Even as adults there are days we feel like staying home rather than going to work or going to that appointment we're less than thrilled about. But every day? Hi we’re still here 👋🏼 I’ll have a life update soon as things are moving at warped speed it feels and I’m not sure how to show up in this space. Although this season has been incredibly busy, I’m always reminded how special co-op is for my kids. Watering mullein and seedlings with friends. Our current obsession, gator boots, shirtless babies, class outside, and just the ability to get dirty, do new things, and be surrounded by people that think and live so much like us we feel in community, but different enough we’re always learning so much. Making life work to homeschool our kids has been the biggest blessing and will continue to be a choice we are our regret.

It’s one thing to read Shakespeare; it’s quite another to live on his world, even for a few weeks. My daughter had the privilege of being in a local production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last weekend and I was blown away by the quality of the show. @bankstreetplayers @mostlymodernmarmee If you haven’t given local theatre a try you should, whether on stage or in the audience. There’s nothing like an immersive experience to get the whole family excited about the story. Forty of us from our homeschool group attended the show and it was so heartwarming to see my teenage guys and their friends engaged and hear them laughing at all the right parts, getting the jokes and little nuances. Of course it helped that they had read the play a couple of times already, but even those who hadn’t read it got something valuable and enjoyed the experience. It was such a great reminder that Shakespeare is still worth our time. Classics are classics for a reason. We can trust that when old things are lovingly passed down to us they must contain some value and be worth passing down to the next generation. One thing as a homeschool mom that is important to me, is that my children learn to effectively communicate with others through their writing. 📝 Over the last few years, we have incorporated an English curriculum into our school day. We’ve been using @bjupresshomeschool English, and I really appreciate all the different things that are taught during the year. My students have learned everything from sentence structure, when to capitalize, and proper punctuation, to drafting a business letter, writing a research paper, and how to create a Haiku. This weekend we had the wonderful opportunity of singing with @millennial_choir in the God Bless America concerts. It was such an amazing experience. We’ve been singing with MCO for years and it is such a gift every time to get to perform the powerful music. We can’t wait for the next season to start. Last week we discussed a dream deferred and what that means. We read the poem by Langston Hughes. We also have previously discussed how the great migration of Black slaves after they were freed and how that has affected current struggles/plights. Homeschool Update: As quickly as we dove into schooling exclusively with Charlotte Mason method we have dove back out again. Or rather we’ve gone back to the eclectic style of schooling that seems to work best for the children and myself. While we still use our living books throughout the week we’ve dropped certain things and picked up several programs. ⭐️IEW or Institutes for Excellence in Writing. ⭐️Fix-it Grammar ⭐️Math-U-See And we are still using @pridereadingprogram and will continue until we have gone through all the levels. Es stand nur fest, dass wir Richtung Südostasien reisen wollen, doch das genaue Ziel war lange unklar… wir wollten möglichst authentisch und in aller Ruhe, ohne viele Pläne ein Land erkunden. Uns Zeit nehmen und schauen was passiert. Die Wahl fiel schließlich auf Sri Lanka, denn dieses Land scheint so unglaublich viel zu bieten zu haben… und was soll ich sagen, außer JA GENAU SO IST ES AUCH 🌺 Die Menschen sind so familienfreundlich, sie lieben Kinder und scheinen im allgemeinen sehr glücklich zu sein. Das Essen ist so so gut und die Natur der Wahnsinn, facettenreich, so unterschiedlich - und wir haben noch nicht mal ansatzweise alles gesehen. Wir haben grade die Visa verlängert, können also insgesamt 3 Monate hier verbringen und sind gespannt, was wir noch alles erleben dürfen 🤍

Wishing life away ⤵ So many times I’ve said “I wish I could…” Until I finally realized, I can. I can have more time with my kids I can have more time with my husband I can have more time devoted to community service I can have a deeper relationship with God I can go on vacation whenever I want I can have a healthier body I can feel energized throughout the day I can homeschool my kids I can and I will. This is my one life. My one motherhood. My only days with my husband. Let's talk about tone. Children ask a lot of questions, right? About a lot of things? I know that I answer *many* questions throughout the day: What's for dinner? Where are we going? Can I have a snack? (That dinner one still causes me to crumble inside as my blood pressure rises. 🤦🏾♀️) But there are also questions like: What does that word mean? How do you spell...? What does that do? Well, I started to notice that even when my responses were calm and collected, sometimes I would answer with a negative tone. That means that attached to my answer was the expectation that they should know already (and really shouldn't have asked). Or, that their question was somehow unnecessary, so simple it was silly, or bothersome to me. Try saying "3 + 4 is 7" with no affect, then say it again with a "wow, you didn't know that" quality and possibly a lip snarl at the end. Different right? As an adult, I have learned so much from my experiences when they have involved generous people who have been willing to answer my questions, verify information, and explain something multiple times. Our children deserve the same, so our tone matters. How else might a young chef go on to become a master of his craft if not for people on his team who patiently demonstrate, willingly review, and honestly mentor and correct? Possibility is hidden inside of every loving exchange. ♥️
