Going out on a walk with friends or a naturalist group can be a fun way to explore 🔍new species. You can see plants 🌱 and other species you might not have seen before! On a recent walk with a friend while we were killing time before an event, we happened upon a few plant species, one of which she had not seen before. She said that she always enjoys our walks because of the introduction to “new-to-her” species. While taking a walk, you can get familiar with plants around you by: 🌟Going with a friend and noting what you see 🌟Going with a local naturalist group 🌟Taking a picture and using your phone’s built in AI for plant identification or a plant app 🌟Logging your observation in iNaturalist and letting someone else identify it for you. Pictured here is a Fremontodendron species (flannelbush) and Triteleia laxa (Ithuriel’s spear). I got to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon down in RI with the Restler family. Their 11 year old, Sol, was interested in learning how to forage, so for his birthday they booked a private forage followed by a specially prepared picnic. We strolled through fields and wood edges, gathering violets, dandelions, spring onions, garlic mustard, Norway maple flowers, shagbark hickory bark and more. Then, they feasted on a spread of magnolia jelly, ramp compound butter, pickled magnolias, pine needle soda, pickled eggs topped with ramp leaves, cheese and bread. Thanks to Victoria, Sol, Sylvie and Byron for a memorable afternoon! #foraging #forager #bostonforaging #wildfood #foragedfood #wildedibles #outdooreducation #plantidentification #nature #getoutside #exploring #edibleexcursions #familyforaging #foragingclass

My Wisteria Amethyst Falls appears to have died over winter so decided to get a replacement for the front of the house to complete the dream of a wisteria covered front wall. It is a beautiful purple flowered cultivar- according to the label it is supposedly ‘Kapiteyn Fuji’- but don’t think this is right as that is a white flowered form. Anyone have any ideas what cultivar and species this could be? Was wondering if it is Wisteria ‘Iko Yama Fuji’ #wisteria #plantidentification #plantidentificationhelp #spring #wisteriaidentification

Ramps are popping! Ramps / Wild Leek / Allium tricoccum = same plant w/ many names. Ramps need to be protected, replanted, and if harvested, to do so with care and consciousness toward these ends. Ramps take time to develop: production from sowing seed to root harvest can take 5 to 7 years. They are slow growing Native American perennials of the “onion family’ who are endangered in some regions. If you find a well-established colony, harvest should be less than 5% of the plants. Another recommendation is to harvest only one leaf from several mature plants. This approach leaves the roots intact so the plants are not killed. My handful of ramp leaves was harvested in this manner. I encourage those of us that are able to plant this lovely, tasty friend so we can regenerate this resource, since zealous harvesting may cause it to become endangered. If you can, plant seeds as they mature later in the season (see last photo) to create new patches. And if an area is super abundant and ramp congested, thin it a touch and dig up by the root to replant and create more abundance. I'll preserve these ramp leaves in salt making a kind of bouillon to eke out through the year.  More about + recipe for making old school bouillon here: https://bit.ly/3nhC2o4 or DM us for the link #Ramps  #AlliumTricoccum   #SpringForaging  #Foraging  #WildEdible  #WildFood  #ForagingAndFeasting  #InTheWildKitchen  #WildFoodHealthBoosters  #DinaFalconi  #Botanizing  #PlantIdentification  #SustainableHarvest #Garden #DIY

🌱🔍Calling all plant detectives…it’s Plant ID Saturday! Can you identify this stunning perennial? Standing tall on 1-2 ft. stems, this plant boasts upright, elongated clusters of blue, pea-like flowers, set against compound leaves. Each leaf is intricately divided into 7-11 leaflets, adding to this plant's natural beauty. While purple is the main hue of its flowers, occasional blooms of pink and white may surprise you! Thriving in both sun and part shade, and adaptable to dry or moist soil conditions, this beauty offers versatility for gardeners seeking to add a splash of color and charm to their garden. Fun Fact: The Latin name of this perennial is derived from the Latin word “Lupus”, meaning “wolf,” as these plants were once believed to deplete or “wolf” the mineral content of the soil. Interestingly enough, the truth is quite the opposite - this plant and its relatives actually enhance soil fertility!🐺 🕵️For more information about native plants in Rhode Island, visit https://web.uri.edu/rinativeplants/. 🌼 On your next outing in nature say hello to Eriophyllum confertiflorum, also known as Golden Yarrow or Yellow Yarrow! This California native boasts wooly leaves when young and eye-catching yellow flower heads that brighten the landscape. Its common name comes from its resemblance to the true yarrow, known for its white blooms. 🌿 A dense cluster can feature up to 30 golden yellow flower heads, each with a large center of disc flower and a fringe of oval ray florets. As a member of the Asteraceae family, it has both disc and ray flowers that make up the whole structure we normally think of as an individual flower head. You can find these beauties blooming from January to July so keep an eye out for them right now! ☀️ . . . #GoldenYarrow #CaliforniaNativePlants #EriophyllumConfertiflorum #Wildflowers #Botany #NatureLovers #OutdoorExploration #FloralBeauty #PlantIdentification #botanylove #californialivin #nature_photo #outsideplay #nature_lover #californiaadventures #outsidelife #naturelovers #naturepic #naturephotography #natureislife #nature_shooters #botanyflowers #outsiders #californiacaptures #sandiegochildrenandnature #sandiegonature

