I'm teaching my first sketch class in a good while! And it's in person at The Lyric Hyperion! It's a 4-week class with a table read at the end! Who is this class for? This class is targeted for beginners and people with no previous sketch experience, but people of all sketch levels are invited and welcomed. And if you're a writer from another discipline – poetry, essay writing, playwriting, etc – I encourage you to attend. What will you get out of this class? You'll walk out of class with a few polished sketches and even a few pitches, and everything will culminate with a table read for family and friends. Who am I? We'll I've been doing sketch comedy for the past 8-9 years. I've been on three Pack Theater house sketch teams, was a TA for their level 1 sketch class, was the head writer and director of the Latinx Comedy Pachanga, formerly LA's biggest Latino sketch team, and featured in Second City's Diversity in Comedy Festival and Austin Sketch Fest. I've taught sketch workshops for Second City, Colorized Improv, and Crear Studio. My short film, The American Dream, has been featured in 43 film festivals, including The Philadelphia Latino Film Festival. Show 24 was Duo It Again 16! We created a new religion in just under 90 minutes in what may have been the craziest, most absurd yet grounded, most outrageous while being the most dense with cultural commentary Duo It Again ever. We deconstructed religion in a totally organic way with every scene being part of the loom that created this rich and sophisticated tapestry – all hail, Gizmo! I mean that wasn't the intention – it just happened. Certain themes pop up throughout the night, weaving into each other to create a once in a lifetime group mind that informs everything that happens on stage. By the end of the night we've created a sandcastle mythology – it's gone as soon as it's erected. And then the after party is always glorious. Not because I get a lot of attention (I mean, that's nice!) but because I get to see a bunch of new people become friends after sharing that unique moment together. This is one of LA's best shows! Natasha Mercado is a freaking Greek goddess because of her work ethic, passion, and commitment to her artistry! She is legendary, bordering on the mythical! She does so much!?!? And I do a lot! #1 Son is a lot of things – to say it's just a takedown of toxic masculinity would be reductive, but it certainly is that and more! – but what it is I have no doubt: funny, absurd, engaging, and vulnerable. It's a clown show that brings people in, with Natasha constantly checking in with the audience throughout, and looking for ways to get them involved. It has the feeling that Natasha is doing this show with the audience AND not doing the show at the audience, which is something I really appreciate, and what I really enjoy about her approach to clown. “You are one of the best impressionists I’ve ever heard!” – Howie Mandel, America’s Got Talent Go watch Andres Parada on America's Got Talent, and you'll see just how amazing he is with his impressions and how seamless he transitions from one voice to another. And he does it through this character called Papayaso, an ingenious framing device for all his celebrity impressions, which are just a gauntlet of name-the-game bits that keep the audience riveted, laughing, and glued to their seats. It's really quite advanced when you think about it because he's juggling two bits at once – Papayaso The Chilean Clown and his arsenal of celebrity impressions – but he's so funny and smooth that you're just laughing and waiting to see what he comes up with next. I've seen this act live too, like from 8 feet away, and it's amazing! Whether it's a black box in Hollywood or millions watching at home, Andres brings the full volume of his being to every performance. And it's really cool how he's broken down his methods and shared them with the world so they can aim for similar results. Here's what Dewey Morrison had to say about his experience in Andres' class: "Andres is a wonderful teacher and his methods gave me the confidence to start to try new impressions in my work. New Level Fun Improv class at The Glendale Room! This is a class for non-improvisers taught by a master improviser – Kimmy Gatewood! Kimmy is a badass, y'all. She was a series regular on GLOW, has directed a bunch of TV shows including, Single Drunk Female and Girls5Evs, and she's taught at UCB and the PIT in New York. This woman is amazing!
