"Speculative Futures" is an installation composed by twelve solar robots that make a performance moving their heads with smooth movements to worship the sun. Created by @joaquinfargas as part of the Mars College residency and produced in Bombay Beach, the work is a site-specific robotic installation based on the previous work “Robotika” developed in 2019. At sunrise and sunset the robots start to move, to rise their heads and seemingly dance. The artist writes: “Will we be able to assure the survival of our own species? Or we will need to trust that task to AI? Will it be possible to train robots to take care of our embryos and bring them safely to some inhabitable planet where our civilization can develop again? An intergalactic arc was built to guarantee the species survival. A million years later, a Transhuman AI found an array of half buried nanny bots. Gifted with solar panels, their heads move while the rising sun begins to energize their sensors and they start to move their heads with smooth movements to worship “that sun”. Peaceful, protectors of a legacy that they must preserve and assist in a planet that is no longer their own, because their creators -former humans- never understood how to live in harmony and protect the Earth in order to preserve themselves as a species. The current environmental problems and the lack of action by the main actors lead us to think of other possibilities when we can no longer inhabit our planet. We are currently working on an associated Sci-Fi text, based on the narrative developments of Chat GTP A.I., and the Fargas team.”

Closeups of interesting photosynthetic features found in my bio-art project for Mars College 2022. @mars.college Using sediment from the Salton Sea (in Southeastern CA), I used a Winogradksy Column method to cultivate the Cyanobacteria, Purple Bacteria, and Green Sulfur Bacteria which thrive in its sulfate-rich waters and sediments. The project worked extremely well and every two days the columns looked completely different. There were several intriguing features that I observed and would like to investigate -- completely vertical striations, filaments reaching into areas of salt crystals, regions where the Purples & Cyanos coexist. I will dig further into this project for Mars College 2023, producing time-lapse videos of their growth and collecting rudimentary data, as well as other elaborations of the method, aiming toward the ultimate goal of "painting with them". I'd also love to eventually get these onto plates for pure culture, and ultimately get them sequenced to identify the species. The sunlight is nearly always full-blast in the Salton Sea, so these phototrophs must have robust photoprotection mechanisms; in fact the protein I have studied with Cheryl Kerfeld at LBNL, the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP), was first discovered from the Salton Sea!!! The columns were grown outside my trailer for two months, near Bombay Beach, always with the same side facing the sun. The pieces were ultimately displayed at the 2022 Bombay Beach Biennale, and accompanied my lecture there on the Biogeochemical History of the SS.
Photosynthetic Bacteria bio-art project for Mars College 2022, using sediment from the Salton Sea, showing stratified layers of Cyanobacteria, Purple Bacteria, and (possibly) Green Sulfur Bacteria. The colors were so rich. The right column developed the purple bacteria earlier on, before the cyanobacteria and green sulfur bacteria began to dominate. The left column had formed a whitish-ochre patch in the beginning, on the sun-facing side of the column, before eventually turning darker green (once the weather became warmer). Caro also tried layering the sediment pieces (which are white on top (from photobleached cyanobacteria) and black underneath (from sulfate reducing bacteria), with all sorts of ochre and olive and yellow mixed in (presumably different species of cyanobacteria). The sunlight is nearly always full-blast in the Salton Sea, and temperatures surpass 100F in the summers, so these surface phototrophs must have strong photoprotection mechanisms; in fact the protein I have been studying in my research career, the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) was first discovered using material collected from the Salton Sea!!! (I hadn't known this yet at the time of collection; cool story whoah!) I had us crack an egg into the bottom of two of the columns, because that's what you traditionally do to create a sulfur gradient so the Purple Sulfur Bacteria can find the right level and grow; however it turned out to be unnecessary (and, in fact, a nuisance) because the Salton Sea already has a high sulfate content (causing peculiar odors on windy days, when the lake strata mix and release gases made by deep-lake Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRBs convert sulfate to H2S and S0)). We set the columns outside in the sun, to allow the phototrophs to grow, keeping the same side facing the sunlight. Each one grew differently! The pieces were eventually turned into candleholders and displayed at the Bombay Beach Biennale, at the Electric Lounge. Thanks Jono Melamed (@le.yone) for documenting us on collection day!
