(Day 296) Hair update. Believe me, I don't look like this most days. But we celebrated Natalie's birthday this weekend, so I took the occasion to actually put on some makeup and a dress. Hair is growing back nicely. I use a mix of rosemary oil, rose water, and distilled water sprayed into my hair to help it grow. As well as my led face mask on red. I still have the wig but haven't really used it. It makes me too warm, and when that happens, I get itchy everywhere. Side effects from chemo. I still wear my caps and work sent us all a nice Paris Olympic hat, which is so comfortable and light. I wear it when out in the sun to protect my scalp. My skin since chemo is highly sensitive to sunlight. It can get red in just minutes and even on overcast days. It's been a struggle to get my skin back to where it was before treatment. But it's getting there and will soon share some products that have worked for me for my fellow cancer fighters and survivors. It’s been One year & 3 months since my Stem Cell Transplant to battle #multiplemyeloma, & now I get to go back & volunteer on that same floor! It has been such an incredible experience to go through the training so that I can visit & hopefully encourage other MM patients!! I’ve already got so many amazing stories that I can’t wait to share, but last week was a cool one. When I walked into Joe Morgan’s room, so many worlds converged. Only a divine plan does something so incredible & special. Allan, The head chaplain, had already told me I needed to meet this guy named Joe, but I had no idea how awesome it was going to be. Joe and his wife Liz are from Minden, La. Where my sister Sara lives. I had talked with Liz back in the summer, after Joe’s diagnosis, but I didn’t know he was in the hospital in Dallas, with my same doctor no doubt! She told me that her sister-in-law is my friend & fellow #Freak/cancer warrior Pam Nelson. Needless to say, we all talked a while & prayed together for Joe & that God would continue to use all Our stories for his glory. It was so incredible. Pray for Joe, along with my 4 other new friends that I was able To visit with as well. I can’t wait to get back up there this week. Radiation day 8 ✅ Ripp has 4 more days to go! Woohoo! He has had a few rougher days with nausea setting in. His radiation zone is his left flank so it’s causing some upset stomach he issues but nothing compared to the nausea and vomiting with his chemo rounds. He usually bounces back to his happy self. He’s still getting all his nutrition through his TPN so we haven’t had to stress about calories through his feeding tube which has been so nice! He did so well today that on the way home he was able to do his 2 hours of classroom time since on Mondays his teacher doesn’t have a class and she’s able to give Ripp 1:1 instruction. We will always be so thankful for her and to her service of making sure Ripp doesn’t feel left out. Since it was on the way home little sis wasn’t able to go. Ripp is really just such a warrior through all of this and we are just enjoying this less intense part of treatment and all of his good days. His sleep is also doing better. He gives us longer stretches. Still not sleeping through the night but 2-3 wake ups is better than all night every 30 minutes. (Day 295) I wish I could make all their dreams come true, but at least I got one of the big ones. A huge thank you to @livevamaria for helping me set this up. After the bus accident, one of the things that made Ashley upset the most was that she would miss seeing @jeremymjordan, her absolute favorite, in The Great Gatsby at the Papermill Playhouse. At that time, we didn't know if it would transfer to Broadway. She got a super sweet video message from Eva and Jeremy. After lots of hard work, Ashley has made leaps and bounds in her recovery and can now return to seeing shows. Well, @bwaygatsby opened last week, and the girls had tickets for Saturday. I reached out to Jeremy and Eva just to let them know they were finally coming to the show and to keep an eye out at the stage door cause they really wanted to thank them in person. The video meant so much at one of the hardest times of their lives. Eva, the goddess she is, answered my message, inviting them backstage. My sister-in-law kept it secret, revealing it to the girls right after the show. And it was an experience of a lifetime. They got to stand center stage, seeing what it looks like from the other side. Eva took such great care of them, welcoming them and showing them around. And also bringing Jeremy over to meet them. He signed all of Ashley's programs from some of his previous shows, something that meant the world to her. I only wish I was far enough in my recovery to see their joy in person. I miss Broadway so much. But seeing the happiness and excitement it brings Ashley, I'm still getting to experience what I feel when I sit in a Broadway theater. And my time will come soon. And we will all be going back to see The Great Gatsby together cause they absolutely loved it. I donated blood for the first time yesterday! I filled the bag in 4 minutes and 5 seconds (don’t tell me if that’s not fast, because I’m so proud 😂). We hosted a blood drive and a stem cell donor drive at the campground. We had 19 successful blood donations, including plasma and double red cells. We also registered 10 people in the national Bone Marrow Registry! As you know, Zach needs a stem cell transplant and we have yet to find him a match. If you are 18-55 years old and in good health, please consider registering as a stem cell donor. Our minor sacrifice is nothing compared to what the recipient is going through. Wet day activities- Finally wrote a letter to my donor. So much to say and where to start!? All i know is my cells came from a 23 yr old European man. Selfless hero! I'll give it to the nurse when I go to hospital and see the consultant on Friday. Another big meal though I only managed half but I was still happy with that! (Day 294) The highest number of steps I've done in a day since I've began walking. Hopefully, I won't pay for it a lot tomorrow. But it was such a nice day and I wanted to get out of the house after working inside all week. And I woke up feeling like I had the energy to do it. I crashed early the night before and had skipped two days of walking cause I felt tired after work. Recovery is a constant up and down most days. So I'm learning to listen to what my body tells me it's up to each day. I celebrate the wins but have learned to stop beating myself up on the days I just don't have it. My body has been through a lot in a year. There’s no crying in baseball, but there definitely is in cancer treatment. Don’t worry—I’m not crying here. Just a little leaky eyed due to ocular GVHD. My new cells are a little riled up now that they’re no longer being suppressed and have started attacking some areas of my body, including my eyes, mouth, and “lady parts” (as my doctor called it 😂). Thankfully NO vital organs are being harmed, though my liver markers keep spiking and dropping for some unknown reason. Radiation day 6 ✅ Ripp is officially halfway through his 12 proton radiation treatments for his NB treatment plan. He’s been feeling really good for the most part. He’s experiencing some fatigue throughout the day and needs a nap. After that though he channels all his energy and he’s nonstop until he hits the pillow. He’s loved being outside with his siblings, Nannie’s, and friends. He has been playing in so much water, his intrusive thoughts clear all of the counters, and his laugh you can hear wherever he is nonstop. We love these good days with him and will never take them for granted. He’s still struggling with sleep. Some nights are good and some nights he’s still up like a newborn. He has one more day of radiation for this week and then we are hopeful to get some much needed restorative sleep this weekend. He’s making lots of friends at Huntsman. He knows child life by name. He loves the stickers going back to the vault. And he’s in such a routine now he doesn’t scream the whole hour drive and all of waiting until sedation. (Day 292) Even my meds remind me of baseball. Doesn't it look like a home plate. I'm down to about 7 pills in the morning or so. And many are much smaller, thank god. But I'll swallow as many as I need to never have to do chemo again. Energy was a little low today, but it's to be expected later in the week. Last week, I crashed around Wednesday. So, making it an extra day is progress. I'm taking it easy when I need to. And getting in long walks when I have the energy.
