Let's travel back in time, at the beginning of Mingary Castle's story.. It is likely that it was built by the MacDougalls of Lorne between 1265 and 1290 to control the northern entry to the Sound of Mull. The first written record dates from the reign of James IV, when the king occupied it in 1493 following his destruction of the MacDonalds' power as Lords of the Isles. Through the years the Castle met many owners (MacIains, MacDonalds, Campbells). In 2013, being in a dangerous condition, was saved by the Mingary Castle Preservation & Restoration Trust. The refurbished building finally opened in 2016. Ardnamurchan AD Cask Strength (58.1% ABV) Really impressed with my first few sips of this cask strength bottling from 2023 so I figured I’d jot down a few notes. They make use of a mix of peated and unpeated whisky from bourbon, Oloroso and PX barrels/hogsheads/butts resulting in a pleasant sweet and coastal peated whisky at a healthy ABV to deliver the full flavor. ARDNAMURCHAN - CASK STRENGTH The AD/05.23 was bottled for the Canadian market, but some bottles were available at the distillery when I visited last year. I’ve always found the spicy, peated spirit of @ardnamurchandistillery works best at higher strengths and it’s no different here. This is such a wonderful mix of coastal, smokey and vegetal flavours, with just enough sweetness to keep things in check. Another winner from the west coast.
