Earlier winter morning of the historic Tombland Alley in Norwich. Oil on canvas,40x30cm Norwich Historical streets series Not precisely a tourist attraction, yet easily one of the most recognisable historic landmarks in Norwich, and probably one of the most photographed buildings in East Anglia, this attractive timber-framed building stands directly opposite the main entrance to the Cathedral Close. The house was built in 1530 for Augustine Steward, and was famously used by royal troops sent to quash the 1549 Kett Rebellion. Steward led negotiations between the rebels and the king's army, and entertained the king's representative, the Marquis of Northampton, at his house. Part of the old riverfront area in Norwich. This particular building has been used as a warehouse since the early 1900's on and off. The superb book Tombland by CJ Sansom about Ketts Rebellion in 1549 fired my imagination. I took some photos around significant areas mentioned in the book at the weekend and was blessed with sunny, blue skies. 1549 is such a significant date in the history of our wonderful county and yet not many of us realise. Where I am hankering for the countryside my sister has moved to central Norwich, so before a visit for tea we had a walk around the cathedral .It has been a dreary and cold beginning of the New Year here , but the cathedral huge though it is was warm and bright ! The pictures aren't so good as I only had my phone which doesn't have the best camera. The candle picture is of a peace globe , the lion is a dear little chap in the choir, the wonderful stone figure is actually Saxon and is of St Felix who brought Christianity to East Anglia. The reflective photo is of the font which is actually two giant coppers which were given to the cathedral when the Rowntrees chocolate factory closed . There use to be the most delicious smell of chocolate in the city when I use to go to college there ! I love the cathedral, the cloisters are wonderful and full of fantastic painted roof bosses but they need a sunny day as does the spire to be truly appreciated !
