Had an urge to open this 13yo @jurawhisky from @wmcadenheads which I picked up from their Edinburgh shop last year. This is the first whisky I've had which is finished in Manzanilla sherry casks and it really offers something different. This is quite savoury and salty to start with, almost like Ritz crackers before a strawberries and cream boiled sweets favour emerges. A touch of water opens up some pine nuts, jam and coconut cake, vanilla and white grapes. Behold, the Glasgow Distillery Co.'s quite wonderful 1770 Peated! Whisky Scoop - This expression is made specifically using heather-rich peat from the highlands. After distillation, the whisky is matured in first-fill ex-sherry casks and allowed a finishing period in virgin oak casks. As you can imagine, it's a busy dram with plenty of flavours competing for some attention. Personally, I got zesty lemon with wafts of floral smoke on the nose which turned to a lingering strong peat and rich dried fruit sweetness on the palate. Yum! I also found the bottle great to shoot. Plenty of glass real estate to show off the terrific deep peaty red that just oozes flavour! Why must Barley undergo the process of malting (controlled germination) before it can be fermented? Yeast creates alcohol by consuming and metabolizing sugar. While the sugar in grapes is a simple, accessible sugar, the sugar in grains is trapped in the form of dense starches. Yeast can't do anything with that. The third limited annual release in The Harmony Collection series, The Macallan took inspiration from natural Scottish grasslands to create a malt whisky that would be reminiscent of warm meadows and mature barley fields, with a rich, citrus-scented finish. It was created using a mixture of sherry-seasoned oak and bourbon casks. Instead I'm enjoying a blended malt Scotch whisky from @compassboxwhiskyco that was aged in ex-sherry casks. The Story Of The Spaniard is a batch from 2022 bottled at 43%. This is a nice, fruity malt that's not a sherry bomb. Wheat Malt is the second most common malted grain used in brewing, after barley malt. 🌾 When used in beer, wheat malt imparts a lighter body than does barley malt, often coupled with a gently refreshing touch of acidity. 🍻 Wheat malt can be added at 5% to most Light Beers to increase foam stability without affecting haze or flavour. Vorig jaar kreeg ik tot mijn verbazing de kans om voor mij de 2 oudste whisky’s die ik tot nu toe gedronken heb te proeven. Namelijk een 42 en een 44 jarige. Ze zijn van beide van “House of Hazelwood”. Al bijna honderd jaar leggen generaties van de familie Gordon zorgvuldig voorraden whisky aan voor speciale gelegenheden en persoonlijke consumptie. Deze zeldzame collectie is bekend geworden als House of Hazelwood, naar het huis van de familie Dufftown - Hazelwood House. Voor het eerst wordt deze eens zo particuliere collectie aangeboden aan mensen buiten de directe familie in kleine batches die met de hand zijn geselecteerd voor release. Uit de The Charles Gordon Collection heb ik de “ The Old Confectioner's' mogen proeven. Dit is een 44 jaar oude blended malt scotch whisky die tientallen jaren heeft gerijpt in een refill Oloroso Sherry butt. De single malt componenten van deze blend worden niet bekendgemaakt . De neus heeft de zoete tonen van zoethout, karamel en gekonfijt fruit (denk aan pruimen frambozen aardbeien). De afdronk is droog en lang met weer veel gedroogd fruit en een aangename smaak van eikenhout . 'The Old Confectioner's' werd gebotteld op 46,4% ABV en is beperkt tot 256 flessen wereldwijd. Uit de Legacy Collection heb ik de “ A Trail Of Smoke” mogen proeven. Dit is een 42 jarige Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Dit is een blend van geturfde single malts. Ook hier worden de distilleerderijen niet vermeld . De verwijzing naar "de opmerkelijke eilanden waar het vandaan komt" suggereert dat de herkomst hoogstwaarschijnlijk de westelijke eilanden Islay en de Hebriden van de Schotse kust is. De neus ruikt zo als te verwachten is naar turf (maar dan mooi op de achtergrond en niet zo als de bekende islay peat bommen) . Verder veel zoete tonen, zeewier. De smaak en afdronk zijn lekker lang en zoet van het tropishe fruit, zoutig en de rook is altijd op de achtergrond aanwezig maar word nooit overheersend. Deze werd whisky werd op 46.5% gebotteld en is beperkt tot 385 flessen wereldwijd. Wat is dit gaaf om een keer zulke oude en complexen whisky’s te mogen proeven bedankt team House of Hazelwood voor deze mogelijkheid!
