Jasmine McKay, MD loading…💕🩺 After numerous medical school applications, several interviews and multiple acceptances, I am elated to announce that I will be pursuing my M.D. at the ILLUSTRIOUS Howard University College of Medicine! 🦬 For those of you who know me personally, you have seen first hand the sheer willpower and determination that has been coursing through my veins since as long as I can remember. It was never a matter of if I would become a doctor; it was when! All in God’s timing, my tireless ambition pushed me through this application cycle successfully and opened the doors for me to begin the first step to the rest of my career. To become not only a first-generation college graduate in my family, but also the first person in my family to become a physician is a HUGE blessing and honor. Thank you to my family, friends and mentors along the way who have given me the support, encouragement and resources necessary to make my dream a reality. ❤️ & did i mention i’m on scholarship? #medicalschool #medschool #blackdoctors #firstgen #firstgeneration #medicalschooljourney #medschooljourney #futurephysician #futuredoctor #futureblackdoctor #futureblackphysician #medicine #blackwomeninmedicine #med #incomingms1 #incomingms #hucmclassof2028 #incomingmedicalstudent #incomingmedstudent #hucm #hucmco2028 #hucm2028 #howard #howarduniversity #howardu #howarduniversitycollegeofmedicine #blackpremed #blackpremedicalstudent

Resource Regrets So this one isn’t really “regrets” per se. Just thoughts, that, since I only did this once, I don’t have too much evidence for what’s really BEST, you know? And, at the end of the day, we all learn a little bit different, so it’s important to explore and do what works with you. I’ll split this up into 3 categories, life savers, helpful, meh/didn’t use. 🥰Life Savers 🥰AMBOSS- I basically used this everyday, and still do. It’s literally the Google for med school. Like instead of googling what you’re looking for and not being sure how relevant that info is, AMBOSS gives you EXACTLY what you need. The qbank is also really nice to have, although not as step like as uworld. 🥰UWORLD- my school had us not use this till second year. In retrospect I’m not sure how I feel about this, and part of me definitely thinks I would have liked to have it first year as well. Now we all know uworld is the gold standard so I won’t hype on that. 🥰FIRST AID- like AMBOSS on paper but even more condensed. I like using FA to take all my notes in, like when I’m doing qbank if I learn something new, I’ll go to FA see if it’s in there, and if it’s not I’ll write that tidbit in there. These 3 are pretty much what I am using to step study rn, however I recently added on a Kaplan Resource that I’ll tell you guys about when I use it some more. 🐣Helpful 🐣Anki- I am not an anki king. Some people are. I think if you figure out really good settings for anki and keep up with it can be helpful. But I always felt like when I was doing anki I was picking my lazy choice if that makes sense. I still use it for micro, biochem, and immuno but that’s pretty much it. 🐣 Boards and Beyond: helpful when you’re learning the material. So far for step study I really haven’t gone back to it too much. 🐣 Youtube/ninja nerd- god bless the internet. 🥵Meh/Didn’t use 🥵Lecture material- most the time never even looked at 🥵USMLE RX- I know a lot of people like this, but I just didn’t feel the need to add on another resource. Other med students, what are your thoughts on resources for the first 2 years? And upperclassman, what are your go to’s for clinical years?

Glory to God 🙌 In February, I received the news that I was ACCEPTED into medical school!!!!! 😭 FINALLY!! I took these past 2 months to appreciate this blessing, tell my family, friends, LOR writers, & close people in my support system 🫶 Now I'm sharing the news with my you all, my insta friends & inspiration!! Los quiero 💖 After many months & many secondaries later, a medical school gave me a chance & said YES!! 🥳 Even more, the school is a perfect fit for what I want to do with my career. I am still waiting to hear from 1 more school & another opportunity that is very tempting. So I don't know where I'll be just yet but for now, it is so nice to know that all the effort I have put into my application has finally paid off. All the gap years doing a post-bacc, getting clinical experience, and taking the mcat (more than once 😫) have been worth it. It is so reassuring that at least someone was able to see the potential in me and give me a chance. Everything I have accomplished has been because of God. He has given me the strength & knowledge to get through these premed years. So, to Him be the glory 🙌 🏷: #premed #incomingms1 #futuradoctora #latinapremed #accepted #medschoolacceptance #latinaenmedicina

