I’m asked if I ever miss life before my children, or if I could ever do my life over, would I have chosen differently? Instantly my mind goes to moments where I might say yes. When it was just me to clean up after, or when I need complete silence, when there was no one to worry about besides myself or being able to rest when I am sick. But what good is all of those things if I were to still be who I was before? Lost in an implosive cycle of self destruction. What good is having all of those things if my heart never knew them? So no, I wouldn’t have chosen differently. In the story of my life, they are my favorite chapters, my end all be all. You have options in your birth and you might wanna get acquainted with them! 1. Not conversing with your partner. If you're the birther, you'll wanna make sure you are communicating you personal preferences so your partner feels informed and prepare to advocate for you. If you don't talk to each other, you might find out the hard way that you disagree on something. Best to hash this out before you enter your birth space. 2. Not being flexible. If no one has told you yet, I'll just say it. Birth is unpredictable! Yes make a birth plan so you know your options and how to answer questions when they arise but don't feel so attached to something that it brings you stress and trauma if it doesn't work out like you wanted. 3. Don't avoid it! Yes hope for the best. Yes manifest that birth you want. But don't leave your rose colored glasses on for too long. Massage is a big part of it, but it’s also about conscious parenting and overall family health including physical, emotional, and Spiritual. Environment, communication, and touch are the 3 main components to strengthening a family unit and bonding process for a lifetime. Touch is a baby’s first language and dialogue is the second. Both nurturing touch and compassionate communication are necessary for healthy development. The practice involves a combination of relaxing strokes, light kneading, and gentle squeezing. It is not only a way communicate with your baby but it also conveys affection and a sense of security. Parts of this kind of practice dates back to decades ago and can be found in many different cultures. Something I love about birth photography that is different from other types of photography is it’s true story telling nature. There is no posing or prompts, everything is 100% real and you as a photographer document and watch the story unfold. Every birth story can be so different and special in it’s own unique way. It is such a privilege and a blessing to show women what they are capable of by capturing moments of strength, warmth, love and new life entering this world. 🤱🏻💫

Another baby boy was born yesterday morning! Just a few hours past his due date. Much of his birth mirrored his big brothers! Mom was insanely calm throughout the whole experience. She taught me that rolling with the punches will suit you well. She listened to her body and was in control of her whole experience. Calm and quiet. Stoic even. Dad asked questions, offered suggestions and ultimately trusted his wife. Such a beautiful connection. So grateful to see this powerful event. Teaching has always been such a big part of who I am. I grew up with an amazing Mom who is a teacher and I even taught in special education myself for 5 years earlier in my career. How do your babies feel about the grass? She was not a fan of the feel and texture! Even refused to touch it with her hands! So interesting to see little ones develop their own preferences about the world. 🤗

I’ll put it this way…. My baby was born on Christmas Day but he wasn’t born at a hospital or supported by an OBGYN. My care from midwives at a birth center meant that spontaneous labor was my only option. No elective induction or schedule sections. There is a time and place for scheduled birth. However, I believe spontaneous labor should be prioritized. Holiday celebration is not a reason for urgency…. Mini sessions or full 1 hour sessions? Many parents come to minis with fussy babies or toddlers and say “this is why we can only do a mini session, there is no way we would last for a full session”. It’s easy to think that, but majority of the time your kiddo needs that time to warm up! Now am I saying they won’t fuss at all during the full session? No, they might. But we can pivot, have a quick snack, play a game (which results in beautiful images), or dance to music, and so on. This gives much more opportunities for me to capture a full on genuine smile of your babes MULTIPLE times throughout our session together! Tell me you don’t dream of having candid photos hanging up on your wall or to share with your friends and family! Whatever works best for you, works for me. If your little ones are old enough to understand you, it’s a good idea to prepare them for what’s to come before the session starts. Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior. A lot of families pick something fun to do — as a treat after the session — if their kiddos are good listeners. Like dinner at their favorite pizza place or an ice cream cone! It also helps if your kids’ bellies are full and they’ve had some good rest before the session. After you do your best to prepare them, give yourself (and them) some grace! I have a lot of experience working with kids, so if they’re “in a mood” or aren’t cooperating perfectly for some reason, rest assured that we’re not judging you (or them). I’ve seen it all and know how to get great photos no matter what! My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as it possibly can be for you and your family! This season of life feels long right now, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s short.
