Trauma is a brain, mind and body experience. 🧠For anyone who experienced trauma before the age of around 4, you will likely have little or no “memory” of the trauma because the brain doesn’t yet hold memories in narrative form. What happens is our body literally “stores” the trauma as a somatic memory in the body instead of an image in the brain. This is why as an adult you may smell a certain perfume and your body reacts as the somatic memory has been activated.🧠 This is why when we get triggered by a narcissist, it’s because they are triggering somatic memories from our childhood, taking us back to a painful time and our nervous system responds in a fight, flight or freeze response.❄ Our body is literally stuck in the past because we weren’t able to fully process the trauma as a child. This is why you need somatic therapy to heal from trauma and stop you from reacting to the narcissist in a heightened way. Otherwise, that stuck trauma raises things like muscle tension and shallow breathing.❤️🩹 Narcissistic abuse heightens that stuck trauma as you feel unsafe.
