Symptoms of Perinatal Psychosis (PP) can include: -Delusions or strange beliefs -Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there) -Feeling very irritated -Hyperactivity -Severe depression or flat affect -Decreased need for or inability to sleep -Paranoia and suspiciousness -Rapid mood swings -Difficulty communicating at times -The most significant risk factors for postpartum psychosis are a personal or family history of bipolar disorder, or a previous psychotic episode. Of the individuals who develop a Perinatal Psychosis (PP), research has suggested that there is approximately a 5% suicide rate and a 4% infanticide rate associated with the illness. This is because the individual experiencing psychosis is experiencing a break from reality. In her psychotic state, the delusions and beliefs make sense to her; they feel very real to her and are often religious. Immediate treatment for a woman going through psychosis is imperative. Welcoming a newborn into your family is an exhilarating experience, filled with moments of joy and wonder. But, it's no secret that those early days and nights can also be quite challenging, especially when it comes to establishing a consistent bedtime routine. A calming bedtime routine is not only beneficial for your newborn's well-being but can also contribute to a more restful night for the entire family. Newborns don’t have a developed circadian rhythm and will go to bed much later than an older baby. Most newborns go to sleep sometime between 8:30-9:30 pm and sleep for 11-12 hours (with several night feeds). A newborn’s day is broken into 12 hours of day and about 12 hours of night. If your little one goes to bed at night at 8:30 pm and wakes up at 6 am, it’s not time for them to start their day. Give them a feed and then allow them to go back to sleep for another 1.5-2 hours.
