Those who know me would know how long I’ve been reading comics - so how could I not tune in to the Dead Boy Detectives by @neilhimself when it’s been made into a tv series by @netflix ! Though they only played small parts here and there with a miniseries or two in the comic world, the two teenage detectives ( aged up for more hijinks ) really come to life in this surprisingly fun series. Sandman with a lil less gravitas but twice the humour and hilarity. And you cannot help but fall in love with the characters. Abang Adik （富都青年）) is a Malaysian neo-noir drama film. The story is about the emotional journey between the two stateless brothers. It tells the story of a pair of undocumented orphans in Malaysia, Abang (Wu Kang-ren), a deaf mute person and his indignified younger brother Adik (Jack Tan) who struggle in a poverty-stricken and crime-ridden environment. A brutal accident upsets their relationship’s fragile balance. It reveals a lot of local social justice issues, e.g. Public servants’ attitudes, illegal foreign workers hiding from immigration operations, taking on odd jobs for a living... and so on. The movie started off really well that it gave me high expectations throughout, coupled with the quality cinematography and soundtracks. The character development between the two titular brothers is good. They are very well developed and engaging. Tiger Stripes เป็นหนังเล็ก ๆ จากประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน มาเลเซีย ที่ได้ฉายเปิดตัว ณ เทศกาลภาพยนตร์เมืองคานส์ สาย Critics’ Week เมื่อปี 2023 และล่าสุดได้ฉายโรงในบ้านเรา ณ เทศกาล Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival 2023 เมื่อปลายเดือนมีนาคมที่ผ่านมา แม้ว่าจะมีบริการผ่านระบบ streaming ของค่าย Netflix แล้ว หนังยาวเรื่องแรกของผู้กำกับหญิง Amanda Nell Eu ผู้ไปร่ำเรียนด้านการสร้างภาพยนตร์ที่ London Film School ชิ้นนี้ มีเนื้อหาที่ว่าถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงซึ่งโดยผิวเผินแล้วเหมือนจะเป็นสิ่งแสนจะธรรมดาสามัญของเด็กหญิงในวัยแรกสาว แต่สำหรับตัวละครหลักอย่าง Zaffan วัย 12 ปี ที่ดูจะโตไวกว่าเพื่อนนักเรียนหญิงร่วมชั้นในมาเลเซีย มันกลับเป็นเรื่องที่ชวนละเหี่ยและอึดอัดใจ โดยเฉพาะเมื่อเธอถึงวัยเริ่มมีประจำเดือน ที่คอยย้ำเตือนว่าโดยสรีระทางกายภาพแล้วเธอยังเป็น ‘สตรี’ ที่พร้อมจะเจริญพันธุ์ ตั้งครรภ์และให้กำเนิดบุตรธิดาต่อไป ไม่ว่าโดยบุคลิกลักษณะนิสัยแล้วเธอจะเกกมะเหรกเป็นทอมบอยถึงขนาดไหน ซึ่งก็นับเป็นภาวะที่ทำร้ายจิตใจดวงน้อย ๆ ของ Zaffan ที่ไม่อยากจะข้ามผ่านการเปลี่ยนแปลงอันน่ารังเกียจนี้ เพื่อที่จะได้เป็นผู้ใหญ่ในสังคมแห่งศาสนาอิสลาม ซึ่งเธอจะไม่มีความอิสระในการทำอะไรตามใจ และต้องอยู่ภายใต้อาณัติแห่งขนบธรรมเนียมแห่งศีลธรรมจรรยา จนไม่สามารถจะเป็นตัวของตัวเองได้เหมือนเดิม หนังได้สะท้อนการเริ่มต้นเปลี่ยนแปลงทางร่างกายของ Zaffan ไปพร้อม ๆ กับเหตุการณ์สัจนิยมมหัศจรรย์ที่รูปร่างและผิวพรรณของเธอเริ่มสำแดงอาการคันคะเยอหลังพบเจอว่าเธอกำลังจะกลายร่างเป็นนางเสือสมิงไปพร้อม ๆ กันด้วย! อาการป่วยไข้ไม่เป็นปกติทางกายของ Zaffan จึงมีการเทียบเคียงระหว่างการปรับเปลี่ยนรูปร่างขณะกำลังแตกเนื้อสาว กับการก้าวถอยหลังกลับไปเป็นสัตว์เดรัจฉานผู้ต่อต้านสังคมมนุษย์ ที่ Zaffan จะต้องเลือกว่าเธอจะหยุดพยศและปฏิบัติตามกฎระเบียบในกรอบสังคมต่อไปเพื่อให้เป็นที่ยอมรับ หรือเธอจะกลับไปใช้ชีวิตสันโดษในป่า สร้างความน่าเกรงขามด้วยสายตาและเขี้ยวเล็บที่พร้อมทำให้ทุกคนบาดเจ็บล้มตายด้วยสัญชาตญาณลายพาดกลอน เหมือนเหล่าดวงวิญญาณของสมรศรีผีสมิงตาวาวที่เธอเคยเห็นบนกิ่งไม้ตามราวป่ายามราตรีเยี่ยงสัตว์ที่ไม่มีระดู! อ่านต่อที่ Linkin.bio #PeriodRight #MalaysianFilm Content by kalapapruek Graphic by tonfernjiew #SPECTRUM #พื้นที่ความคิดของทุกสีสัน "กรุณาแสดงความเห็นอย่างสุภาพและสร้างสรรค์ ทีมงานสงวนสิทธิ์ในการลบหรือดำเนินการตามสมควร กับความเห็นที่สร้างความเกลียดชัง (hate speech) หรือละเมิดสิทธิของบุคคลอื่น”
