📍 Lake Hillier , Australia Lake Hillier is a saline lake on the edge of Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago in the Goldfields-Esperance region, off the south coast of Western Australia. It is particularly notable for its pink colour. Lake Hillier on Middle Island, Australia, is the color of bright-pink bubble gum. Researchers recently discovered that the lake's unique color is caused by algae, halobacteria, and other microbes. Additionally, this body of water is extremely salty—just as salty as the Dead Sea. For many years, it was the finish line for the famed Dakar Rally road race, and it's still frequented by local villagers who harvest salt from the water there, their skin smeared with shea butter to keep it safe. Despite bacteria being the reason for the strawberry milk color, Lake Hillier is totally safe to swim in. In fact, the lake's high salt content likely makes the water so dense that you'd float incredibly easily, the way you would in the Dead Sea. The Pink Lake was discovered in 1802 by British explorer Matthew Flinders and has defied scientific explanations for so many years since. Scientists attribute the bright pink colour of Lake Hillier to the presence of Dunaliella Salina, a micro algae commonly found in salty lakes. The only living organisms in Lake Hillier are microorganisms including Dunaliella salina, red algae which cause the salt content in the lake to create a red dye which helps produce the colour, as well as red halophilic bacteria, bacterioruberin, present in the salt crusts. Standing at around 600 metres in length and 250m in width, the lake is small enough to walk around - yet it is not the easiest to get to. Tourists can get a clear view of it from above via a flight tour or access it from the sea by boat if accompanied by an official guide. But nature likes to mess with us and creates oddities just like Lake Hillier in Western Australia. . With its mere 600 meters in length, Lake Hillier is not one that will impress you by its size. Nor will it impress you by its diverse fishes that inhabit it. . The reason of its unique colour is still a topic that is not fully understood by scientists, although most suspect it has to do with the presence of the Dunaliella salina microalgae. The Dunaliella produces carotenoids, a pigment found in carrots as well. But the presence of halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts could be another explanation. A reaction between the salt and the sodium bicarbonate that is found in the water may cause it as well.

Der Lake Hillier ist ein 600 Meter langer rosafarbener Salzsee auf der Insel Middle Island, der größten Insel des Recherche-Archipels im Bundesstaat Western Australia bei Esperance. ...
