Rodas (Caria), Hemidracma, 170-150 a.C. AR / 1,27g. / 12,74mm. Gold Wreath Still Adorns 2,500 Year-Old Skull in Crete, Greece The skull of a crowned athlete with a gold wreath in the shape of a laurel branch still attached to it is perhaps one of the most impressive exhibits in Greece. The flesh disintegrated after 2,500 years, but the wreath stuck and remained on the skull. Inside the mouth, a silver coin was found as a token to Charon, who in Greek mythology was the ferryman of Hades who carried the souls of the newly deceased to the underworld. The skull was found in the cemetery of the ancient city of Lato and was one of the most spectacular exhibits at Agios Nikolaos museum in Crete. #skeleton #greek #crete #gold #greekarcheology #canyoufeelthebeatwithinmyheart #goldleaf #skull #sacramento #greekfatgirl

Lato: Nestled in the mountains in the eastern part of Crete, 3 km from the village of Kritsa and about 10 km from the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos, are the remains of the ancient city of Lato. The city is presumably named after the goddess Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. The remains of the ancient city are exceptionally well preserved. Most of the structures currently visible date to the fourth and third centuries BC, so the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic periods. However, terracotta figurines and plaques unearthed at the site have revealed that the earliest phase of the city probably dates back to the seventh century BC. Late Minoan IIIC pottery fragments suggest that the site of the later Archaic and Classical city may also have been inhabited in the twelfth century BC. The town was built in a highly defensible position, on a double acropolis, around 300 to 400 metres above sea level. Lato was protected by a strong circuit wall. To access the ancient city, you need to take a path from the entrance of the site that takes you to the main gate. This is the same route that visitors to the city would have taken in the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic periods. The slopes of the mountain were terraced to make it easier to construct all the necessary buildings. Most of the structures currently visible are houses. The main street consists of steps that lead from the gate to a relatively large, flat area in between the sites two peaks. This was Latos agora, the central meeting place of any ancient Greek city of the historic era. Located so high up in the mountains, water was no doubt a problem for the ancient Latians. In the centre of the agora is a large and deep cistern, with steps leading from the surface down to the bottom to make it easier to access the water. The importance of this cistern is emphasized by the fact that the structure directly to the south of it was a temple, although we dont know to which deity is was dedicated; perhaps it was Leto. #greece #visitgreece #visitgreecegr #greece🇬🇷 #ancientgreece #ancient #archeology #greekarcheology #archeological #archeologicalsite #archaeology #greekarchaeology #archaeologylife #archaeologica

The Arch of Hadrian ⛩️ This triumphal arch, made of Pentelic marble, lies on an ancient street that led from the old city of Athens to the new section, built by Hadrian. It was constructed by the Achenians in A.D. 131-132, in honor of their benefactor emperor. The monument, which is 18 m. high and 13 m. wide and is in the Corinthian order, has two identical façades and is divided vertically into two distinct sections. The lower follows the form of a Roman honorary arch, while the upper imitates the traditional Greek propylon. Two inscriptions are carved on the architrave, one on each side: the first, on the side towards the Acropolis reads "This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus", the second, on the other side, facing the new city, reads "This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus". The remains of wall-paintings may suggest that in the Middle Ages the arch was part of a Christian church. In 1778 it was converted into a gate of the defence wall around Athens, and was known as the "Princess Gate". #archofhadrian #thriumphalarch #arch #athens #athens_city #visitathens #athensvoice #athènes #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #sculpture #sculptures #sculptureart #sculptor #scultura #escultura #ancientgreece

Embracing skeletons of Alepotrypa Nestled in the legendary Peloponnese region of Greece, archaeologists discovered one of the oldest graves ever found in that country. In the Alepotrypa Cave, a grave with a man and woman dates to 3800 BC. Although their relative positions are not as clear in photos as some of the other skeletons in this collection, the man is embracing or spooning the woman, with their arms and legs intertwined intimately. They may have been husband and wife. They died in their early to mid-20s and were found near the cave entrance in 2013. The Alepotrypa Cave is part of the Diros Caves, which served many purposes in the ancient world. People lived, worked, and buried their dead here. It was supposedly one of the many entrances to the underworld. #embracingskeletons #loveneverdies #alepotrypa #alepotrypacave #peloponnese #greece #love #greekfatgirl #loveevenindeath #greekskeletons #greekarcheology

