautiful moor and peat “path” walking and a whole lot of road to Lews Castle in Stornoway. I get there late arvo just in time for the cafe to close. I’m not done though. I’m walking to The Butt, it feels more like an end point

11/4/2023, 6:05:03 AM

Hebridean Way Day 11. Scaladale/ Ardvoulie to Laxay (and hitch back to Scaladale). The trees were a standout feature today, beautiful to have a tree canopy and traditional northern hemisphere vegetation. It was also pretty rainy and some decent boggy moor stretches. It’s very cool to drink coffee under an ancient bridge though and traverse old roads. A long windy route through Balallan before a kind lady driver plus family dropped me back at Scaladale- I have 3 lovely cyclists for company tonight.

11/4/2023, 1:16:25 AM

Hebridean Way Day 10 Drinishader to Scaladale. A glorious sunrise- squeaky clean with a big breakfast on board. Superb walking. Tarbert and the release of a new batch of whisky from the Harris Distillery. A coffee shop with slices. Harris hills. Stunning colour. Community forest. Sleepover at the deserted Scaladale Outdoor Centre.

11/1/2023, 1:05:36 AM

Hebridean Way Day 9 Horgabost to Seilebost to Drinishader A better day. Stormy beaches. An aggressive dog. The Coffin Road. Beautiful rugged hills and lochs of Harris. Golden path, scholars path, a closed community cafe - lunch at the recycling bins and a great solo stay at a hostel in Drinishader.

11/1/2023, 12:57:59 AM

Hebridean Way Day 8 Berneray to Seilebost (and bus backwards to Horgabost) 25km. Not my best day. Sleepless night waiting for the alarm, pitch black rainy departure from the hostel to the ferry terminal. Relieved that it sailed, tough day of moors and bogs and rain. The worst afternoon ever culminating in a frustrating exercise in tent pitching in the howling wind and rain. Chips for dinner before dark- why the hell not?

10/31/2023, 12:40:36 PM

Hebridean Way Day 7 Lochmaddy to Berneray A very tiny day of only 23km Up 301m, down 312m You guessed it… moors, sheep. Lochs, bogs, wind, rain and hills. A beautiful day started on the bus back to Lochmaddy to walk back to Berneray hostel where it was a wet and wild night, howling winds in lovely company of 3 cyclists. Anticipation for an early start tomorrow- will the ferry go??

10/31/2023, 9:48:37 AM

Hebridean Way Day 6 Moorcroft, Carinish to Lochmaddy. Soggy, boggy moors, lochs and lochans, swanky lodge with cake, standing stones, hills, bears in the woods, funghi in forests, yo-yo hiking, a local bus and the packed to the gills Berneray Hostel

10/31/2023, 4:26:29 AM

Hebridean Way Day 5 Nunton Hostel to Cairinish- Moorcroft Camping site Only 24km today! A windy Ruabhal summit, lochs and moors, Grimsay and North Uist, roads and the best campsite ever- Moorcroft. A decent storm and a lesson in guy ropes. Alas a cloudy sky- no Aurora for me

10/31/2023, 3:54:42 AM

Hebridean Way Day 4- Our Lady to Nunton. Started quietly on a Sunday morning with a hitchhike back to the statue then a bogging in the moors. Windy picnic at the wind turbines, rainy causeway at Benbecula, an open co-op for a yoghurt and s as bag of chips and back on the coast to Nunton.

10/30/2023, 11:40:36 PM

Day 3 Hebridean Way South Uist to the Our Lady Statue and back track to Howmore Hostel. Donald the cattle farmer fills my water bottles. Geese and starlings flock noisily. I meet the moors. The Our Lady Statue (built as a symbol of community resistance to a proposed missile launch site and dry my tent site) is boggy. I walk way up hill and all around the radar site and the Scottish water plant but there is no firm ground- my wild camp is abandoned, I hitch back to the Howmore hostel where I stopped at lunch time to refill all my water bottles

10/30/2023, 1:52:54 AM

Hebridean Way Day 2 Barra Ferry Terminal to Eriskay to somewhere past the Askernish Golf Course on South Uist. These will be the only actual otters that I will see

10/29/2023, 10:25:14 AM

Hebridean Way Day 2 Vatersay to Barra Ferry Terminal - exceptional weather, good cross section of terrains, 1 really big hill, some boggy stuff, sheep and a hitchhiking experience with a man, a gun and a dead goose

10/29/2023, 6:40:16 AM

Hebridean Way Day 0 Landing on a beach
