Maggie Jack joins UCLA's Center for Southeast Asian Studies and moderator Cindy Nguyen for a webinar on, "Media Ruins: Cambodian Postwar Media Reconstruction & The Geopolitics of Technology" April 18 @ 2 PM (PDT) https://tinyurl.com/2parzwr6 -- This talk describes the ways that Cambodian new media creators commemorate lost artists and an imagined better way of life through finding, repairing, and disseminating historical film, photography and cinema artifacts from before the Khmer Rouge period, often using digital tools. Reconstructing such media artifacts through a process of infrastructural restitution is a mode of healing from decades of national conflict and a form of subtle political action in an increasingly authoritarian Phnom Penh. Building on theory at the intersection of infrastructure studies (Star and Ruhleder, 1996; Larkin, 2013) and media’s relationship to memory (Gordon, 2008; Larkin, 2008; Richards, 1994), the concept of infrastructural restitution allows us to (re)integrate the importance of memory, the affective, and the spiritual into scholarship of infrastructure. This case gives new insight into the tension in transnational technology use between creative appropriation and the problematic political economy of mainstream platforms. The empirical sections of this talk are based on historical and ethnographic research in Phnom Penh from 2014-2020, including 20 months of full-time research from June 2017-January 2019. #Cambodia #AcademicWebinar #Khmer #Southeastasianculture #southeastasianfilm #khmerrouge #Cinema #FilmStudies #mediastudies #Southeastasiamedia #AsianCinema #Cambodiapolitics

Have been expecting this movie for some time A Malaysian drama about a pair of stateless, orphaned brothers who struggle for survival and identity This is the first time for me to watch Wu Kang-ren He plays a deaf-mute named Abang His compelling and convincing performance did captivate me And the most heart-wrenching scene is the brothers’ final ‘conversation’ in jail Unlike the previous scenes Adik, the younger brother, did not speak but communicated with Abang by using sign language Without words The pair of siblings had the very intimate, emotionally intense exchange Silence enveloped them Preparing them for the next phase of their lives #abangadik #jinong #malaysianfilm #southeastasianfilm #movienight #weekdayvibes

ArtsEquator Fellow, Dan Koh @damnkohl , is a Singaporean independent writer of creative non-fiction, spotlighting Southeast Asian culture and the arts, and histories and heritage. Dan was raised “in the industrial wasteland of Jurong” which he wrote about in his chapbook “Jurong, My Love” (2017, @the_substation ). During the Fellowship, Dan will be researching representation in recent Singapore and Malaysian independent cinema where he hopes to “foster a slightly deeper appreciation and understanding of Southeast Asian cinema, past and present”. Dan’s passion for Southeast Asian cinema runs deep. He’s currently looking forward to catching @lastshadowatfirstlightfilm by Nicole Midori (Singapore), and recommends that we explore the works by Indonesia’s @ignoranteye , @yuliaevinabhara , @angginoen ; @armicacanindin and @carlomanatad (Philippines); @quy_truongminh (Vietnam); and Thailand’s @tulapop_s and @sleepofreasonfilms. Following last month’s viewing of “Once a Moth”, last night I watched another classic Filipino film released on blu-ray by @kani.releasing: 1982’s “Cain and Abel” (original title: “Cain at Abel”). Thanks to @deadenddvd for selling this title! Written by Ricky Lee, and directed by Lino Brocka, the film’s story is an drama-action retelling of the eponymous biblical tale of Adam and Eve’s first two sons.⁣ ⁣ Lorens (Phillip Salvador) and his family live with his mother, Señora Pina (Mona Lisa, AKA Gloria Guinto), in the province and he manages her farm, despite her resenting him and blaming him for the death of his father. Meanwhile, Pina has allowed Ellis (Christopher de Leon), Lorens’ younger brother to study in Manila. Ellis comes back home, accompanied by his new girlfriend, Zita (Carmi Martin), and it’s not long before there’s tension between not just the brothers, but also between Pina and Zita. And to make things awkward, Ellis is the father of the baby of Zita (Cecille Castillo), Pina’s live-in housekeeper!⁣ ⁣ That would be enough drama for your typical teleserye/telenovela, but what adds fuel to this fire is something that’s existed in the Philippines as long as the biblical inspiration for this film; it has existed so long to this day that it’s now considered a meme by many: the family land dispute! Pina decides to give Ellis ownership of the farm for his inheritance, and this becomes the catalyst for turning this melodrama into an all-out war!⁣ ⁣ Despite having the ending spoiled for me via a comment on social media, I still enjoyed “Cain and Abel”. Good performances all-round, and the female characters were well-written; Lisa, Martin, and Castillo all delivered, as well as Baby Delgado, who played Lorens’ wife, Becky.⁣ ⁣ Speaking of delivering, Kani has once again come through with this release! Great packaging featuring beautiful cover/slipcase art by @studiotstella; 2021 interviews with Christopher de Leon and Carmi Martin; video and booklet essays by José B. Capino; and of course, the restored film. Kani is doing the work of the Filipino film gods! Looking forward to discovering more classics of Philippine cinema through their work!

In the latest issue of BiblioAsia, Senior Archivist Chew Tee Pao wrote about the meaningful legacy of restoring Money No Enough: “The restoration process allows audiences today to experience the films as they were first shown. But there are other benefits as well. Jack Neo told the Straits Times in 2018 that he was moved to tears while watching the restored version of Money No Enough. “Some of my good friends who were featured in the movie have since passed on,” he said. “But I also cried because it brought back so many memories. Just look at all those huge mobile phones that we used in the movie – I would call this a period film.” Read the essay here: https://biblioasia.nlb.gov.sg/vol-19/issue-2/jul-sep-2023/restoring-singaporean-films/ Catch the restored version of Money No Enough on the big screen this Wednesday, 16 August at 8pm: https://asianfilmarchive.org/event-calendar/money-no-enough-1998/ #ExploreAsianCinema (link in bio under Off the Catalogue: August 2023) . . . . . . . #ExploreAsianCinema #AsianCinema #Film #Director #Directors #worldcinema #Cinema #Filmmaker #archive #arthousecinema #asia #cinema #theatre #indiecinema #supportlocal #supportlocalsg #Filmmakers #auteur #singapore #singaporecinema #singaporefilms #indiefilm #southeastasiancinema #southeastasianfilm

“I was living and working as a filmmaker in Yangon in 2012 when the news of the Rohingya conflict started to come out. On that visit, I met two extraordinary women, a Buddhist midwife and her young Muslim apprentice. I made “Midwives” in order to represent myself and my country’s story,” says Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing @snow_hninei about her feature Documentary debut, Midwives which won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Prize in 2022. “In Stanley Xu’s A Day, That Year, a boy quarrels with his mother on a shopping trip; in Benjamin Ang’s Treasure, a young woman confronts her father whom she has not seen for twenty years… In both scenarios, something appears incomplete and amiss—a metaphor partly sketched, wanting for elaboration.” Film critic Morris Yang @morrisycy uses imagery from Mulholland Drive to write about the way these two short films part of #SGShorts23 use memory in their stories. Soe Hok Gie was an Indonesian political activist and writer, notable for his involvement in the student protests of the 1960s against the dictatorial regime of President Sukarno. Following his accidental death in 1969, Gie became an icon to the younger generation of dissidents opposing Suharto and his New Order. His posthumously published diary, Catatan Seorang Demonstran (The Demonstrator’s Diary), was the inspiration for this biographical film by Riri Riza, who himself lived through the devastating student riots of May 1998, which resulted in Suharto’s resignation.
