The Morlock family stone at Union Cemetery no. 2 in Plymouth, Indiana. I think this one is just so beautiful and unique. • The grave markers for those mentioned on the family stone are nearby. Head over to my story today for a look at the family plot. I’m often asked if family stones are doubling as grave markers, and the answer is always no, family stones are not grave markers. The shot of the family plot provides a better look at where the family stone is in relation to the grave markers. • Those mentioned on the family stone and buried here are: -George A. Morlock who died January 16, 1894 aged 73 years, 5 months, and 15 days. His grave marker only says ‘Father.’ -Elizabeth, his wife, who died April 8, 1920 aged 85 years, 9 months, and 6 days. Her grave marker only says ‘Mother.’ • George Adam Morlock, a farmer, was born in Germany on August 1, 1820. He arrived in the United States aboard the ship Scotland in 1848, and he married on April 10, 1853 in Ohio where his wife, Elizabeth Zechiel, was born on July 2, 1834. The couple made the permanent move to Marshall County, IN soon afterwards, and the first of their ten children was born there in 1854. Mr. and Mrs. Morlock died several years apart from one another, but both passed away in the Indiana county where they put down roots. • • • #unioncemetery2plymouth

Well, here it is! The special tree-stump tombstone I was looking for in Marion, Indiana during the solar eclipse on April 8. It may not look like anything special from the front where nothing but fern fronds and a calla lily are featured, symbols commonly found on these type of monuments, but the back side holds something special—a heron. • While I’ve seen countless herons on grave markers, this is the only heron I’ve ever seen on a tree-stump monument, and it may actually be the oldest stone I’ve found with a heron displayed. Normally when I find one it’s on a modern marker, and oddly enough, while I was searching the cemetery for this particular stone and struggling to locate it I exclaimed to my husband at one point, “Where is this heron?!” and then rounded the corner only to look right at a heron on a new stone. 😆 I was like, “Yea, I see you, Universe. You always got jokes.” • Research into herons took me all over the place, and regardless of all the research done I still don’t feel confident speaking to what this heron is likely representing for the Peters family. I have only a theory. It’s a rare and interesting symbolic choice for people of their time. I hope you’ll feel free to share any of your thoughts on herons with me in the comments! I can absolutely say, though, that without a shadow of a doubt this is not a Woodmen of the World stone. Mr. Peters died two months and one day before the organization was created. • Samuel S. Peters(1830-1890) was a lifelong Indiana resident who kept a farm. He rests here next to his wife, Cynthia(1837-1931), at Estates of Serenity Cemetery(a.k.a. A weeping willow for Ohio native Deloss Brown who died July 18, 1865 aged 33 years, 3 months, and 14 days. He rests at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan. • Weeping willows are heavily associated with grief and mourning. Their natural “weeping” position plays into that, but willow branches were also at one time placed atop coffins, and even used to line graves, as they were thought to help souls pass into the afterlife. The Greek goddess Hecate associated with the underworld also has links to the willow. Eco-friendly caskets used in green burials can even be found made of willow. • The delicate willow is light, flexible, and pliable, and yet strong at the same time. With that they’re also associated with strength and adaptability. Willow is a popular material used for basket weaving, and it’s has been used plenty of times for the baskets that hold passengers on hot air balloons. Protection can also be represented through willows as some cultures think the willow provides protection from evil spirits. Other cultures see it as a symbol of good luck and wisdom. • It’s a beautiful, simple symbol that carries with it a great deal of meaning. Herman(1911-1945) resting at Saint Joseph Polish Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. “Beloved wife” • Theresa Maryja Zarobinski was a lifelong South Bend, IN resident who was born August 17, 1911 to Polish immigrant parents. She married Bert Herman(1908-1980) on June 2, 1936, and one child was born to their union before Theresa’s death on May 20, 1945. • While Theresa’s mother never held a paying job, Theresa herself did. She was shown across documents as a launderer even after she became a wife and mother. The Cessna family stone at I.O.O.F.(Odd Fellows) Cemetery in Rochester, Indiana. Lemuel Cessna(1867-1912) and his wife, Hattie(1871-1946), rest here in the family plot, as does one of their children. The grave markers for Mr. and Mrs. Cessna only say ‘Father’ and ‘Mother.’ • Lemuel Cessna was born in Vermilion County, Illinois on November 6, 1867, and his future wife, Hattie Myers, was born there as well on February 28, 1871. They married in the place of their birth on February 25, 1891 and went on to have eight children together with every child living to adulthood. • Census records across the Cessna’s lives tell us that Lemuel spent many years working in farming, but his obituary tells us more. Mr. Cessna was a stockholder in a local canning factory in Rochester, IN, and he also served as a road supervisor for four years once in Rochester, which the family moved to around 1902. • Mr. Cessna was far too young when he died in my opinion. He was just 44 years old when he passed away from mortal life on June 1, 1912. Mrs. Hattie Cessna died February 13, 1946 at the age of 74. Five of their eight children rest in this same cemetery, but only one rests with their parents here in the family plot. • #ioofcemeteryrochester

Wroblewski(1883-1956) resting at Saint Joseph Polish Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. • John Joseph Wroblewski was born in Bronson, Michigan on May 8, 1883, one of ten children born to his parents who are Polish immigrants to the United States. His father provided for the family through farming. I don’t know if the family was still living in Michigan in 1890 as that census record was lost in a fire long ago, but the 1900 census shows the family here in St. Joseph County, IN. • John Wroblewski sought out a life in service to God, and he was ordained on June 21, 1912. We can see from his grave marker that he spent 25 years as the pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in New Carlisle, a small town in St. Joseph County, IN west of South Bend. He passed away at the age of 73 following an automobile accident near Michigan City, IN on September 30, 1956 and was interred beside his parents at Saint Joseph Cemetery. • #stjosephcemeterysouthbend
