From the world premiere of EYE OF MNEMOSYNE, a 23’, seven-movement multimedia orchestra piece with visual libretto by Deborah Johnson (@candystations), commissioned by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for its centennial season. EYE OF MNEMOSYNE explores memory as a deity while illuminating the advent and influence of George Eastman’s Kodak on 20th century American history. In this narrative, we reimagine George Eastman as a vessel of the Greek Goddess of Memory, Mnemosyne, and focus on the essential role that women — the Kodak Girls — played in Kodak’s success. Here the Kodak Girls are presented as descendants of Mnemosyne, muses who influenced and inspired how Americans began to arrange, capture, and experience their lives’ recollections using the instrument of the camera and the power of the snapshot. In the twenty-first century, the wealth of and accessibility to repertoire of all countries, periods, and styles has provided singers with ever more distinctive and challenging works for use in performance and study. However, the abundance of vocal works by women composers is still significantly underrepresented. Our audiences deserve the most creative programming options available to us, yet the overwhelming tendency is still to look to “well-used” works for our inspiration. Through the use of sound recordings and extensive repertoire lists, this session will offer an introduction to a variety of vocal works by women composers of the 20th-and 21st-century; integrating works that reflect the aesthetic of our time by composers of our time. Our guest teacher: Dr Caroline Schiller, a versatile performer, is praised for her commitment to contemporary repertoire. She has created and performed contemporary opera, theatre, and concert works with companies that include the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, The Banff Centre, The Tanglewood Music Center to name a few. Her doctoral treatise is a comprehensive annotated bibliography entitled: A Performer’s Guide to Works for Soprano Voice by Canadian Women Composers, now a practical guide for singers. Equally at home with opera and musical theatre performance, she has sung with L’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, The Boston Symphony Chamber Players and played role of Christine in the original Toronto cast of Phantom of the Opera. Presently Professor of Voice and Director of Opera Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, she is also founder and director of Opera RoadShow/Opéra en tournée, an opera touring with university students. Caroline is the current Chair of Research for National Opera Association and District Governor of Canadian Atlantic Provinces Chapter of NATS and its former Chapter President. Thirty orchestras from across the United States will take part in the @orchleague Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. This national consortium ensures that new works by women and nonbinary composers will receive multiple performances throughout the country. The consortium’s initial six lead orchestra-composer pairings were previously announced, with more than fifty orchestras applying for the additional twenty-four spots. In this presentation, we will examine some of the myriad ways jazz patriarchy has been at work over the past century, focusing particularly on its impact on jazz’s audiences and musicians. Throughout, we will balance jazz patriarchy’s historical weight and impact with some of the work musicians like Terri Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding have undertaken to redress its legacy. To be a woman in jazz (or a woman who enjoys jazz) is to contend with jazz patriarchy. Jazz patriarchy has developed its own language, values, and relationships, which determine what sounds were curated as “real” jazz, how women were depicted in jazz imagery and literature, which audiences were welcomed in which jazz spaces, which musicians were admitted to the jazz canon, and more. Last week I delivered a score and original song for an upcoming project, and this week I'm editing the video footage from the recording session together! 🤩 What I absolutely love about this is that there are so many close-ups of the musicians which gives you a great insight into how they perform specific articulations (col legno in this case). Time for a little band appreciation! I’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked with such incredible musicians for so long– when we play together, there’s an atmosphere of trust and appreciation for each other, and that’s something I definitely don’t take for granted. Jamie, Gary and Nathan have been my main rhythm section since 2018, and everything feels easy knowing that I have these guys supporting me! Elsa rounds out the front line for this ensemble, and she brings a ton of energy and joie de vivre, and I think that really shows on the album. One of the things I love most about this band is that while they’re really capturing the spirit of my music with honesty and authenticity, they still maintain their individuality as musicians in a really beautiful way, and they each still manage to surprise me and keep me on my toes musically. 🇨🇵 J'ai eu l'immense plaisir de faire cette première conférence sur deux artistes absolument formidables : la compositrice, pianiste (et +) Rita Strohl et le musicien, peintre et maître verrier (et+) Richard Burgsthal. Ces deux personnages, qui font aussi partie de l'histoire de l'@abbaye_de_fontfroide , ont su fusionner leurs passions par la musique, les arts plastiques et la pensée Wagnérienne. Rita a choisi la solitude de sa "Tour d'Ivoire" pour nous laisser une œuvre colossale, pas encore entièrement rédecouverte. Burgsthal, lui, montrait ses talents de peintre et aquarelliste, inspiré grandement par les œuvres de Rita Strohl. Leur rêve de construire un petit Bayreuth n'a peut être pas pris la forme que Rita espérait, mais leur collaboration a fait naître un art dit Cosmique et transcendant. Je m'en suis laissée complètement envoûter. Je remercie tout particulièrement les brillantes @celia_oneto_bensaid (pianiste) et @heloiseluzzati (violoncelliste) pour leur magnifique interprétation de l'œuvre de Rita Strohl : "Solitude" (généreusement prêtée pour l'occasion de ma conférence) ainsi que @laboiteapepites_womencomposers. Maria Ágata Szymanowska, nombre de soltera Marianna Ágata Wołowska (Varsovia 1789-San Petersburgo 1831) fue una compositora y pianista polaca. De talento precoz, dejaba a la audiencia sorprendida por la calidad de sus improvisaciones a la espineta. Desde 1805 y 1806 estuvo activa dentro de los círculos musicales de Varsovia. La joven «Marynia», ya bien conocida en los salones de Varsovia, fue enviada a París. Su marido y su familia se opusieron a que emprendiera una carrera como pianista y compositora. Estaba mal visto que una mujer de buena familia realizara espectáculos. Por este motivo, en 1820 el matrimonio se divorció y los niños permanecieron con María después de su separación. Idolatrada en vida e injustamente olvidada tras su muerte, fue una de las primeras profesionales virtuosas del siglo XIX. Viajó extensivamente por toda Europa, antes de establecerse permanentemente en San Petersburgo. Aparte de ser una virtuosa pianista de concierto, también es reconocida como compositora.
