April 2024 vs March 2022. The Hazel tree I planted, for the Queens Jubilee, has established really well now. It's been producing nuts too. I havent harvested them as I wanted to leave it be for a few years at least. I've under-planted with some ferns which are hanging in after being trampled on every day by the dog. One advantage of having scaffolding up for chimney works is seeing the birds eye view of the garden you designed and planted 20 years ago. All that was here was the mature yew hedge facing the house, the ancient tulip tree and the main outside wall of the walled garden. We installed a replica greenhouse @alitex_ , planted new yew hedges and cloud pruned them to match the existing yew, created box edged beds and planted and trained espaliered hornbeam. Filled with flowers from the garden, our old wall seemed the ideal spot for the photo. I can never resist a basket and this is one of the prettiest I’ve seen and it would be ideal for a trip to your local shops or at home for picked flowers or vegetables. April High winds, low pressure, brilliant skies, hail, heavy showers, chills and finally sunshine! Of course we are in that circus we call April. Tulip’s reach skyward, blossom flutters then falls, vivid leaves wave wildly, birds bounce from tree to ground watching, hopeful of an upturned worm. As a volunteer, I’m not often in the garden later in the day, but what a change a setting sun makes. A beautiful rose I saw one summer in Sissinghurst Castle. I am afraid I do not remember the name. A bit of sad day today because there was a Blackbird nesting in my Wisteria and this morning she wasn't on the nest - she had been incubating the eggs for a week , but this morning she has gone and so have the eggs :-( Very sad because I saw her build this nest and put in so much work and she knew I had seen her and didn't mind. I have no idea what happened (there are no feathers so I think and I hope she is OK but definitely something stole the eggs). I hope she comes back but I don't know if she would want to risk it. 😞

National gardening week🍃 When we bought our house the garden did daunt me/ us slightly (it still does). We had no clue what we were doing really, especially after living in London for 14 years. However we are truly learning as we go and it’s very much a labour of love. We are a very outdoorsy family and we always give things our best shot. We’ve made some mistakes, got some things right and also been very lucky with the rest (wisteria pruning gives me much stress). We’re redoing our vegetable garden this year to make it all more manageable. The previous owners were retired and had much spare time; but we don’t and we aren’t going the vegetable area any justice at all or what it deserves. So this year the plan is to strip it all back and next year add in one or two small beds which will make it much easier for us as a family. We love getting the girls involved in it all (Evie doesn’t need many excuses when it comes to mud), and we want to plant a few more trees with them so they can see them grow as they get older. It’s definitely a lifestyle change, but one that we adore. With all the stresses life brings, nature and greenery bring so much calm. Now let’s hope the climbing roses come back out to play this year and we didn’t mess those up! We thought we’d share these photos as we’re so pleased with our tulips at home this year. 🌷🌷🌷 Previous years we’ve planted them in the garden beds, but soon realised that unless you have A LOT of them, they always looked a bit underwhelming. So, inspired by a visit to Sarah Raven’s garden in Perch Hill last summer and her use of containers, we decided to go for it! In November we spent ages choosing specific tulips for our vintage planters, that we’ve had in the garden. And we have to say we’re chuffed with the results.
