New video is up! Took a quick trip on Saturday to the opening day of Kennywood Park for the 2024 season! There’s a lot to talk about. Let’s start with the elephant in the room - the Steel Curtain. As we know, the Steel Curtain is closed all season but that also extends to Steelers Country and didn’t have to. There’s also some new things to visit like the Carousel Burger Company, Jeeter’s Pub and some brand new food additions to the park. We also discuss the issue with closing rides and not replacing them because that becomes a much larger issue when other rides unexpectedly close. I had a good conversation about this piece at the Squirrel Hill Night Market last weekend. Its a conversation that I have frequently when people ask why I don't have any drawings of the skyline. Im not going to rehash the same lecture on why, but this drawing is the best example. What are you most drawn to when looking at this piece ? The city or the kids playing baseball ? So, lately, I've been facing some issues, and every time I go over it in my head it all comes down to help. I need help. After Dark has grown too big for just one Dannal, to do. Even loading my car I'm finding out that I can't bring it all with me anymore. So from now on I'll be working on making a "contract board" similar to my rumors board. This will allow people who want to make a quick easy buck, to sign up and take jobs to help the buisness grow. It's sort of sad but also exciting, knowing that over a span of 1 year my buisness had made such a significant jump. Drawing alone in a big empty school reminds me of all those years of drawing alone in the studios. It's almost giving me PTSD because those were some of my darkest moments that took years to work through. Being alone in the dark sometimes gives me a claustrophobic response, and other times, I find it the most peaceful. Never a happy medium. Sometimes, I'm afraid I've changed so much that I can't find myself in the world of the After Dark, and will someday lose interest. Then, other nights.. It's hard to believe it's over. One thing I struggle with after such an incredible weekend is going back into my usual life. The day job and re organizing my booth displays. After 7 months of preparing and drowning in incredible amounts of stress, I have to stay it was all worth it. I never can figure out the words to describe my gratitude. What is your favorite Kennywood ride ?? I think mines the Exterminator or the skyrocket. The Racers are definitely close second becuase it was one of my ealiest memories of Kennywood. But the Exterminator is fun because I like free spinning in the dark, then I also enjoy how fast the skyrocket launches you up the first hill. First shot of a flat ride I've posted, but here goes. Here's a shot of Kangaroo (with that pile of trash Steel Curtain in the background) Anyway: Kennywood Round 1, my Takeaways -One Train Ops was the story of the day. Phantom, SC, Thunderbolt, and Sky Rocket were all running only one train. Fix it, Palace Entertainment. -Phantom was just as good as ever, managed two rides on it. Words cannot express how much I love Phantom's Revenge, the intensity, the speed, the airtime, the pacing, it's the closest thing to a perfect coaster I can think of. If it was only 1000 feet longer, then it would blow past SteVe for #1 Overall. -Thunderbolt and Jack Rabbit were both running GREAT. Kudos to Kennywood's maintenance team for keeping these classics in good shape. Smooth, good laterals (good enough for @gravitygroupie to squish me like a bug on Thunderbolt) and...hoo boy Jack Rabbit's double down. The most unsafe feeling element on any coaster...I love it. -Steel Curtain was just as awful as I remember it. Rough, boring, forceless, a TOTAL snoozer from Lift to Brakes. Still at the bottom and not moving anywhere. Go ride Phantom instead -Skipped Sky Rocket, Racer, and Exterminator due to time, it felt like everyone in Western PA, Northern WV, and Southeast OH were all there today. Everything had a 30+ minute wait. SC and Phantom both had hour + waits. All in all, a solid day at Kennywood, even with the one train ops on most coasters and how crowded it was. Here's the Kennywood Kangaroo! Looking all festive for the holiday season. Kennywood's Holiday Lights displays are always a treat, and there's something to be said about riding the rides when it's near freezing - especially the Jack Rabbit coaster, which was actually open this weekend, and boy was it cold! The Kangaroo is one of the most iconic rides at Kennywood, originally purchased in 1962 and now the last operating Norman Bartlett "Flying Coaster" operating in the world. Obviously not a coaster, the flat ride saw its first prototype built in 1958 and the first one to operate was at the Florida State Fair in 1959. By 1962 there were over 60 of them in operation, many of them up here in the northeast in the parks within striking distance of Kennywood - Cedar Point, Conneaut, Waldameer, Wildwood, Coney Island, and Crystal Beach all had them, along with plenty of others. A bit hard to see in this photo, but if you’re not familiar with the ride, there’s a ramp in the back left that actually launches the cars into the air, and they float gradually down around the circular track on individual hydraulic arms. It’s terrific fun. Pittsburghers in general are aggressive defenders of all the assorted unusual, quirky old stuff in the city, so when the Kangaroo was actually removed for a season, this decision was met with a riotous backlash and a petition amassing over 20,000 signatures to bring it back. So now it's back, and frankly looking better than ever, although its central inverted cone of neon light poles seems to be gone for good. But I think it's safe to say that the Kangaroo, with its fresh new retro-chic look will be boinging into the hearts of families at Kennywood for many more decades to come. 🦘
