Francis Scott Key was born on August 1st, 1779 in Frederick, Maryland. Most commonly know for writing the words of our Star Spangled Banner, Key was also an accomplished lawyer. Born to a plantation owning family, Key had a conflicted relationship with slavery. He often defended enslaved individuals seeking freedom, even though he owned up to 6 slaves by 1820. Key also founded the American Colonization Society in 1816. The purpose of the society was to promote the emigration of African Americans from the US to Africa. On this day in 1670, the Italian composer Giovanni Bononcini was born. He was trained as cellist in Bologna, where he published several pieces. He was a member of the Accademia Filarmonica, a musician at San Petronio, and maestro di cappella at San Giovanni in Monte until 1689. No stranger to royalty, he composed pieces for the Duke of Moderna, Leopold I in Vienna, Emperor Joseph I, the Duchess of Marlborough and the Earl of Burlington, eventually becoming a composer for the Royal Academy of Music under Handel's direction. He finished his compositional career in Vienna, where he died in 1747. On this day in 1804, the Alexander Hamilton - Aaron Burr duel took place in New Jersey. The duel was a duel fought at Weehawken, New Jersey. It occurred at approximately 7 AM and was the culmination of a long and bitter rivalry between the two men. Unlike Manuel Miranda writes in the musical, Hamilton shot first, only to miss and hit a tree directly behind Burr, who then responded by shooting and mortally wounding Hamilton, who was carried to the home of William Bayard Jr. Watch the musical to know how the duel ended! Alexander Hamilton is a Founding Father of the United States. He was an influential interpreter and promoter of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the U.S. Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. She has directed, devised, and produced in NYC, Minneapolis, and the Triangle. A passionate arts educator, Johannah has been a teaching artist at Raleigh Little Theatre, Arts Together, Sterling Montessori, LearningSpring, NC Governor’s School, and at Longleaf School of the Arts. Johannah is a Chief Rep for PAAL, the Parent Artist Advocacy League for the Performing Arts and serves on the Arts Learning Community for Universal Access through the Office of Raleigh Arts. She also serves on the SETC Equity Diversity Inclusion + Access Task Force. Johannah is a graduate of NYU/Tisch School of the Arts/Playwrights Horizons Theatre School.
