Laramie plains lakes update. Went out and checked ice depths on the main plains lakes at 12:30 PM on 12/6. It was warm(55 degrees) and Windy so be careful as always!!!! Meeboer had 3-7” drilled holes both off the boat ramp area and on the west end solid 4” was still in most spots we tested. Good size opening around the aerator and moving to the NE.. Gelatt had 3-5” with a good 4” halfway out to the aerator. Twin Buttes was still 90%+ capped but had lots of open rifts and didn’t look good enough to test. It did have about 2 1/2” on 12/3 so hopefully cold weather will build back fast. Lake Hattie is the best option for any one wanting open water to fish. Had two long rod fisherman and even a boat out on it when we went by. First ice reports for the season. Meeboer was the only one that had a bit of safe ice. Be careful as it will change and vary daily. Meeboer 2.5-3.5” completely capped Gelatt 1.5-3” by the boat dock, completely capped Twin Buttes was about 40-50% covered with lots of open pockets. Lake Hattie is still 90%+ open with just a little ice by the narrows. Alsop is completely capped but only about 1.5” of ice at the boat ramp area. “I was recently camping on Lake Hattie in Wyoming and decided to hike around the entire perimeter […]. During my hike, I noticed the brim of a hat just barely poking out of the sand at the water’s edge. I pulled the hat out, and because it was covered in algae and encrusted in white lime, I tied it to the back of my pack. Upon returning home to Colorado, I soaked the hat in a bucket, then used a brush to clean it. Much to my surprise, it came out looking brand new, and I was able to see it was a Tilley hat. Furthermore, there was a name printed on the label - B.E Miller. Curious, I Googled the name and came upon a 2021 obituary for Mr. Miller. It listed his children, one of whom, Keith Miller, lives in the Denver area. I Googled Keith and found his contact information. I emailed him telling him I found his father’s hat and offered him to come pick it up at my house. He responded with how thrilled he was and came within a few days. According to Keith, his father had not visited Lake Hattie in many years, and estimated the hat may have been at the bottom of the lake for 10 years. Wow, that hat survived that long under water and in the sand!” - David R

We’re semi-new to boondocking, so picking a spot to stay for a few days takes us some time and research to decide on.