The Temple of Apollo in Delphi 🏛️ The Temple of Apollo, also known as Apollonion, was a major part of the Panhellenic religious sanctuary located in Delphi. The temple and sanctuary at large were dedicated to one of the major Greek deities, Apollo, the god of archery, music, light, prophecy, the arts, and healing. There have been several temples built at Delphi throughout the history of the site, though the visible ruins seen in modernity are those of the temple built in the 4th century B.C.E. before its destruction under the orders of Theodosius I in 390 C.E. Kleobis and Biton (The ‘Twins’ of Argos) This pair of identical marble Kouri is the work of an archaic workshop of Argos from 580 BC. These sculptures are over life-size and are the oldest monumental votive offering recovered at Delphi. After they were discovered, they were identified as the famous brothers from Argos, Cleobis, and Biton. Recently scholars argue that the two Archaic Greek Kouroi may be the half-twin brothers in Greek mythology, known together as the Dioscuri. An inscription at the base identifies Polymedes of Argos as the sculptor, a Greek sculptor of the Archaic Period (6th century BC).  The statues are in a typical Peloponnesian style, massive and muscular with the left foot stepping forward, their hands are bent at the elbows, touching the thighs, and the hands closed in fists. The hair is curly and hangs on the front of the shoulders. Their eyes are large and almond-shaped with high eyebrows, and they bear the typical Archaic smile. #kouroi #kouros #twinofargos #kleobisandbiton #polymedes #argos #dioscuri #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #sculpture #sculptures #sculptureart #sculptor #scultura #escultura #ancientgreece #statue #delphiarchaeologicalmuseum

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum was founded in 1908 to house the first collections of Cretan antiquities, which were rapidly enhanced. Its cultural riches cover seven millennia, from the Neolithic period (7000 BC) to Roman times (3rd cent. AD). Following the restoration work of the past few years, completed in May 2014, the exhibition is housed in 27 rooms. The collections are now displayed according to modern museological practices and design, in chronological and thematic units accompanied by audiovisual material and introductory texts. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest and most remarkable museums in Greece, and among the most important museums in Europe. Located in the town center, it was designed by the architect Patroklos Karantinos and was built between 1935 and 1958 on a site previously occupied by the Venetian monastery of Saint-Francis which was destroyed by earthquake in 1856. The ruins of the monastery are visible in the MuseumΆs garden. Along with the permanent exhibition, the Museum organizes temporary exhibitions in Greece and abroad, creates and implements educational programs, collaborates with scientific and scholarly institutions, and hosts a variety of cultural events. The Column of the Dancers, by Praxiteles (330 BC) 🌿 The Column of the Dancers (also known as the Acanthus Column), carved from Pentelic marble, features statues of three young women forming the upper part of a column encircled with acanthus leaves. These spectacular sculptures, which stand nearly two meters (six feet) tall, were fixed atop a column 13 meters (43 ft) in height composed of five drums and a capital decorated with acanthus leaves. The figures wear short tunics and carrying baskets containing fruit, a symbol of abundance and fertility. Their bare feet are suspended in the air and their arms are raised. Thus creating the impression of dancing, which is how the sculpture gets its name. The column is believed to have supported a tripod of the kind sat on by the Pythia as she went into her oracular trances. The girls are thought to be celebrating the feast of the god Dionysus who also resided in the sanctuary. His presence was honored in the winter months when Apollo was resting or away elsewhere. The column is an Athenian offering to the sanctuary dated to 330 BC. It was discovered in 1894 and was the inspiration for the first of Claude Debussy's Préludes. The Dancers of Delphi are on display at the Delphi Archeological Museum. It must have been truly awe inspiring to see Delphi in its days of glory. ❤️ #dancersofdelphi #acanthuscolumn #dancerscolumn #cilumnofthedancers #praxiteles #praxitele #prassitele #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #sculpture #sculptures #sculptureart #sculptor #scultura #escultura #ancientgreece #delphiarchaeologicalmuseum

