Good morning. First photo snapdragons I planted out about 10 days ago (second photo snapdragons last summer) I sowed the tiny seeds last October, they slowly grow over the winter and spring months. When they’re tall enough I pinch out the growing tip to create bushier, multi stemmed plants. I plant them close together to try and encourage them to grow tall (fighting for light) and to help prop each other up, although they’ll still need some plant supports. We are asked so many questions about our sedum roof which covers the humble 15m2 of our extension. . I was up there today just to check how well established it was. I pulled a few weeds out, fed it and gave it a good watering. . It looks great, there are definitely some areas that have slightly better coverage, but I am guessing this is down to how much sunlight we get, through the day and some of it is pretty shaded. . It reminded me of last year when the roof was a haven for the bees! 🐝 . 1-3: the roof today (excuse the footprints) 4: the bees June 2023 5: 4 weeks after install 6: install day 4th May 2023 7: Mabel inspecting the trays of sedum. . You can see that in just under a year since being installed by @nestscotland as the final part of our build, how well established it has become, can’t wait for the summer to see how it changes! . I really love how it is a little ecosystem, also saving a little bit of surface water going into the sewage system and provides a little bit of interest to look at too. The wiff of hyacinths a bit too over powering (given I’m not a fan) 🤣 Great to see them using containerised plants that can live on rather than oasis and cut flowers. Time for NOT mowing the lawn again, as @plantlife.loveplants’ No Mow May is around the corner! 🌱🦋🐝 As a reminder, here’s the article our very own Paul and Loulou wrote a couple of years ago: No Mow May gives a boost to flowers and insects (and hence birds and other animals that feed on them) at the start of the season, when food demands are increasing but supply can be limited. It can therefore help wildlife out at what could otherwise be a difficult time. However, those demands don’t simply cease at the end of May and cutting the lawn short for the rest of the summer can undo some of the good. So, why not build on No Mow May and have a rough plan for the whole year - leaving some parts to grow long, others to only mow once a month, whilst keeping some short areas for recreation? And leaving a few corners through the winter will help wildlife survive until it’s time for No Mow May next year! Rotating areas from year to year may also help maintain good growth throughout your lawn. J - what’s one of the hardest things for me as a very very beginner beekeeper? The smoker! Because we aren’t going into the hive all the time, we don’t need to use the smoker unless we are performing a hive, hive beetle or varroa mite check. It is sometimes so annoying to get the smoker properly smoking and ensuring that it is cool enough to use on the bees! It is something that I feel will get better and more used to the more times we use it. Already we are noticing that if we use the paperbark off our paperbark tree in our yard that it is a better fuel/smoking source than anything else we have tried yet!

Douglas Meadowfoam🐝 - My FAVORITE self seeding annual native plant! Also called the Poached Egg Plant because of its coloration (🍳), Douglas Meadowfoam is perfect for a native pollinator garden! As a self sending annual, leave the plant as is after flowering and it will set seeds in your yard for next year. Bees go CRAZY over this plant and I think it is just the cutest flower ever!🌼 - The pollinator berm in the last slide has Douglas Meadowfoam, checkermallow sp., Rosy Plectritis, Collinsia grandiflora, Camas sp. and a large Western Azalea in the back! All of these species bloom around the same time and can be found growing together in natural spaces in the PNW. A male Orange-tailed Mining Bee having a relaxing weekend on blossom 🌸 Mid to late April is a great time to get familiar with the different mining bees that are active, with Orange-tailed Mining Bees being one of a few commoner species to find on tree blossom. Males often start emerging a bit earlier than the females as they scope out available habitats and patrol the best flowery areas before the females emerge. We are delighted to announce we are now the proud owner of a White & Sons hive, which is carefully looked after by @beesand.co Through their breeding and reintroduction program they are playing an active part in helping to prevent the decline of the native British honeybee, while their award-winning, raw, 100% British honey, helps showcase the health and taste benefits of true artisan honey.