Dear Incoming/New Medical Student, Welcome, and congratulations! I know this has been a dream of yours, probably for a very long time. I know you can hardly believe you’re here, that your first white coat is around the corner, your first patient, your first OSCE, and your first med school exam. And that’s not even half of the firsts you’ll experience this year. You’re nervous and excited. I know :) I’ve been there too. There’s so much that I want to tell you. But we’ll just have to start here. I know you’re worried about finding friends, about fitting in. Don’t worry about that first block too much. The friendships ebb and flow for a bit. Hang out when you can, but figure out how to study too! Talk to your upperclassman, they’ve been where you are, and they have a lot to offer. The information, that metaphor about the fire hose coming at your face? Yeah… it’s true haha. But you can handle it :) You’ll be amazed at how much you’re gonna grow this year. There will always be a voice in your head whispering- you can still do more. You should do more - And I want you to know, you shouldn’t always listen to that voice. It’s going to try and convince you that 30 more minutes of studying is more important than your physical health and going to the gym. It’s going to try and tell you that staying up till 5am is going to give you an edge, and that somehow you’ll avoid the pitfalls of sleep loss. Don’t listen. Your physical, mental, and spiritual well being has to trump everything. It has to. This is still not a sprint. It’s still a marathon. The goal isn’t to make it past your first exam, the goal is to make it to that long white coat, and then to your patients, every. single. day. So do what you can to take care of yourself, to hang onto the things you love. (Which, btw, your residency interviewer will probably care more about talking about your love for fostering dogs, than talking about your test scores) I’m proud of you. You made it here for a reason. Yes, you belong here. Yes, it will be hard. Yes, you can do this. Here’s to you, class of 2026. Love, Your med school big sis P.s, don’t worry, this won’t be your only letter! I’ll check back in later :)

She’s a 10 but she’s only available after the daily thousand anki. What I’m thinking about M2 starting: Indulging myself on these last few days of vacation… I’m scared about how much I’ve learned during M1 and how much I’m supposed to keep learning, how I’m supposed to focus on block exam material while prepping for STEP. I’m excited about more standardized patients during OSCE and the idea of having to come up with a diagnoses on my own. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve changed in the last year! I think if I met me pre-block 1- I would literally not even recognize that girl. She was constantly anxious. She ONLY lived in the future. She put her career above EVERYTHING else. To each their own, but I like the new me better. I’m ready for the growth of this new year. I’m ready for UWORLD to beat the 💩 out of me. I’m ready for M2.

GIVEAWAY & why I think @medschoolbootcamp is the future of med school resources TO ENTER to win a 1 year of Med School BootCamp Plus Subscription: 1. Follow me and @medschoolbootcamp 2. Tag a friend. (Each tag is one entry) 3. Comment what specialty you think you’ll be in! 4. BONUS: +3 when you share to story and tag both accounts, must stay up for 24 hours. If you can’t wait, use code “studylife30” for 30% off now! This is my fully honest review: There are many resource brands that try to reach out to me that I don’t end up working with. 1. Because I’m stuck in my ways with the other resources I use, and it works 2. I just don’t think they’re that great It’s takes something special for me to actually integrate it into my study plans especially all the way into my final block of M1. Here’s why I love @medschoolbootcamp and why I will definitely be using to study for school exams and step 1. ✅the videos are better, just a tad more in depth, which is great for the people who don’t want to go to lecture. And I like seeing the speakers face haha.. .. ✅first order questions between and after video modules that keep you engaged instead of just clicking through videos. ✅the questions you missed get presented to you as a warm up the next day, which is great for spaced repetition and seeing what you hang onto. ✅ there are ALSO board style questions, with thorough explanations. ✅it’s also helpful if your school doesn’t do path M1, because you can easily skip that module, wheras in BB a lot of times it’s in the same video and in the qbank, and the qbank only has like 2-5 questions usually per video. And they’re all third order Right now most people switch between a bunch of resources. And have to buy a bunch of resources. @medschoolbootcamp is a great all in one, and the anking deck still lines up really well. I would love for y’all to try it and let me know what YOU think!