Pasque flower or Pulsatilla patens var. multifida. These are a very common flower in this area, however this is my first time seeing them. They bloom early in the spring and have bright purple tints. It’s a native plant of Wyoming and it belongs to the Ranunculaceae family or the buttercup family. 🔹Fun fact it is actually the state flower for South Dakota! 🔹There is over 60 species throughout the US. 🔹They are found in cooler regions and often places that are wetter in the spring. I used UW biodiversity website, Rocky Mountain herbivorous map, as well as the FS plant of the week website for my information. 🔸The purpose of this page is for me personally to learn more plants and a few facts about them. I love learning new plants and recognizing things in the world around me and so I hope this reaches people that enjoy those things too. 🌲Feel free to comment other facts you know about each plant or your favorite time or place seeing it! #learningtogether #learningplants #plantidentification #rangemanagement #rockymountains #justtryingtomakeit #selfimprovement #bekind

Can anyone help with the identification of this plant? As far as I know it is a willow but it is tiny and the stems lie horizontally across the ground. I didn't plant it. It is growing in an area where I am planting wild flowers in the area of my field that I am regenerating. The leaf arrangements are unusual. The ever so lovely Western White Trillium! (Trillium ovatum var. ovatum) Also known as Birthroot, Wood Lily, and Easter Lily. A member of the Lily family. 🌱 The name Trillium comes from the Latin word for three, as you may notice all the plant parts are in threes, the petals, the "leaves" (which aren't leaves at all but bracts), and the sepals. The Trillium grows in open to dense moist forests at low to mid elevations. You can find the blooms from late February to April. (As late as June though in higher elevations more north) Although the plant is beautiful you should never pick it. 1. It can take 7-9 years from germination for one plant to flower. 2. Each flower only yields ONE seed pod a year. 3. Each plant can live up to 25 years. 4. They gather all the nutrients from the sun in the short period of spring that they bloom for the WHOLE year. 5. The plants are propagated by ants! The seed pod is covered in a delicious sticky substance that attracts the ants. They bring the pod down to their nests, eat the outer coating, and then ignore the seed. The subterranean environment is the perfect cradle for the Trillium to germinate. These plants are like tiny miracles that announce spring's arrival! Get out in the mountains and spot some before they go away for the year. 🌟 #adventure #plantidentification #pnw #Trillium #hiking #spring

Let's talk about bluebells! 🌼 Do you know the difference between Spanish and English bluebells? Take a closer look next time you visit Westonbirt Arboretum🌿 English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), have delicate, deep-violet bells with turned-up tips of the petals, narrow leaves, a subtle fragrance, and flowers that tend to droop to one side. Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) have a more robust appearance, with broader leaves and upright stems, with the flowers all around the stem. Their bells are larger and more open. #Bluebells #WestonbirtArboretum #FlowerFacts #PlantIdentification

Urtica dioica L. English: Stinging nettle. Swedish: Brännässla. 🌿 Urtica dioica, often known as nettle or stinging nettle is a common plant that can be found worldwide. The species is divided into six subspecies, five of which have many stinging hairs called trichomes on the leaves. When the trichomes break on contact with something like your bare skin, these needle-like hairs inject a stinging acid into the skin, triggering a burning, tingling sensation and an itchy rash. If you pick the plant from the bottom up and don’t break the small needles (growing upwards) you don’t feel anything at all. Even the leaves are safe to touch gently even tho they too are being covered in trichomes, the trick is to not break them. A good way to get rid of these hairs is to burn them over a fire for a few seconds. Another thing you can do is to run your hand up and down with gloves to break the trichomes, or throw them in boiling water. 🌿 The cooked plant is safe to eat and contains many nutrients. A nice first project could be to try and cook a nettle soup. The taste of nettles is similar to spinach and is really simple to make. 🌿 Hope you learned something new! www.iskogochmark.com 💚 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #plant #wildplants #ediblegarden #edibleplants #wildernessliving #friluftsliv #intothewild #outdoorswoman #getoutside #plantidentification #plandid #forest #forestlife #explore #getoutside #wildnature

We'd love your help and, as always, there will be free food! ❤️‍🔥🥙 #bioblitz #inaturalist #plantidentification #biodiversity #citizenscience #citizenscienceproject #biodiverse #losangelesscience #nationalgeographicwild @inaturalistorg @westlacollege #communitypowered

Today I was parked near an unmowed area beside a large parking lot next to a local hospital, and there were a ton of these beautiful, daisy-like "weeds" growing in this obviously completely ignored area, so I yanked some out of the ground. I got good roots when I yanked them up, so I took them home, trimmed them back to a few inches tall, planted them in my sunniest flower bed, and gave them a good watering to - I hope - help them root where I've planted them.⁣ ⁣ Can anyone tell me what these lovely wildflowers are? We are located in East Tennessee.
