WE ARE BLOODY OUT OF THERE!! We headed into the marina for Ryan's birthday last year and ended up staying a few months to fly around Aus to different weddings and appointments. Scotty also came in the marina for Ryan's birthday and ended up on the hardstand to replace his cutlass bearing. Once the shaft came out, we found it was bent and damaged, so an insurance claim was made. Almost 9 months later, alot of incompetence, 3 shafts, two mechanics, alot of rust repairs and almost a whole rewiring of his boat, he got back in the water and we finally made it out. As we left, our depth gauge stopped working, so we had to hope the charts were right as we zig zagged through the shallows. She came good halfway through the sail and we turned it off till we had to anchor incase it stopped again when we needed it the most. We gave the engine a good run, only pulling out the new yanky headsail, which didn't flog around in the shitty downwind sail. After the initial shock to the system of the boat rolling around, the kids feeling icky disappeared and the excitement kicked in. We had a beautiful time, had a boobie bird land on our bow right before we made it into anchor with another friends boat. Seriously…? Seriously! Okay, In the back you can see what I thought was a clean deck after all the Saharan sand that dropped on us this week (second pic is how it looked like midday #nofilter). I washed it yesterday as I got my deck wash sort of working (it was sucking air into the feed hose so the pressure was not great but I got rid of all the loose sand at least). So today I fixed the issue and wanted to try my pressure washer that I bought several months ago. #omg! I can only say this: if you ever think of installing a deck wash, do it! Make sure you can use both salt and fresh water (salt water will make the entire boat crusty with salt, flushing the boat after the clean with fresh water makes it so… #fresh!). We had a magical night to Marbella. We were surrounded by a group of dolphins for hours. The bioluminescence lit up so bright and we could see the outlines of the dolphins and the wake we made (📷 2). There were so many stars in the sky. When we arrived at Marbella we could already see the rock of Gibraltar and we also saw the African continent in the distance. ~ November 2023 We continued to Gibraltar the next day and we could see the rock coming closer. Morocco was also in sight across the sea. We stayed close to shore in shallow water to avoid orcas. An airplane landed right in front of us, very spectacular (📷 4). We were in a dilemma because the weather forecast was perfect to cross to the Canary Islands the next day. 🗺️ it’s only about 150nm from Gibraltar to Almerimar but we postponed the trip quite a lot. We weren’t ready to go out on our own. Some people struggle to understand how can we have possibly been scared after having sailed ten thousand miles? But going out on our own, coastal sailing, in and out of marinas is a whole different thing. ⛵️ When we finally got out there we loved it though. Yes there was stress (in fact Manon was ill for a whole month) but we handled ourselves very well and we are very proud and happy. 💪🏻 Breaking free from fear and anxiety isn’t easy, but we did it! 🎉 And now we’re staying put for a while so we’ll have to go through that process all over again when it’s finally time to start moving 😂 hey ho such is life! 🌊 Missing those shades of blue out there but also pretty excited about the work we’re going to be doing soon. 🛠️ It’s weird to be excited about antifoul and thru holes. We had a visit from master mola maker Venancio. I was able to show him two of his molas of Guna medicine flowers that we have framed and hung in Reach from our previous visit. These hand-embroidered molas use layers of colorful cloth and the most intricate stitching to create what are worn as the clothes/blouses of Guna women. The process is that he arrives with a large trashcan full and shows you all of the panels as the pile grows. Then, as he carefully puts each one away, you can select those that you are interested in examining further for purchase. Venancio is the best. He also shared with me a mola in progress. It’s been a busy 2 weeks @ Shelter Bay Marina already, running errands in Colón and Panama City. Nestled in the grounds of the former Fort Sherman US Army base, the jungle has reclaimed the area. As a result, the bird life is amazing... not to mention monkeys, coatis and other critters. We spent much time here years past, including a several month lightning strike refit. Sailed with the screecher for most of the passage down to Panamá. It is 81 square meters @240% overlap. Along with the mainsail, it kept us going along at a healthy clip in 11 kts of wind on the beam, even with adverse current. During the trip, we saw great egrets and little blue herons in the middle of nowhere migrating north, hooked and lost a marlin, and watched a cool green flash. Near the end of the passage, the block for the sheet blew out unexpectedly! So we had to revert to the genoa for the home stretch. The calm weather forecast was perfect for our plan to stop in the Albuquerque Cays on our way from Providencia to Panama. It turns out we were lucky to be able to stay there for the week. We knew that there is a Colombian Armada stationed on one island. About 5-6 Army officers are stationed in several island outposts such as this as an Army base to protect the Cays in disputed claims with Nicaragua. They are stationed for 45 days at a time, most are 18-20 years old and some are seeing the sea for the first time. These stations have no boats. The neighboring island here is a fisherman camp and is frequented by skiffs coming from San Andres. Fisherman stay here for days to a week at a time to fish the area (which explains why we didn’t see any fish to catch). At the time of our arrival, the Colombian Guarda Costa (Navy) had a boat visiting from San Andres. We expected a visit from them and had a cordial inspection by them on a visit to Reach, similar to other countries procedures and usually a formality if finding nothing suspicious (smuggling drugs or immigrants would be at the top of their list). They even had a form for us to sign at the end to verify that we were treated well ~ impressive. Unfortunately, the Navy also came with the message that this was not an anchorage and that we would have to leave. Our friends on another boat Mabul had been here for a while with propulsion problems, so they were exempt and given permission to stay. We stated we were waiting for favorable wind to sail ~ the forecast was for complete calm for the week. Of course, they discussed that we had engines, but understood that sail is our primary mode of transport. They ran that up the chain of command and we were given permission to stay until the winds filled in. Port Control in San Andres does monitor the area and has excellent radio signal to the Cays. We were asked to check out with them when we left, which we did. We enjoyed the stay, meeting the very kind Army, Navy and Fishermen!