𝐀𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 ✨ ⁣ ⁣ Don’t get me started on how much I don’t like Aurora, if you watch my stories you know the sketchy “incident” that made me sooo over it 😅 ⁣ ⁣ Also, don’t let me scare you for those applying this cycle and wondering if that means you should visit every school first. CU is a great school and was my top choice along with Wake out of the EIGHT other options I had! As much as I’d love to be soaking in the small town vibes of Winston-Salem, I’M SERIOUSLY SO HUMBLED to have received a full ride to such a great school and my top choice! 🥺 Still wondering if they called me on accident¿ haha jk (kinda) but the location has nothing to do with how I view the school at ALL!⁣ ⁣ So here’s the fun adventures (outside of Aurora 😉) we’ve had so far: ⁣ ⁣ 🏔 Hiked in Estes park with my mom (who luckily I didn’t make throw up this time like the hike I took her to in San Diego that turned out to be a tad too intense 😅) ⁣ ⁣ 🐏 Drove through Rocky Mountain National Park and saw rams cross the street which we thought was the coolest thing ever! ⁣ ⁣ 🍷 Went to literally the coolest winery I’ve ever been to. The OWNER was the one pouring our wines for the tasting and the wife gave us a tour. Also, the tasting included 20 different wines, how crazy! ⁣ ⁣ 🐴 I GOT TO RIDE AGAIN♥️♥️♥️ the horse I rode was drop dead gorgeous. That was the 2nd barn I tried and the 1st ended up being a perfect fit and I’m going to start riding once a week now!! ⁣ ⁣ 🧗🏽‍♀️ K I swear I made it to the top of this one before the video was taken, but this one was at the end and my arms were DEAD. SO much fun though! (And even though my arms barely lasted an hour haha) ⁣ ⁣ 🏋🏽‍♀️ (not pictured) Did a CrossFit workout for the first time a bajillion years and complained for 72 hours straight afterwards abut how sore I was 🤣 we’re trying out another gym today! ⁣ ⁣ ⚾️ Went to a Rocky’s game yesterday. Also not pictured and I totally called it despite saying we would *definitely* get one this time!🤦🏽‍♀️ ha oh well, we still had a blast! ⁣ ✔️ That’s all for now but SO much more to come! #premedicalstudent #incomingms1

I’ve learned so much over many years and want to share the knowledge I’ve gain as a pre-med student and now, soon to be, a medical student. I hope that by documenting my journey to the MD (In Sha Allah), I can help and inspire other first-generation students, West African-American students, Black students, Muslim students, female students (or anyone at all who wants to be a physician) to achieve this goal! ❤️❤️ Follow me and stay tuned for which medical school I will attend for the next 4 years! 📚 #medicine #medstudent #blackmedstudent #medschool #incomingMS1

Applying to medical school while still studying for your MCAT✨🕊 things to remember: - u don’t have to submit ur app the day it opens - it takes 6-8 weeks for ur information to get verified so if u want to submit ur app to a throwaways school just to get everything verified, do it & then add schools in later! - don’t submit ur apps till u get ur score back (they will put u in a pile that will only be read until november) it’s better to be a few weeks late than to risk being evaluated till nov (speaking from personal experience) - ur main focus should be on doing well on ur test. BUT a little writing each day, even 15 min, goes a long way! Last year, my MCAT was cancelled 3 times because of covid, forcing me to take it in july and get my results in august. while i was frustrated that i didn’t submit my primary apps on may 27, the extra time gave me a chance to improve my test score and really focus. there’s always a silver lining and we just have to be patient. in the end, med schools are constantly evaluating apps. i even got interview invites in march. so just take a deep breath and know ur not “late”- ur exactly on the path u need to be 💚🍀🍃🦖🐛🥑🥝🧩