Opening tomorrow: Newcastle University’s Great North Museum presents ‘Voicing Objects’, a new display featuring a moving image artwork by WCPF’s own Olivia Turner in response to selected clay artefacts from the Shefton Collection of Greek Archaeology. These objects relate to the lives of women in the ancient world, bringing voice to historically marginalised stories. This embodied approach uses artefacts to think, feel, imagine, and voice with. The exhibition continues until 14 April 2024. ______ Voicing Objects Great North Museum: Hancock Barras Bridge Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4PT

The Delphi Tripod 🔥 The tripod, whose name comes from the Greek meaning "three-footed", is a three-legged piece of religious furniture used in offerings and other ritual procedures. This ritual role derives from its use as a simple support for a cooking vessel placed over a fire. However, the best known tripod is the stool at Delphi on which the Pythia sat to produce her oracles. #tripod #oracleofdelphi #pythia #tripods #theoracleofdelphi #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #tripode #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #greekmithology #sculpture #ancientgreece #bronze #delphiarchaeologicalmuseum

The Tholos of Delphi 🛕 The Tholos of Delphi is a circular temple which was built between 380 and 360 BC at the center of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. The tholos temple originally consisted of 20 Doric columns around the perimeter of the podium and 10 Corinthian half-columns in the interior. The three columns that stand have been re-erected. The Tholos may have sheltered an important statue, although the exact purpose of the structure is unknown. #tholos #tholosofdelphi #athenapronaia #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #oracleofdelphi #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #greekmithology #ancientgreece #ancientcivilization #ancient #antiques #antiquity #greektemple #temple #temples #greektemples

The Sphinx of Naxos 🦁 The Sphinx of Naxos, also Sphinx of the Naxians, now in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, is a 2.22 meter tall marble statue of a sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a woman, the chest and wings composed of the impressive feathers of a prey bird turned upward, and the body of a lioness. The Sphinx stood on a 10 meter column that culminated in one of the first Ionic capitals, and was erected next to the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, the religious center of Ancient Greece, in 560 BCE. #sphinxofnaxos #sphinxofinstagram #sphinx #sphinxofnaxians #sphynx #naxos #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #sculpture #sculptures #sculptureart #sculptor #scultura #escultura #ancientgreece #delphiarchaeologicalmuseum

Antinous 💇 A cult statue of Antinous, a young Bithynian famous for his beauty and a favorite of Emperor Hadrian. When he drowned in the Nile, still in his teens, he was hero-ized and worshipped as a demigod by order of the emperor in many parts of the Eastern Empire. At Delphi, one of the most beautiful statues representing him was erected in the sanctuary. It was unearthed in an excellent state of preservation, still shining thanks to the oil polishing it had undergone, like other cult statues in Antiquity. The work is representative of classicism at the time of the philhellene Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD). With its heroic-divine nudity, the statue follows the stylistic traditions of the great 5th and 4th century BC artists, but lacks the inner vitality of the archetypes. #antinous #antinoo #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #sculpture #sculptures #sculptureart #sculptor #scultura #escultura #ancientgreece #marble #statue #delphiarchaeologicalmuseum

The "Omphalos" in Delphi, the center of the world 🌀 The term "Omphalos" (Greek for "navel") in antiquity denoted a stone or object with religious value. In ancient Greece the carved stone was located at Delphi, in the Temple of Apollo, from which the Pythia spread her prophecies. 🗣️ Among the Ancient Greeks, it was a widespread belief that Delphi was the center of the world. According to the myths regarding the founding of the Delphic Oracle, Zeus, in his attempt to locate the center of the Earth, launched two eagles from the two ends of the world, and the eagles 🦅, starting simultaneously and flying at equal speed, crossed their paths above the area of Delphi, and so was the place where Zeus placed the stone. 🪨 #omphalos #onfalo #delphi #delfi #delphes #delphigreece #tripod #greece #greek #hellas #grecia #visitgreece #archeologie #archeologylovers #archeologia #archeology #greekarcheology #greekmithology #centeroftheworld #ancientgreece #ancientcivilization #ancient #antiques #antiquity
