Many would agree that Kiftsgate is a nod to Hidcote, particularly the upper part. Yet, I found the atmosphere distinctly different for places only half a mile apart. For one, Kiftsgate is quite literally perched on a steep hill overlooking the fields before Mickleton and beyond. The planting in the lower garden sets it apart. Spreading Monterey pines and a scented understory of tender shrubs evoke a vaguely northwestern Mediterranean feel. From the swimming pool, looking back at the house, a male Trachycarpus fortunei is framed among the pines, a focal point. It was surreal to expect the sound of crashing waves and instead hear the bleating chorus of sheep flocks, dispersed in the landscape like sprays of foam on a wide green sea. #cotswolds #kiftsgatecourtgarden

Thrilled to have Anne Chambers from Kiftgate Court Gardens with us on 14 June 2024. She will be in conversation with Vanessa Berridge, launch editor of The English Garden. Kiftsgate Court has been gardened by three generations of women gardeners. The gardens were laid out in the 1920s by Heather Muir, an instinctive plantswoman and garden designer, who turned a bare and challenging hill-top site into one of Britain’s loveliest gardens. In turn, her daughter, Diany Binny, and then Diany’s daughter, Anne Chambers took over the garden. Anne will be discussing Kiftsgate’s creation and her contribution to the gardens’ development as highlighted in Vanessa’s award winning book published to celebrate the centenary of the garden in 2019. They are a charity dedicated to conserving our horticultural heritage and keeping garden-worthy plants surviving To celebrate this milestone we’ve selected a few of our favourite cultivated plants that have a garden history connection… 🌹Miss Willmott’s rose: introduced in 1904 and named after horticulturist and garden designer Ellen Willmott. This rose is one of many plants named after Willmott or her residence Warley Place. 🌳 Audley End Oak: one of only two found in the UK. This rare hybrid dates to the late 18th century and is semi-evergreen with larger leaves than more common oaks. You can still see one in the gardens at Audley End today! 🌹 Kiftsgate Rose: a rose known for its size and huge flower clusters, this cultivated plant was first noticed at Kiftsgate Court in Gloucestershire. 17th May - More of Kiftsgate Court Garden in the Cotswolds, our luncheon venue & garden choice in the afternoon after visiting Hidcote Gardens. I love the way this garden is planted down the fairly steep slope along pathways that wind across from two sets of stairs at either end, past a loggia in the middle on a broader terrace & descent to a wide swathe of lawn surrounding a spherical pool in the centre ending in a ha ha, allowing the visitor a fine view out over the countryside.
