Walking out of your presentation on time with every intention of getting to the airport to make your flight home, and discovering that your father‘s car, that you borrowed to go to and from Riverside from Long Beach, has a flat tire! Thank goodness for a local tire joint that was able to patch it up quickly. Day 7. Leaving Tokyo after Typhoon Faxai. First, I forgot something at my hotel in Osaka. Nothing super important, but the endeavor led to me picking it up from the conveniently located parcel company’s office- a 3-minute walk from my AirBnb! The pickup ticket instructed me to grab it at 8am so I got there at 7:55am! The sign on the door says something like “Due to the Typhoon, we will open at 9”. Oh no! So as I was pondering what to do with a flight at 10:30am across the city, one of the workers waves at me from inside and helps me handle my business! Oakwood Hotel in Osaka and Neko Parcel company I don’t actually know the name of, your respective staffs are great! Anyway, so after checking out at 8:15am I have to deal with the fact that major train lines are either cancelled or delayed, everyone is trying to get somewhere, and my flight (to my knowledge) has not been cancelled. I haphazardly navigate the subway line with a lot of help from anyone willing to help a useless English-only speaker, I queue in the craziest public transportation lineup I’ve ever seen (and everyone queues appropriately!) and somehow I get to the airport in one piece! Except that it’s 10:25am. And for some reason I can’t check-in at the automated kiosk. I get in this super long line and I watch on the display board as my flight number shows up! Except that all the words next to it are in Japanese! Oh wait, there’s some English- flight is delayed to 11:20am; may detour to Chitose. What?! Okay, so the helpful ANA staff gets me checked in and send me on my way. Getting through security and to my gate takes 10 minutes. I was in line for 30 minutes. It took me 5 minutes to figure out I couldn’t check in at a kiosk. It’s pretty much 11:10am as I get to my gate and boarding has started. There’s a slight delay getting off the ground as all of the planes have been delayed and the queue to take off is super long. No detour. And away we go! Bye, Tokyo! I owe you more time in the future. Does Street Taco & Beer Co. in Tucson, AZ have the BEST TACOS you’ll ever eat? Nope. But they have the BEST PEOPLE you’ll ever meet. I left my wallet in their restroom and did not discover it was missing until it was time to pack to fly home to LA. Turns out the woman who went into the bathroom after me, found it (full of credit cards and cash) and TURNED IT IN. And the worker she gave it to PUT IT IN A SECURE LOCATION but forgot to tell anyone and went home. I know all of this because the owner SPENT TWO HOURS reviewing the security footage, calling me with detailed updates and when, to her horror, she started to think the worker may have taken the wallet home because it was no longer there, the bartender said, “He would NEVER!” and dismantled the shelf under the counter, until it was found. All of this footage, the owner sent me so I could see it for myself.