So proud of our two young men who are completing their homeschool year (although learning doesn’t stop in the summer). Both have exceeded expectations and are a testament that homeschooling works! Decided to do standardized testing to see where they are academically- CJ at 14 scored in the 99th percentile and could graduate high school (holding on that for his physical development) and Caden also scored 95-99th percentile and in all subjects scored 2-3 grade levels above his grade. Blessed to have a husband who has made the ultimate sacrifice to care and nurture our boys. Blessed to be the “manager” of their education and personal development. Homeschooling is a journey and one we evaluate regularly…Caden wants to try “regular” school and we likely will let him. Here’s a recap of week 15! Monday-my youngest… I’m not sure how ripped the towel holder out of our bathroom wall… my husband taught him how to patch up the drywall. Tuesday-my husband brought home morel mushrooms and naturally they were fried up right away! Wednesday-the tree fort is coming along!! Just have to finish the railing on the other side and it’s done! The boys were playing while dad was working on things outside. my daughter was at youth group but first before that there was an experiment fail… glass is not a good container to use.. it broke and bismuth went everywhere. Thursday-was our last day of our homeschool co-op… we had an end of year celebration… there was a science fair, readers theater, potluck with pizza, bouncy house… managed to get a photo with my oldest by her science project that was soo cool! I’ll have to blog about the process on the blog for anyone who wants to do it with their kiddos! That night was followed with taekwondo testing! My oldest got her brown belt… she’s getting closer to black! 🙌🏼 Friday- We attended a wedding and I only got one photo on my phone of my daughter but that’s it. She babysat the bride’s baby brother that day. Saturday-we were out on the soccer fields for 4 hours and were nicely sunburnt! Afterwards I went to Culver’s to squeeze in some schooling with my oldest. Sunday-we went to church and then went to my niece and nephews birthday party, got a picture of us getting back home along with one of all the cousins minus 1-together. Once upon a time, 2 kids met and fell in love. They started a life together and soon found themselves living a life that they knew they should be grateful for. Yet deep inside, they both harbored hidden desires for a different kind of life. There were fantasies and dreams that were brought up late at night and whenever they were alone... They had two kids. They bought a house. They settled into what was "comfortable." Until it wasn't. Until the deep desires didn't want to be buried anymore. Until the life we truly wanted called... and they decided to listen. ❤️❤️❤️ It is hard to believe that it's been only a year since we decided to sell our house, pack up our family of 4, move over 800 miles away, and build a new life. In that time, we bought a little over 15 acres with a creek and a small mountain. We moved into a 28-foot camper with our 2 boys and our dog. We began construction on a road, re-establishing and widening an old logging road that allowed us to move up onto the mountain. While the road is being built, we have been planning our geometric house that will include a circular first floor constructed with earthbags, a triangular A-frame entrance, and a rectangular second floor *hopefully* built from the trees we cut down to clear our build site. The entire house is going to be off-grid, and plans include rain collection, solar, an earthen floor, and a rocket mass heater. There will be gardens and goats, chickens and chores... we've learned to walk the Trail to Wellness, and it led us to the most fulfilling life we could imagine ❤️ We can't wait to share it all with you. . . P.S. We sure clean up nice! Amazing what a hot shower and some nice clothes will do. 🪺 Some of our favorite nest books require cake to go with it (because cake makes everything better.) 🪺 Nesting, by Henry Cole 🪺 A Nest is Noisy, by Diana Hutts Aston 🪺 Mama built a Little Nest, by Jennifer Ward One of our favorite simple single layer cakes to throw together is this Almond Flour Strawberry Cake from @foolproofliving. Top with whipped cream frosting or buttercream. We made a nest out of fresh thyme sprigs and added play Robins eggs (chocolate Robin eggs leftover from Easter would also work.) -In a large bowl, mix together: 2 cups almond flour (8.4 oz., 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon kosher salt -In a separate, small mixing bowl, whisk together: 3 large eggs at room temperature, ⅔ cup maple syrup or honey, ¼ cup olive or avocado oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. -Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredient mixture. My oldest loves to read, and if given the opportunity, would read a book with every meal. I often let her look at a book during lunch, and she chooses to reread a graphic novel, a Tuttle Twins book, or a shorter chapter book for beginning readers . She is currently reading the second book in The Prince Warrior series and says it's "way better than Percy Jackson." (She was on a BIG Percy Jackson kick for a few months.) I try to read the same series with her so we can talk about it together - cue family reading club ❤️. We've read all of the Keeper of the Lost Cities together, but she has passed my bookmark in The Invasion of the Unseen already 😂. What are your preteens currently reading? A nurse in the NICU told me to “lean in” and listen to it because that instinct would be the foundation of parenting.
