Ever have one of those days you’re so wrap up in the “now” of things but you feel a certain way….maybe emotional but then you realize it may have to do with it being an important personal “anniversary” day. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years with my spinal cord stimulator. I have had some ups and downs, it’s NOT a cure but it has helped me with my pain level. Maybe some 50% to 60% and that means less pain meds. I have also been able to accomplish some things I haven’t been able to do since before my on duty accident like……walk my pups @the_one_with_the_pups with my beautiful Beba @dresxnails. I’m still adapting and trying to learn how to balance my life with CRPS but I am grateful my awesome doctor, Dr Said at @ascendpainandwellness suggested the trial to see if this was something that could help. Three years ago today I was suddenly battery operated. I am wifi compatible, have an app on my iPhone that connects to my device and info about my health and heart are stored somewhere in the cloud. Although that’s a bit unsettling, I don’t have the luxury of just not using it because it makes sure I have a normal heart rate. When I arrived at the cardiac unit it ranged between 20-40 beats per minute, due to complete heart block, and the second photo of the game plan ensured it would be a more normal range of 40-70bpm. I am so very grateful to my cardiac team. They were both brilliant and kind. Yet, if I’m honest, I still find the whole situation a bit unsettling. There’s a whole scene where she recites les parties de la main, and it has made me giggle for decades, (as well as helped me pass French,) and I can’t help but recite it to myself as I work on Baymax’s hands. Today’s photo set focuses on one of the toughest parts of a figure, the hands - the first time I tried to make fingers without an interior armature, they were a mess! They wouldn’t hold together and they wouldn’t affix to the hand the way I wanted and they certainly didn’t look very good. Baymax’s fingers are very plump and distinct from his hands; unlike most extended digits, they don’t flow smoothly into the hand, they’re almost like Boston Mechanics’ phalange pads. So, I’m adapting a digit method I learned from Sara Renzulli at Sarafina Fiber Art! For her Witch figure, she wraps the digits in wool while off the appendage, then wraps them down onto the palm as she wraps the limb. Since Baymax doesn’t have human fingers I’m changing that process up a bit by adding in some of her other techniques - first I wrap the wire in wool and fold it to pinch the wool in place. Next, I wrap the wool laterally, keeping it as tight as possible and doing my best to keep the pill-like shape in trim. Once all four digits are done, I anchor them into the palm loop and wrap their remaining wires up the limb and around/under the pipe cleaner. After the magnets are wired in, basic armature 101 continues with a layer of pipe cleaners wrapped down for wool grip, and then the first wool layer goes on. In order to keep Baymax as flexible and posable as possible, I minimized the wool wrapping on the major joints as much as I could. I had to take a couple minutes and think out how to cover his feet first, and test it before I kept going. Breaking “new” ground in magnetic armature technology for needlefelting means testing at every stage to make sure the wool layer is staying thin enough to allow the magnetic field enough room to function properly but thick enough to hide his understructure. I always try to remind myself to constantly check back to my notes and diagrams, just to make sure I’m keeping things on track... and I’m getting better at actually doing it! Let’s learn from my mistakes! Honesty time: this is actually the second attempt at creating Baymax. You’re getting the benefit of my first figure failure, which I definitely borked up in a lot of unique ways. The first attempt didn’t have nearly as much prep work; in fact it would be fair to say it didn’t even have a tenth as much prep work, and it really showed in every stage I worked and reworked and reworked again. I got a little too big for my britches, you see, and thought this character was simple and easy and that I could freehand this build without much preplanning. Nope! I wasted far too much time and materials trying to make something work that was wrong from the start, and if I’d taken the time to think it out beforehand I wouldn’t have even started where I did. So, for attempt #2, I took a far more academic approach and properly did my research and prep work, and truly I’m more comfortable doing it this way. Every failure is a learning experience! Good day sunshine! Here we go, time to get busy and get to making! Today’s photo set is focusing on building the armature, and my weird solution to difficult feet: MAGNETS! Not only does he have a body shape that overhangs his standing footprint quite a bit and offsets his center of gravity, Baymax’s no-kneed legs end in a “foot” that resembles an elephant’s foot, i.e. without a heel and arch to allow for easy bipedal balance. Faced with these two issues, I wracked my brain for any way to make Baymax’s feet that would allow him to stand up on his own without assistance. Enter the neodymium magnets! (Not really a big stretch for me, as I use magnets in costuming/prop work quite often.) Little update - apologies I’ve been quiet uploading. I haven’t wanted to much as I feel it’s a year of such mixed emotions of too many highs and lows. I know people have so many thoughts and opinions about this year and I don’t think there is a right or a wrong way to feel and each day feels different. Truthfully some days are really tough, I have definitely noticed a huge increase in my anxiety and motivation, equally I feel I’ve learnt and am still learning things about myself during this time, which is a good thing! A couple weeks ago I was really run down and basically bed ridden for 10 days, it never gets easier and it’s very disheartening when my body decides it needs rest. It really knocks me and it took me a good two weeks to walk around the block again! I had a phone call consultation with a rheumatologist which had been a year long wait, given my medical history plus my families, she thinks it sounds like chronic fatigue syndrome. To be honest it’s something that has been spoke about a few times by various medical professionals so hasn’t come as a shock. Today I headed to the hospital for my pacemaker check up, it’s been 8 months since I had my implant fitted. Given this year it’s actually gone surprisingly quick but equally feels like i’ve always had it in a strange way. I’ve had 6 face to face medical consultations/tests since lockdown and they don’t get easier, it physically and mentally drains me! It feels like i’m exposing myself when I’ve been home so much trying to be safe and let this insane tidal wave calm. Last week I was due in London for routine tests and a consultation, the tests were postponed and I had a phone call instead. I’ve had a couple phone call consultations now and I think they will be become more perminant in the future. Going forward until the new year I probably will continue being quiet with an upload here or there, but I am always available on direct messager if you want someone to talk to 😊 it’s great connecting with so many of you and being support for one another, it needs to continue going forward. I hope you’re all keeping safe 😊
