Calosoma inquisitor (Linnaeus, 1758) This is a rather rare ground beetle, and a rather rare color variation as well, they are usually copper and greenish in color, but this one was black and blue, quite the beautiful specimen. The red list for Germany lists this species as „rare“ and „endangered“. These guys are also called „caterpillar-hunters“ as lepidoptera larvae are a large part of their diet. Woodland Dor Beetle (Anoplorrupes stercorosus, 🇩🇪 Waldmistkäfer) Found several of these shiny beetles while hiking on Medvendica, a mountain in the north of Zagreb 🇭🇷 a few weeks back. They usually feed on dung, fungi and rotting plant material, which they also use to fill brood chambers into which females lay their eggs after mating in spring. Interestingly, almost all individuals that we found were dead (we came across at least 10 individuals), only one single one was flying around (and posed for the shots). Not sure if that is part of the normal life cycle, or if there are any other causes (similar to recently posted cockchafers). Anthocharis cardamines (Linnaeus, 1758) Massive swiper for today! All of winter I was anxiously waiting for the butterflies to return and here they finally are. This is a rather common species, though, not any less beautiful. The images show two different individuals, we found both during the night after some very bad weather. It’s incredible how these animals can withstand rain and hail even though they sleep right at the top of the vegetation. The portraits are stacks of about 80-90 images using the MC20 teleconverter on the OM 90mm, the lateral photo is a handheld focus stack of a couple of images, maybe 20. Rilaena triangularis (Herbst, 1799) I believe this was one of the first harvestman species I photographed with my first macro lens. Two and a half years later and the difference is night and day, hard to believe how much of a difference it is, back then I didn’t even know photos like this were possible of live animals. Paper wasp (Genus: Ropalidia) on its nest. Paper wasps build nests by mixing plant fibre and their saliva. The genus Ropalidia are known to be eusocial. This genus contains two types of species, where new colonies are formed by a single individual or groups. A rather spontaneous post for #flyfriday today. Yesterday, after it stopped raining and hailing i found a ton of these flies sitting completely still and I thought this might be my only chance for a photo like this. This was shot at 4x magnification, and since this species is just so extremely dark, I had to use a very low framerate of 2 images per second to get to a rather high flash strength. It’s far from perfect, but given how small their heads are I think it’s quite impressive still. Misumena vatia (Clerck, 1757) for #thomisidthursday It seems like this species has just popped up out of nowhere again, from one day to another they were all back, and quite a few larger specimen as well. This was the first time I took a photo of this species using the teleconverter, it’s a stack of about 123 images at 4x magnification and I think it turned out really nicely, quite a lot of detail that I couldn’t have gotten at 2x. I also tried taking a portrait of the male of this species, they are quite unique looking, but I didn’t find a patient subject. Due to its life cycle which includes 3 larval stages that develop over a course of 3-4 years, the cockchafer usually appears in intervals. For example, in some parts of Austria 🇦🇹 and in Bavaria 🇩🇪, larger numbers of cockchafers were observed in 2018 and 2021, so it is not surprising that we are seeing lots of cockchafers again this year. Unfortunately, most of those I came across these days were dead cockchafers lying on the street - unsure yet why this is happening, but apparently, hitting a window in flight is usually enough for them to fall and die. I was even approached by my parents recently, who've notices some (half-alive) cockchafers in Croatia. Longhorn Beetle (Aegomorphus circumflexus) I absolutely love photographing Longhorn Beetles, they are have such amazing features and always make for fascinating portraits. Over 35 000 species are described in the Cerambycidae family including some truly iconic beetles like the Harlequin Beetle and also containing the only know venomous Beetle. Certain species are also known to be efficient pollinators attending generalist and specialist systems, some orchid species are highly reliant on Longhorns for their pollination.
