After a pretty hefty journey, we arrived at our first stop: @ilalalodgevicfalls. More on this beautiful place in the next post.. The nice thing about #Zimbabwe is that whilst it’s a bit of a schlep to get there, there’s no jet lag to worry about as there’s only a two-hour timezone difference from the UK. So we checked in, threw on our cozzies & headed to the pool for a refreshing dip. From the pool you can hear the thunder & see the mist coming off the #VictoriaFalls just a stones throw away, leaving me ITCHING to head there to see them immediately. But we were saving that for the following morning. So, only one thing for it: an ice cold @zambezi_lager which will distract us nicely from the lure of the falls thank you very much. After we got dressed, we strolled to the fabulous local #Brewery @theriverbrewingco a short 5 minute stroll away. Well worth a visit & the fabulous Robert looked after us beautifully. Oh & they sell a spectacularly yummy #SauvignonBlanc so that’s me, settled right in! Feeling delighted with life after a delicious couple of hours, we ambled back to the hotel to be greeted with the most stunning sight: a herd of elephants, moseying through the hotel grounds to drink from the waterhole. Could not believe our eyes. We had to pinch ourselves. We must have stood stock still mesmerised for a good hour. (Until my old lady bladder filled with Zambezi lager & white wine protested & I had to ditch the nellies to seek a loo.) We departed Somalisa Expeditions after a relaxed breakfast, happily to see our first Southern Giraffe 🦒… we then headed to the @painted_dog_conservation centre, to learn about their work, and also met a student, whom introduced us to one of their captive dogs that was injured and could not be returned to the wild. The reality of the critical situation we find ourselves in with so many species is forever more alarming, whereby it is the international community that is funding most work, and from what I can see local governments are not accountable - and it’s local people that suffer most, and in turn the wildlife and the landscape, how bazaar is this? How is a shift possible? When we could with correct leadership be so successful, on all counts. 9/8/91 with Karen Heath White water rafting down the Zambezi - not for the faint hearted! We took on rapids 1-13 except for no.9 as it was too dangerous. Elias, our guide, did that one on his own. Even he encountered problems and got stuck on a rock. He climbed out of the boat, pushed it off and jumped back in. It was a great day, We were in a boat with 5 others, 3 of whom were very large rugby players. In order to ride the rapids effectively, we had to shift our weight inside the inflatable on Elias’ command. The idea was for the 3 rugby players to throw themselves to the front of the boat when we hit a large wave and for the rest of us to follow. On one occasion, Karen moved too early and found herself face down in the bottom of the boat, that was taking in water, with the 3 rugby players on top of her! Bonus! The rest of our boat were driving to Lusaka the next day and offered us a lift. Treated ourselves to dinner at the Ilala Lodge. A nice plush restaurant, we had cream of mushroom soup and a roll for starters, Karen had chicken stuffed with ham and cheese and creamed mushrooms and I had the crocodile Thermidor, washed down with a bottle of wine and followed by coffees, we didn’t have room for desserts! The bill came and it was $84. It suddenly dawned on me that this could be US dollars and not Z$ as US dollars were highly sought after and commonly used in certain establishments. I was getting rather worried as the exchange rate for US$ was nowhere near as good. It turned out to be Z$ and the meal had cost the equivalent of £14.11.
