Lone Fell pony on the horizon ⛰️🐴 The Fell pony is one of the UK’s rare native pony breeds. They originate from the Cumbrian fells (where they get their name) and are adapted to live, work, and thrive in all the extreme weather the region is known for. They are an extremely versatile breed and well suited to all kinds of riders, drivers and liberty trainers. Not to mention their wonderful suitability to conservation and rewilding due to their natural hardiness. The Fell pony was also famously ridden by the late Queen in her latter years. Her fell pony, Carltonlima Emma, made a striking lone figure at the funeral - she certainly made a few people tear up as she stood patiently waiting for the Queen’s coffin to pass. SWIPE ➡️ Good morning! I'm back from the most lovely week, pootling around the gorgeous Kent countryside! The weather was unseasonably chilly at times, but we managed to dodge any rain showers by choosing, very well, which direction to travel in, each day. We've been to some lovely towns and villages, and beautiful gardens and thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing week in the countryside, with our girls joining us for a long weekend! I'll be sorting through all my photos and will look forward to sharing them in my gallery. I spent yesterday with my oldest friend. We met at Middle School and the rest, as they say, is history. She drove up to the Shire and we spent the day at @blenheimpalace and when I say day, I mean all day. Chatting and walking, walking and chatting, visiting the Icons of British Fashion exhibition and she surprised me with Afternoon Tea in the Orangery. Unfortunately, my situation hasn’t improved. I’m still experiencing a lot of pain, and it seems the painkillers are no longer effective. I definitely need to start contacting doctors again since enduring this pain isn’t normal. 🙈😐 My content here on Instagram has changed quite a bit. 🪻 ☔️ 🐾 April showers, bluebells & and very muddy dog. 🐾❤️ Can’t get more British than that seeing a sweet old couple eating home made sarnies sitting in their open boot with their rain macs on, an ice cream van open for business in a water logged car park in torrential down pour still getting customers - as well as a bunch of school kids walking through the mud doing their Duke Of Edinburgh carrying an armies worth of luggage & a guy stood under a ‘National Trust’ tent in the middle of nowhere.😆😂😜🙃 🪻🪻🪻 As much as England is becoming a harder country to live in - the natural beauty of this land we’ve been blessed with really is stunning - all of this is 15 mins drive from our house! Where is Cheesus? .... Well you are probably asking me what or who is Cheesus! Well, Cheesus is a wooden mouse hidden in the Church of St. John Baptist in Cirencester. Once I saw the poster asking if you can find him then it had to be done! What a great idea to get the kids interested in the church. Did you also know there used to be an abbey in Cirencester? The Abbey Grounds are hidden behind the Market Place and this grand Church. The grounds contain the site of St Mary's Abbey which was consecrated in 1176 in the presence of Henry II, remaining until the Dissolution in 1539 when the Abbey was completely demolished. You can see a model of the Abbey inside the church. This Grade I listed building is built of Cotswold stone and is one of the largest parish churches in England. And when you've explored this Cotswolds church why not partake in a coffee and admire this stunning building. For World Art Deco Day here’s something fun: Eltham Palace in Greenwich. A couple called the Courtaulds built a 1930s house on to a 1470 banquet hall that was built for Edward 1V, one of my fav English kings. In the old days Eltham Palace was also the childhood home of Henry Vlll but it eventually went to rack and ruin as it fell out of favour with later kings. Then the Courtaulds stepped in and restored the hall and built this wonderful home that is homage to art deco with Swedish wood interiors, ocean liner imagery and all the sleekness we have come to appreciate of the period which lasted until around 1939. Eltham Palace is now in the care of English Heritage and we liked their enthusiastic staff and volunteers. I haven’t done the interiors justice but I hope you like them. Sturt’s Folly, also known as Horton Tower, is an architectural folly located in Horton, Dorset. It’s a grand structure that stands out for its height and design, often catching the eye of passersby. Here’s a brief overview of its history: Construction: The tower was built by Humphrey Sturt, who was also an MP for Dorset from 1745 to 17861. While some sources suggest it was constructed in 17502, others propose different dates, with 1726 being a likely year due to historical deductions Design: This magnificent seven-story structure is made of red brick and stands at 140 feet high2. It’s hexagonal in plan with round turrets to alternate faces. Purpose: The original purpose of the tower is unclear, but it’s believed to have been used as an observatory for stargazing or as a vantage point for observing hunting activities. Current State: Over the years, the tower fell into disrepair but has found a new purpose housing mobile phone signal masts, with restoration work undertaken by Vodafone. Sturt’s Folly is a classic example of the follies that were popular among the wealthy during the 18th and 19th centuries, serving more as decorative landmarks than functional buildings. The history of Hartsholme Park 🌳 Did you know, Hartsholme Country Park used to be home to Hartsholme Hall? Built in 1862, this grand building was built for Joseph Shuttleworth, a successful engineer from Lincoln. The Hall was used for multiple things in its lifetime, but sadly fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 50s. To coincide with the upcoming Festival of History, Hartsholme will be hosting an exciting event to celebrate the Hall's legacy. On Saturday 4 May, the original footprint of the Hall will be mapped out, reflecting the original ground floor layout of this magnificent building. To highlight more of Hartsholme's fascinating history, there will also be a series of live talks taking place throughout the day, as well as an exhibition of Victorian artefacts and photographs.
