‘The uniqueness of the subject doesn’t lie in consciousness… The unconscious distances us from consciousness, and it is through this distance that we are distinct as subjects. Subjects stick out from the natural world and from their culture because their unconscious never permits them simply to be what they are. The unconscious is how who we are subjectively exceeds what we are symbolically. The alienation that corresponds to our unconscious is irreducible to everything that influences us, unlike our conscious wishes. Subjects consciously will to be happy, but they unconsciously find satisfaction in undermining their conscious will. Satisfaction depends on preventing the achieving of happiness because finally achieving the happiness that the subject consciously seeks exposes that this happiness does not exist. Happiness cannot be a present state. Attaining one’s object reveals that this object is never the equivalent of what one desired. As a result, happiness can never be anything but the promise of future happiness. Unconscious desire works in conjunction with the conscious wish for happiness by undermining the possibility of its achievement, thereby preserving the dream of a happiness to come. The unconscious finds satisfaction in creating and sustaining alienation because there is no initial satisfying object. The subject discovers a satisfying object only through a loss that gives the subject something to desire. Rather than imagining desire as a natural phenomenon, we should see it as a structure that has to emerge out of the relationship between bodily needs and social demands. By undermining the conscious pursuit of happiness, unconscious desire keeps itself going by continually erecting an obstacle to the fulfillment of the wish. Trauma is a brain, mind and body experience. 🧠For anyone who experienced trauma before the age of around 4, you will likely have little or no “memory” of the trauma because the brain doesn’t yet hold memories in narrative form. What happens is our body literally “stores” the trauma as a somatic memory in the body instead of an image in the brain. This is why as an adult you may smell a certain perfume and your body reacts as the somatic memory has been activated.🧠 This is why when we get triggered by a narcissist, it’s because they are triggering somatic memories from our childhood, taking us back to a painful time and our nervous system responds in a fight, flight or freeze response.❄ Our body is literally stuck in the past because we weren’t able to fully process the trauma as a child. This is why you need somatic therapy to heal from trauma and stop you from reacting to the narcissist in a heightened way. Otherwise, that stuck trauma raises things like muscle tension and shallow breathing.❤️🩹 Narcissistic abuse heightens that stuck trauma as you feel unsafe. The body reacts in the present to a trigger as if you were right back in the past traumatic event and somatic therapy helps the brain finally timestamp the trauma into the past as opposed to still “feeling” present in your life.😥 Let me know in the comments if you THINK you have moved on but still FEEL triggered all the time. All is vanity.” -Ecclesiastes 1:2 Imagine one day, you wake up from your sleep to find two policemen standing in your room and they tell you that you’re under arrest. But don’t worry because this shouldn’t affect your life too much, you can really go about your day to day business as usual, yet you’re still under arrest for unknown, absurd reasons. This is what happened to Joseph K in this book; Kafka simply calls him K. In this book, we follow K’s journey from the beginning of his arrest through his arduous efforts to find out what he was accused of and how to escape the tangle of this trial, and then to his eventual fate. Spoiler alert: the story was not completed. But this open-ended story truly invites me to ponder not only K’s fate but also the fate of all people in his town However, Kafka effectively conveyed the absurdity of life, the frustrations inherent in society, and the potential for individuals to spiral into neurotic states due to seemingly minor twists of fate. K was reassured that his arrest was very serious but at the same time he was also told that his arrest won’t affect his life very much. While his trial was on the way, he was not told what his charge is and how he can contest. The ‘Strings that bind us’ was my first sale yesterday at the #encoreartshow2024. :-) It was sold to a wonderful person and found a good home! This piece is an abstract concept of the invisible connection strings between humans themselves, humans and places, humans and animals. Like an invisible web it is essential for survival and well-being. I became aware of that web and strings after the death of my first husband. With the initial shock, all the existing strings get burned by the intense pain, you don’t see them anymore, you’re too deep in grief. With time, you become aware of their existence as each and every one of them come to the light and become so very precious! Those strings of connection create the web of life that keeps you alive. Same when immigrating to a new country, you got zero local connections at first, zero points of reference. It feels like you were parachuted in an unknown land, you need to learn everything from the beginning and it takes a huge amount of energy, effort, and time. I find that it’s easier or more difficult in different types of city environments and climates. In places where there are small shops and where neighbourhoods are more tightly knit with small businesses, the process is easier and quicker. In places where there are very large impersonal malls and neighbourhoods are strictly residential it is much harder and it takes much longer. What do these ‘ these strings of connection’ look like? It’s the friendly face at the bakery that recognizes you and greets you, it’s the cafe where you become a regular and enjoy a good coffee, it’s the librarian, the friendly guy at your local Circle K, the people you get to meet by engaging in various activities in your new town, your new co-workers, the park where you go to recharge, the landmarks you begin to recognize, the feeling of safety when you’re able to find your way around.