AMCAS Work & Activities Dos and Don’ts! Thank u to all of u who have trusted me to edit your beautiful words. I’ve learned a few things from reading your applications that I feel are important moving forward in the application cycle. ✨🕊 DONTs: ❌focus too much on the details of a story. I’ve seen many waste characters on describing the scene without giving much context or explanation of its relevance. ❌try to force a personalized story in 700 characters (save those for the most meaningful ones bc u get more characters!) ❌forget to explain your role and the organization. even if u think it’s a well-known org, ur reader might have no idea what ur talking about. don’t make assumptions and make the reader have to look anything up! ❌write the same way you speak! this is HUGE. there is a certain level of professionalism that your application should exude. you are not chatting with ur bff- remember, you have to sell urself while remaining true to who u are. ❌put shadowing as ur most meaningful experience. this is a passive role and usually highlights the physician, not u. DOs: ✅use the first sentence to explain the org/ur specific role. ✅explain how that experience helped u grow/ what skills it gave u ✅state how that skill set will help u as a physician ✅pick experiences for ur “most meaningful” where u had a leadership role or were an active participant. u want to show how u take initiative. ✅have a second set of eyes read over ur answers- they can see something u missed. it’s been so fun reading all ur responses! if u want me to edit ur work, just click the link in my bio and i’d be more than happy to help. so proud of all of u future doctors! 🥳🌼✨🌞🥺💛🌟🌻 #medschooladvice #medschoolapplications #medicalschooltips #medschoolmotivation #premedtips #medschoolapplicant #workandactivities #amcas #personalstatement #applicationtips #appediting #medgram #studygram #incomingMS1 #ststionaraddict #wellness #femaledoctor

One question I'm asked all the time is: How can I be proactive/make the most of my time as a [insert class year] pre med student? 🤔 Today, I'm announcing a month long series that will answer that question and hopefully save a few of you some trouble along the way! It's titled, "The Pre-Med Path: Explained". Beginning tomorrow, I will be dedicating each week of the month to a specific pre-med year, freshman through senior years. I will be sharing key things to focus on, common pitfalls and how to avoid them, how to make your path unique, methods for being proactive and securing great opportunities every step of the way, and so much more! Today, my landlords and I showed my apartment to 4 potential new tenants. A bittersweet day for me. My leopard couch and I (and little Gander) will be moving to Tallahassee, FL in 2 short months. Time to put on my big girl panties and stop whining, I know. But change is tough. Wish me luck! . . #woodsedgesouth #WES #gainesvilletotallahassee #farewellgators #helloseminoles #switchingsides #sadtoleave #incomingMS1

From taking the MCAT a little over a year ago to receiving my official acceptance letter! Alhamdulillah every step of the way. I spent the last few weeks sending emails and text messages to very special individuals who are very dear to me. It took a while to get to almost everyone due to a little trip to the emergency room and my busy work schedule. These wonderful people helped me through this journey at zero cost and for that, I will always be grateful! You will all forever be in my dua!! (In Shaa Allah)🤗😘 @novakandi @iffath.ara @isrataudry @saimii.r @syeda_m @zehramiss @ashabzi @fatima_das97 @fatimat_bint_zarah @amakk92 @sadia6279 PS: some are not on Instagram! #alhamdulillah #accepted #incomingms1 #MCAT #medschool #medschoolapplicant #interviewseason

I've been falling into my old habits as I started thinking about this time last year (as one does). Around this time last year, I was rejected by almost every medical school I applied to and I was devastated. I didn't know what to do with my life. But, I knew that I didn't want to give up. So, I decided to apply again and began gearing up for another gap year. Was it all uphill from there? No. Did I doubt myself or my decision to keep trying? Oh yes. But, standing on the other side of this hurdle, I think I'm qualified enough to give some advice: TRUST THE PROCESS. These obstacles show up so that you can decide how much you really want that thing you've been working for. And they're here to show you who will stand by your side when the situation gets tough. Personally, I was once again reminded that things will find a way of working themselves out, as long as you don't stop putting work into them. -Bhav #DOctortobe #incomingms1 #omstobe #medblogger #medgram #igblogger #oms1 #igblog #premed #premedblogger #studyspiration #studyspo #womeninmedicine #medspo #medblog #medschool
